Question about the new Core Mg50

Recommended Posts

Any reason Shimano put a $369 msrp on it? I mean, I know magnesium costs a little more than aluminum. But is there something else about it? From the pictures I've seen, it looks extraordinarily ordinary. Just wondering why this isn't priced, say, $100 less.

That only $20 more than the original core... and it's 1/2 oz lighter and 3 bearings more.  That's got to be worth $20, huh?

$20 more than the standard Core, yes.  $20 more than $349, well.

The original Core 100 is overpriced to start with. The Core reels should have been in the $250-$289 price bracket. They go for that or less on ebay.. I'd never pay retail for it.

What does eBay have to do with the MSRP of a product?  The $250-300 bracket in the Shimano lineup is filled by the Chronarch.

eBay actually does give an indication as to market value.  I wish Shimano would've just redesigned the Chronarch 50 Mg instead of moving it up to the Core.  I think they (Shimano) just assume that all the 50 Mg customers will step up to the Core 50 Mg.  I have a 50 Mg that I got a deal on, but it's going to have to be a bigger discount for me to step up to a Core Mg.  I'm sure it's a great reel, but I think they've moved it up out of the range of a lot of "once a month" fishermen like me.  :)

That's true. The new Core is definitely "high end". Stick with

the Curado 200E7. I recently acquired this reel and the new

Curado is an outstanding piece of equipment at a reasonable

price. MSRP isn't bad, but these reels are readily available for +/-

$150.

I was prepared to buy several reels that replaced the 50MG but I already have a core and I wouldn't buy another at that price. There just isn't that much difference in the new core to justify it.

It's the Steez killer.

To the contrary... I'll be buying a steez instead, because the new core isn't much different than the old core... which IMO is a nice reel but not really any better than the 50MG was and nothing worth $350. :-/

The $250-300 bracket in the Shimano lineup is filled by the Chronarch.

Yup, a 9+ oz. reel that doesn't do anything the Curado won't do. The Chronarch is actually the Zillion's best selling point. ;D

Thank goodness the new stradic came out... otherwise it would have been a dismal showing for Shimano last week.

Hey Bantam, you better tell them not to scrap the 50MG tooling... you guys might need to bring that one back later to save the day.

x2.i love shimnao and the core is super sexy but not for that price...not when there are other reels out there that offer close/same or better at a lower price.i mean for that price you can buy 2 curados,or just about 2 of any high quality reel.and $380 for a $100 looking reel???? i know its whats under the hood that counts but eh for me ...no core this year, not with all the other options out there at lower prices...i guess shimano doesnt take our "economy" into factor anymore haha.either theyll sell or they wont, but for me ill wait for a price drop or closeout when they arnt selling. :)

the core is the "halo" product in shimano's lineup of low-profile baitcasters that the everyman can aspire to and is priced accordingly. halo products are not volume sellers but they do cast a positive glow over all their other lower products. besides, some/many people will still buy it at full MSRP.

i wouldnt be surprised if that reel has a nice price drop in a year,"halos" dont tend to do so well with our booming economy these days, our lovely car manufacturers could tell you this one.but id put money on it that the core will hit the $300 or lower mark in the future..near,\

IMHO, the new Core is definitely Shimanos response to the Daiwa Steez.  I own 2 Steez and have cast a Core 100 a few times and I am no expert but for me I can cast longer distance with the Core.  I love my Steez reel and rod combos and until you fish with a Steez combo  you cant begin to understand how the weightlessness is such a pleasure to fish with especially when fishing plastic worms or shakey heads very slow.

I purchased a Core 100 on ebay yesterday for $288, I should have it tomorrow and cant wait to fish with it.

Bottom line is companies dont make their high end expensive products to appeal to the masses, they simply make it to show everyone what can be produced or beat out a competitor.

Im really surprised the new Core isn't at least $400 because the compaines also know there are a few suckers like me that will pay the high price just to have something new and cool or bleeding edge.

You went off topic and your post was deleted.

Regarding the Curado, re-read the post in context: If you only fish

once a month and don't want to spend extra money on the Core, the

Curado is a fine reel.

Regarding the Stella FD, it's a very nice reel! However, if you are

interested in "value", the Stradic is a much better deal.

I sure am...  I totally forgot about the new creamy white Curado!!   ;D

My beef with the "new" core is that it's so close to the same as the original that it hardly warrants excitement.

I am no expert but for me I can cast longer distance with the Core

it holds way less line than the steez, so your turning less mass in the spool.  Which is wonderful, if you like light line or use braid.   :-X

Want to trade a steez for a core?   :)  I hate to see you shorting your casts.  I'll pick up shipping on both sides.   :)

I'm just curious about Shimano's pricing.  I'd never say any of the reels from the Citica on up aren't good.  But it seems to me that you get far less between whatever you have and the next model up than the price difference would suggest.

For instance, there is a $120 difference between the Curado and the Chronarch.  Yeah, you get metal sideplates with Chronach, but not much else.  If you want a lighter Chronarch, you can pay $20 more for the Core.  If you want a smaller Core, you pay $20 more to get the Mg.

I guess for me, the problem starts with the price difference between the Curado and the Chronarch.   I don't think the $20 price increase from the Chronarch to the Core is unreasonable, or $20 more than that for the Mg.  But $120 from the Curado to the Core seems out of hand.  I just don't see $120 more performance.  And that throws the price of the rest of the reels out of kilter.

I already bought the Core 100 and look forward to getting a new Core 50.  Oh and you can get my Steez's when you pry them from "my cold dead hand".  hehehe

Now back on topic, when does anyone think we will be able to actually purchase a new Core 50?

I don't have a problem with the Core's pricing point, but it isn't a Steez killer; the Steez is just a more refined reel.  Even at $370, the Core still has handle backplay.  As said before, this probably won't cost you fish, just like a loose bezel on a rolex won't affect the time, but it shouldn't be there.  This is high-end...right?  Do I plan on buying a Core 50?  Absolutely, I will be buying two of them when they hit cabelas....they are going to be sweet.  I'm just not buying a corvette and expecting a ferrari.

I would hope that everyone who is participating in this thread and that is commentating on the shimano Core actually uses it or has atleast tried it. I own a Core, a curado e7 and a curado e5 and as much as i love the curados when i use my core i notice a huge difference. The core is a amazing reel. I have it matched on a cumara and the combo is far greater than any other combo i have ever tried. That said do i think its worth that much more than a curado.... yes, but i do not have 3 of them. Every reel has its place. My curado e7 is used for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits and my curado e5 is used for crankbaits/ treble hooks. My core is used exclusively for soft plastic. This conversation is like the one that was going on not too long ago about stradic vs sustain. I own a sustain and like it alot more than my brothers stradic. Personal preference. And above all this shimano offers the best service of any company i have ever dealt with

I wouldnnt trade my core for anything and i think its worth every penny!

*** has them stock and they're sellin'. just watch the real-time inventory: http://www.***.com/descpage.html?PCODE=SC50MG#

price or no price, shimano will sell these in decent numbers. i'm even thinking about one...

You're an evil, evil, evil man...

I should have mine by Tuesday. :-[

You guys are killing me!

Just ordered my Core 50.

Should have it Monday ($10 Fedex priority shipping)

If its sweeter than my Core 100, it will probably melt in my hand.
