Finesse skirt jig question

Featured Replies

When fishing a finesse jig, do you trim the skirt like you would a regular jig? I haven’t fished finesse jigs and am going to fish them the next time I go fishing which will hopefully be next week. Thanks for your response.

I fish a lot of Sieberts "Mini Jigs" with the "finesse" cut and absolutely love them.

All of my Snipers and Mini Jigs from him are the "finesse" cut... No longer use anything other than the "finesse" cut in any jigs with 3/0 or smaller hooks.

I make mine like the Jewel finessePee Wee jigs. They are fish catchers.

Dam! They don’t call you Jig Man for nothing! That’s a sweet looking jig … man!

I may have to pirate that one … with your permission of course

I really like the trimmed skirts. Here is my Sniper. One of my favorites. I fish mine cut exactly like this.

Beauty Mike! If I could fish lead here in my state I’d order at least 30 - 40 of them

Thank you. I can make my Tungsten Arky that way too. It would work pretty much exactly the same.

30 - 40 tungsten vs lead is a big difference in $$. What are trying to do? Send me to divorce court … haha

I may have to call you my friend

That pic is actually a Jewell Pee Wee called Bass Whacker. I do make a knockoff which is very similar. The top row is mine while the bottom row is Jewell’s, bass whacker and Hail Mary. I make 3/16, 5/16, and 7/16. They are good smallmouth baits.

So I take it that you don’t trim the skirts because finesse jigs are smaller and because they’re smaller skirts, you don’t need to be trimmed? Am I correct? 🥴

To be fair, when I think fitness jigs I think of a thinner skirt and trimmed to about a 1/4” passed the hook. I like the skirt to be layered so the material that bends over the collar will get cut to about the length of the hook or a little less.

My jigs are made with 6” skirt tabs so they get severely trimmed. I like to pair them with 4” twin tail grubs, either Yamoto or homemade.

There really isn’t much of a skirt as the hook is a 2/0 little nasty.

I trim all my jigs about 1/4-1/2" below the hook. Enough to where the skirt doesn't interfere or cover up my trailer. Depending on the jig, sometimes I'll thin-out the skirt as well. I do the same with bladed jigs.

For Finesse jigs, another recommendation for Sieberts "Sniper" jig. Also, highly recommend

HH Customs for mini jigs and mini bladed jigs.

I trim the skirt on a finesse jig so the strands are past the hook maybe 1/4 inch or so. The fuller the skirt, the closer to the hook I trim the material. I have fished a couple of jigs the the short skirt strands around the jig head, but I have never noticed any difference in the bite.

I let the trailer dictate how much I trim the skirt. I fish a much smaller more compact trailer on my finesse jigs. So I trim them to keep the skirt from interfering with the trailer action. Some of mine are compact full jigs. Some are thin less strand finesse cut. Just play with them and see what works best for you. I will say this. I catch way more fish and my PB on finesse cut jigs

Finesse cut skirt material is what I use. Regular skirt material flares too much when cut short. I will take some pictures later and post what they look like.
