Need help choosing 8 lb or 10 lb line for jerkbait fishing from shore

Featured Replies

I’m a shore angler fishing a lake that’s mostly 4–8 feet deep, and I’ll be throwing mainly 1/2 oz jerkbaits. In the spring the water stays pretty open, but by mid‑summer the cover can range anywhere from light to fairly heavy depending on the spot. I’m planning to pick up a couple of Bass Pro Shops XPS Staredown Suspending Jerkbaits during the Spring Classic.

For this setup, I’ll be using a 7' Medium/Fast St. Croix Mojo Bass spinning rod. Given the conditions and lure weight, would 8 lb or 10 lb line make more sense? I’m trying to balance casting distance with enough strength to handle the changing cover throughout the season. Also curious what line you’d recommend — I’m considering Seaguar InvizX fluorocarbon, but I also have Yo‑Zuri in 6/8/10 lb on hand.

EDIT: want to do straight fluorocarbon without braid, Just something different

What you can use will depend on your reel. I have trouble with any fluorocarbon above 8# on my Shimano 2500 and 3000 Stradics.

The reel is the Pflueger Patriarch Spinning Reel 2500. (Yeah, I got those on super cheap sale from cabelas back in the old days).

I always go as light as possible. Until a fish breaks me off to prove otherwise, lure presentation is king.

That's what I have been doing (braid/leader) - just want to try something different by going straight fluorocarbon this year.

Me too. 8lb is as heavy as I have on any of my spinning reels.

Daiwa j fluoro samurai has been really good to me in lighter test lb, I run a lot of invizx but didn't like it in 6lb for bfs.

I did the same thing. I got tired of the braid to leader mainly because of the rainbow in the line with lighter baits. I tried 10# and 8# on some setups and decided to go with 8# because I can use it on spinning as well as bait casting reels. I bought a 1000 yard spool so I am committed.

I use 10 lb in the spring and in the fall. I go down to 8 lb in the summer when the bass get picky.

It's not fluoro, but... Sunline Super Natural mono in 10 pound is a fave of mine, no memory, fishes a jerk bait really well, casts a mile.

I prefer 2500 sized spinning reels for most Bass applications where I use a spinning rod, most fluoro is awful on all spinning reels, you can get a lot of life out of a spool of super natural and it's great on spinning reels, even 2500 sized ones.

I don't like to go under or too much above .010" in diameter for jerkbaits on spinning gear, I would pay more attention to that than advertised pound test rating.

8#

I use 8 pound Invisix on a couple of my spinning reels. It works very well, but I have to take the twist out of it after every trip. I also use KVD line conditioner after I untwist the line after a trip. Like others, 8# fluoro is the heaviest line I'll use on a spinning rig.

@Glenn has a video around here somewhere about maintaining and untwisting line.
