Horrible schreeching noise!

Featured Replies

I just bought a new baitcaster, and whenever i throw it there is a loud noise that i want to get rid of. I see Bill Dance use a spray bottle on his reels. What product is that/where can i get it? And would that help?

BTW i have 50 lb power pro on

Thanks,

VC

What reel???

Try some oil on the shims and spool support bearings, and no I wouldn't use anything that DA sprays or puts on his reels...

Why 50 lb line, you planning on catching 50lb bass??   :D

Tight Lines!!!

What's the name of your bait caster and what did you pay for it ?

Bill Dance sprays KVD Line and Lure Conditioner on his reels but it's for managability purposes, not gonna help in your case.  Probably needs some lubrication like reel mechanic said but knowing what reel would help also.

Did you say "new"?Ouch! That is not a good start!

Was it dropped? Sounds like dry bearings maybe.

Can you return it? Exchange for another?

If this is a Quantum I have heard the brakes make an awful sound when engaging.

Quantums do make a sound when casting, the newer ones, I have an energy, seem to have corrected this some what, it's not very lound but still a sound.  I wouldn't call it a screech as much as a loud hum like a "zzzzzzzz" sound, my old energy was pretty bad and it's very prevelant when you watch coverage of KVD.  I also have a Code and it's not so bad.

If its BRAND NEW, take it back!!!

I have a couple of older IR3s that squeal like a banshee. Its definitely the brake shoes making the noise. This will sound uncharacteristically low tech coming from me, but I've found that spitting on the shoes quiets it in a pinch, LOL. When you get home, take a Q-top loaded with a drop of high quality reel oil, and swab the metal ring in the brake case.

If it is a new reel I would contact the manufacturer, or simply take it back and exchange it. IMO no new reel should make abnormal noises. In my frame of mind... if it is making a noise right out of the box, what might happen in a few weeks, months, years? Just a suggestion.

I'd be willing to bet a bag of Roosters that his new reel is an Abu Premier.

If so, send it back to Abu for a quick fix.  You can put all the oil and grease you want into it and it won't fix it.  How do I know?  I had 2 that did this. >:D

Hmm...

The answer is simple: Take it back for exchange. I don't

care what the problem is. If a reel doesn't work right out

of the box, get another!

I would have done that already but i have like $15 worth of line on it  :-/

Spool the braid directly from the reel it is on to another reel. Then when you exchange the reel spool it back on.

It will probably cost more than $15 to get it fixed anywhere. Spool it around anything round and put it back on once you exchange it. Cabelas will stand behind all their branded products.

Cabelas will exchange it, but i think all it needs is a good lubrication. Who knows how long it's been sitting in a hot warehouse ???

Cabelas will exchange it and you can see if you can get the guys in the Reel dept to change the line over for you. My Prodigy hasn't had any problems at all and got mine on sale a couple years ago.

Take it back for an exchange and ask the guys if they can respool the New Reel with the line from the old reel

Can't Hurt

You gonna be sending them roosters FedEx or UPS?  Just remember to poke a few holes in the bag so they can breathe.
