Just bought a quantum tour edition pt, and every time i cast it, it makes this awful noise. Has anyone else had this same problem? If so how can i fix it?

Return the reel for exchange or refund.

I think what he means is Return for Daiwa or Shimano.....

I'd do one of two things (since I am a Quantum fan, yeah I admit it!   ), either take it back to the store to exchange it for another or send it to ReelMech to have it properly lubed.

Why does it make noise?

Because its a Quantum....I am not brand loyal to one specific company, but I owned two quantums that both made noises that I couldnt explain.

Didnt affect the performance, per se, but it did lower my confidence that I was using a quality reel.

I wasn't bashing Quantum, I wouldn't put up with a problem with a new reel regardless of the brand.

From my experiences, they are not going to be perfectly quiet reels because of the nature of their braking systems.  Give the below reel review a read.  They talk about the casting noise of the Tour PT.  If you are experiencing something different than what they are describing, you may want to get a refund or exchange it for another.

"Infinite ACS is adjusted via an ergonomic knob on the sideplate. The knob can be turned up and down quickly, and our tests confirmed that only does the system work, but it is possible to make extremely precise adjustments to the cast control system, much more so than traditional weighted cast control systems. If you ever watch KVD during any recent tourneys, you can hear that his Tour reels are not exactly the quietest out there.

quantums do make a bit of noise when casting- its a smooth even pitch though anything else and I'd say you have problems.  I did have a curado do that to me earlier this spring and I pulled it apart and cleaned all the old lube out put fresh lube on the spool bearings not much tho and presto all better- I think I got a bit carried away with the bearing lube over the winter.

ill tell ya what ,, i baught a couple energy pts back in the day ... the black ones ptxm /// bolth made bad noise on the cast .... i found out that there werent properly lubed when they came from the factory ,,, get a tube of hot sause ,,, lube that sucka up .... the noise should stop ... now days every reel i buy ,,, i lube before i make the first cast ...

I agree, I wouldn't put up with a problem either. The ONLY thing that I don't like about the Quantums is that dang Hot Sauce, which is why I mentioned ReelMech. He's got the GOOD STUFF!  8-)

I think the original poster was referring to a loud, screeching squeal, not the normal whirr that these reels and many others make.  

Loosen the adjustment cap until it no longer contacts the spool and see if the noise stops-I expect it will.  If it stops, then the problem may be that you had it too tight (the adjustment is very sensitive) or needs lube.  Comments from one of our reel experts indicates that hot sauce is not all it's cracked up to be and the Quantum needs more lube more often than many reels.

I cobbled a small spring washer into the cap adjustment to soften the application of force from the disc to the spool and think it helped with the adjustment sensitivity.

When my PT's are adjusted properly and lubed they make no unusual noise and cast great.

If the noise isn't the casting noise the TT review talked about (a low tone hum like sound) and is a very high pitched squeal, then it is probably the Quantum® proprietary Poly Stainless Ball Bearings (PT bearings). They are a poly coated and need lubrication more often than stock Stainless, plus the ceramic shims behind each spool support bearing could be dry and need a drop of oil..

I know that my Tour Edition did the same and I changed lines and it stopeed.

I was using 12lb P-Line Fluro, now I use 12lb Yo-Zuri Hybird Smoke/Purple and it seemed to stop.

Could be lubrication as well.
