Pulling line using drag cause line twist?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Often when I need some more line out of my reel (spinning reel), I loosen the drag a bit and pull some line out.  Please note I don't loosen the drag much, just enough so I can pull line out.

Does this cause line twist?  Does the looseness of the drag effect if there is line twist?

thanks

Larry

I haven't been fishing spinning gear for bass for very long, so here I go out on a limb!

I usually get the limb cut off behind me but what the heck ;). I figured out how some baits caused line twist but didn't know about pulling against the drag until I read it here. IMHO I would imagine pulling against the drag on any setting would cause the same thing. I treat it as such anyway and always open the bail...

Only when reeling with the drag in operation.

Want to reduce line twist?  Possibly eliminate it forever?  Do not close your bail with the crank handle.  What I mean is manually close your bail with your hand, and make sure that the line is seated on the roller before you begin your retrieve.

Closing the bail with the crank handle puts a loop in your line.  Do it a few times, tangled mess of line!

pulling the line out from the spool after loosening the drag does not cause line twist.

manually closing the bail will reduce but not eliminate line twist.

Adding a swivel will reduce but not eliminate line twist.

It's a fact of life with spinning gear.

Very limp braided line on a good reel will not twist.

If braid is not an option then at the first hint of line twist, cut off the lure, and open the bail.

run the boat letting the line pay out behind you, the line will untwist and be good to go untill the next time you see the loops start to form.

If not fishing from a boat, use the wind or current to accomplish the same thing.

good luck and have fun.

Yep!

Regardless of how "perfectly" you spool your line, trolling it the first time out will COMPLETELY eliminate all twist. This is a good habit to get into and starts every day fresh.

Avid, all but this line were right on.

Actually braid will twist just as much (and maybe more since it's softer and won't resist the twist) but the soft nature of the line will usually keep it from jumping off the spool or winding itself.  Same problem, just a dramatically reduced "symptom."

Apologize for not giving correct info :-[. Learned something new today, which in my case is almost everyday (chronicly bewildered :-/)!

After reading about line twist here, I try everything to cut down on it. It seems worse when I fish flukes than anything, worse even than when I use #3 Mepps...

Tie on a swivel a couple of feet ahead of the bait.

whenever I spool on new line on a spinning reel, I also let out all the line as well to eliminate twist.

1. when these guys are talking about trolling the line out behind the boat, make sure there is no lure attached!  Just the line.

2.  Worst "twist" scenario is when you have a fish on and your drag is too loose and you keep reeling anyway.

3. 2nd worst scenario, using a fluke on anything above 10 lb test, lol  (the story of my week, lol)

When you guys spool your spinning reels, are you lying the spool of line flat on the floor?  I learned a trick a long time ago-  Lie the spool on the floor so that the line comes off counter clockwise.  Keep the reel on the rod and thread the line through the guides and tie to reel spool.  Normally for me, the line goes all the way onto the spool without beginning to twist.  If it does begin to twist, you flip the spool on the floor over.

If you fill your spool of your spinning reel with the line spool coming off overhead like a baitcaster, of course it will twist!   ;)

Laurasdad,

Loosening your drag and pulling line off the spool will never cause any line-twist.

In fact, pulling line off the spool without loosening the drag will not cause line twist.

But as LBH stated in number 2, cranking the reel when no line is being retrieved will most definitely cause line-twist.

The bail is designed to wrap the line around the spool, just as you'd wrap a garden hose around the hose hanger.

But if no line is being retrieved, then each rotation of the bail throws another twist in the line.

I use braided line on my spinning tackle, and have all but forgotten about line-twistdontknow.gif (wutzat)
