terrova trolling motor with remote - kayak

Featured Replies

for those of you that have a trolling motor with a remote on their kayak. (not sure if fishing vessel matters)

does anyone know the distance that the remote can be away from the trolling motor before it loses signal?

I was thinking, ya there is an emergency shut off if you were to fall over board. but, what if you fall over, trolling motor is still running and you want to retrieve it using your remote control. while you're in the water, it would be nice to drive it back to your location. Does anyone know that max distance? anyone ever had to do this?

I have a Minn Kota Terrova (36" kayak model)

I was at Anglers choice for their open house a few weeks back and I just bought a new Minn Kota motor. The guy working the table said he's worked for them for 20 years and before he got promoted to rep he built motors for them. I asked him what the best model(not the most expensive) Minn Kota made was and he told me for the money the Terrova is the best you can get. The design and electronics are alot higher quality than the price suggests.

I had the autopilot kayak which is a power drive based motor and I had the big remote with it. It was at least 50 yards of range. Could have been more.

But for the scenario you’re talking about it shouldn’t work. You should have a kill switch clipped to you so that if you fall over the boat isn’t going anywhere. On the autopilot it was built in next to the seat. Not sure on other motors.

I have the option to install that kill switch if I want (it came with the motor)

Just do it. I had a long enough cord on mine that I just clipped it around my ankle and never knew it was there. I stood to fish and that was the most convenient place for it.

Kill switch around the ankle is a good idea, I can't say I always clipped mine on but should have. The new Garmin stern drive motor has a Man Over Board feature which would be nice. I wish my Power Pole Move motor had MOB on my kayak. That thing is so powerful you could get left in the dust (wake) very easily if you're not careful and tethered.

I have had my Terrova Kayak motor in the box now for about 12 months. I purchased it with the intention of installing it on my PA14. But I purchased a Sun Dolphin Pro 120. Right now she's in the backyard under shrink wrap. I am very anxious to unbox the Terrova and install it on my Pro 120.

Just ordered the Kayak Terrova for my canoe. On the fence about installing the lanyard kill switch as wearing the remote on my pfd, if I go in it’s the first thing I’d reach for.

@Motoboss - that's where I am with mine as well. I've had it up and running a hand full of times last year, but do not have the auto kill switch installed. remote on a lanyard around my neck

Yeah I would hook up the lanyard but on a canoe it’s difficult because there’s no place to mount it other than the top of the seat deck. On my Sportspal the seat is a three inch foam siting on an aluminum c channel type arrangement.

If I can work it out I will hook it up for sure and suggest you do as well if doable.

On water safety is a priority, especially if fishing alone.

Kill switch around the ankle is good. I’ll try it. Right now I have a long lanyard permanently tied to my pfd. I can stand
