Just bought an Avid 6'8" med. xf, what's the best reel for under$125

Featured Replies

I bought an Avid moslty going to use for tubes, and jigs.

I'm trying to figure out the best reel for the money to throw on it.

I own a couple of pfeugers, but they don't feel right on this rod. Any help would be great.

my mistake, spinning

Welcome to the forum!

My choices would be either a Daiwa Tierra 2500 ($115) or a Shimano Symetre 2500 ($80). I have both and have no complaints with either, both are very nice reels.

There isn't a best just a favorite. I like Shimano's, but also own several Pfleugers and a Quantum. My favorite reel is the Symtre 4000fi. I use these for Bass and Inshore Saltwater. Most guys on here will say that 2500 is big enough. I need the exrta line capacity. Another reel that I would like to try is the Abu Garcia 800 series. Some of the guys here have Daiwa's, espcially the Tierra. Any way the Symtre sell for around $79. Hope this helps.

For a couple of extra bucks, the new Shimano Stradic 2500 would be awesome.  I had an old Stradic on this same rod last year and I liked it alot.  But with the new Stradic, it seems like a perfect match.

There was a thread about people having problems with the NEW Stardic. Buy an old Stardic (white) wich is "field tested" and known to be a solid reel. I've seen a couple at Dick's in clearance for $99.

If no, go with Symetre. Let Shimano sort out the problems with the new model first.

I've heard good things about Daiwa Tierra , Pfluger Supreme , ABU Cardinal 800 series.

Hope it helps...

I say the Symetre, too. I have two and love them.

Symetre. It's the only spinning reel I own at the moment. I got rid of the others and replaced them with Daiwa baitcasters.

You won't go wrong with either the Tierra or the old (white) Stradic.  I have both, and both are great reels.

I guess I'll jump in with something other than a Shimano recommendation.

Pflueger Supreme MG....very light with a silk-like drag. Under $100 bucks.

I have that same rod and use a Shimano Symetre 2500.  Great pairing for the dollars :)

I shall be accused of treason by my fellow Abu Posse Members but.....Symetre

Darn!  Beat me to it.  I am a big fan of the symmetre and the stradic as I have, oh, just a few of each.  But, I also have a small collection of Pfluegers, and I really think you'd like the feel and balance on that rod matched up with a Supreme.  A symmetre 2500 would be a good choice also... but the Supreme just feels perfect to me on that rod.

I have always been a Shimano man but was talked into buyin a Daiwa Tierra 3000. I have to admit that it is my favorite spinning reel. I like the bigger spool on the 3000 it helps with"line Twists" the base is the same size as the 2500. The Daiwa Exceler 3000 is also a great reel and it sells for $70.

I just bought an avid, and paired it with a pflueger supreme, super light setup, and the reel is $100.

I think the best reel for the money is the pfeluger supreme $99.00

i love mine it's much smoother than my sustain & my quantum energy , i love it so much i got rid of all my other reels and replaced them w/ this reel . PS before i bought it i looked at the new stradic ,saros and the diawa tierra and went with the supreme a lot more for the money . Its magnesium and has 10 bearings and has a really nice drag system. here is a link i found the gives som insight GOOD LUCK http://www.setthehook.com/reels/plueger/supreme.html
