fat ika?

Featured Replies

up-side down or right-side up,  t-rigged weightless, and fish it slow like a senko. I pretty much did this same thread like 4/5 months ago, and that is what I learned. It is a pretty good lure, but I don't like it this time of the year. The senko and Ika have not been producing for me lately.

For the last three of years, the Fat Ika has been my #1 producer.

Rig the bait skirt up (forward) on a 4/0 Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hook, weedless and weightless. Cast the lure into or parallel to cover and/or structuce and let it settle on semi-slack line. Let it set for a minute and then move the Fat Ika 6"-12" with a short, horizontal sweep. After letting the bait sit for at least 15 seconds, move it again. Work the bait until you feel you are "out of the zone."

He is the one that made me go out and buy Fat Ikas and wrote a nice description on how to fish em. And now because of him It really produces for me  ;)

Lets see if it's the same for you.

ya i was just curious about them since ive been hearing great stories of them and what not  (not really jk) but they did grasp my attention so i might give them a try thanks

Ikas are not a very popular bait (at least not in my neck of the woods). Don't ask me why? But I guess that's a good thing! They give you an edge with presenting something to the bass that they are not use to seeing every day. Beyond that, don't forget to try them in rivers for smallies; with a little current, you can cast them along a shelf, bridge pier or log jam, letting the bait fall and drift close in, paralleling the structure.  You'll nail some of the biggest SM in the water  ;).

This is one of the few GYCB baits I haven't tried yet.  You've sold me.  I'm gonna give it a try.

I'll let you guys know how I do.  Thanks for describing how to use it Roadwarrior.  I wouldn't have thought to rig it 'backwards'

Lately I've been killin 'em with the Flappin Hog on a c-rig and a t-rig.

Fishing with the Fat Ikas is the easy part.

Finding them can be a challenge so be ready to order them on-line from some of our forum sponsors.

I will be trying them this spring and summer, too.  Just too many good reviews by Road Warrior to pass them up.

I found some of the Kinami Baits Palm Tree baits ( also made by GYCB ) which I understand to be the same thing.  They had these at BPS.

I'm gonna try them on Thursday.

Yeah, the Fat Ikas work great. I rig them upside down (skirt facing up) and I fish it just like you would a senko, also I'll use it in the same occasion as I would throw a senko. They work pretty good. I tend to fish them in more open areas, or small bits of cover (small stick piles, small patch of lillypads, they work great in rocky areas), larger cover I tend to throw a jig or flip a pegged creature softbait. Also, Black/blue flk, and Greenpumpkin are the colors that work best for me with the Fat Ika.

I'm not sure "scent" makes a difference, but I use MegaStrike for lubrication.

i live in nj i havnt seen anyone yet use this lure i fish a local resivior and nj most pop lakes.Fat ika r my go to bait when fish dont him anything else, also smallmouth love them.i even caught a hybrid striper as well ;D

The 3" Ika is also smaller around..

so it would be easier to rig w/ the 1/0 hook,

looks as if he rigs it like a wacky style, but on the end of the bait.

the Fat one needs a much bigger hook..

4/0 seems good.

they do work great..

a slow stop & go retreive across the bottom

kills um...

I have one rod rigged with a fat ika all the time.  i have caught a lot of fish with them, and they are extremely easy to fish.

The Fat Ika is my also my top producer and it is flat out fun to fish.

I rig it backwards with a Gamakatsu 5/0 G-Lock worm hook.  My favorite color is Black with blue flake.

I have had days with this bait when..

having the skirt at one end works much better than with

it at the other end, some times backward ,some times front ward.. even with the same bait ( same color )..

it pays to try all types of rigging,,
