My New Combo (:

Featured Replies

Today at bass pro shops i went shopping for a new combo for my late birthday present. I went in with a clear head of knowledge, knowing which rods are tip heavy, balanced, over and under rated, and a grazing eye ( Im not loyal to any one brand like the shimano daiwa guys ) I walked in, took a quick glance over the rods and reels, and found a nice saleswoman to help me.

There was this suspicious pro qualifier reel there, called the "Pro Qualifier Tournament" It was 20$ cheaper than the normal PQ. So i asked what the difference was, and honestly she replied " The color and the internals are different because you can feel the difference."

Ahhhhhhhhh :) I found me a nice, honest sales-woman (unlike gander mountain who says everything is top of the line [Over priced too IMO] )

So we got to talkiing about the different reels and what we use them for and why etc etc. And she asked me if i was going to buy a pole today?

I said i was and by that time i was decided on the Carbonlite RH 6.4:1 or the PQ RH 7.1:1. so we took the reels with us around the store looking at rods and balancing them blah blah blah. First we went to loomis and well, my budget didnt allow it. So next stop on the list, St.Croix!

We got there and oogled at the avids for a while but,, it was $13 over all my money i brought. So next on the looky list was The BPS carbonlite rods, and Falcons (which i knew was a good brand but had no intention of buying)

So we couldnt find the Carbonlites!!! I don't understand!? >;) Turns out every store on the East coast probably wont have any for like 2 weeks.

So my options were limited then , I could get a St.Croix Mojo (which was terribly tip heavy ) A Vendetta (Which was terribly heavy and quite too flashy for me) So after that on the way to the Falcons we looked at Shimanos and Daiwas, none were what i was looking for. And on tho the Falcons, which i was guessing i wasnt going to get. So right now im feeling kind of bad i have to get a Mojo or a vendetta or some other rod. But the sales-woman said try this Falcon BuCoo. It was a 7' H/F rod. (I was looking for MH/F) And she said its more like a MH than an H so i slapped a carbonlite on there.

Let me tell you it was like a dream! It was such a light combo, balanced nicely, ( The colors didnt blend very well but who cares?), And the thing was SOOO sensitive! each little tap on the pole felt like electricity running up my arm!

I couldnt believe it ! I had gotten a pretty sick combo as another salesman pointed out to the others for only $220! Then tax was a *****. pushing it to like 235-ishh. So i bought a reel cover, rod sock, Fuji EZ keeper( because the hook keeper is really nothing special ) And a couple of spinnerbaits, Some Sufix Seige 17# Camo color, and an Ardent reel cleaning kit.

Boy, let me tell you I was extremely happy with my purchase and the service at Bass Pro, Its so nice to talk to people who ACTUALLY KNOW about what they're selling, and will actually say that some of there product sucks.

And I will be going out fishing and then too dinner with the nice sales-woman next week :)

Sounds like a good set up!  I'm sure you will catch a bunch of fish with it.  I too got a new combo today a Shimano Curado 200E7 and a G loomis BCFR 954 GLX Flippin stick w/ 65# Sufix braid.

I also bought a Falcon Bucoo that was medium heavy and 7ft.  I put my shimano scorpion 1001 mg on it and now it is the lightest baitcast combo in my whole house.

I love my Bucoo, I have a Citica 200e on it.

  • 2 weeks later...

congrats on the new setup!!!

I have 2 of the PQT's and they're essentially a CarbonLite in a different color, different handle and no clicking cast control.  The spool is not drilled as much either.  I'm very happy with the reels.

I was very happy with the Carbonlite reel when I had one.  I had to return it because the side plate release pin started to corrode.  Mind you, I bought it when they were first released, so I may have caught one in a run of duds.  Just keep your eyes on it.  Caught a bunch of fish on the one I had.  Smooth casting and very light.

They have a different main gear material as well.

I have the same 7'H bucoo mated to a curado and its the only combo I find myself using most of the time

I played around with the PQ and PQT in store and just by turning the handle they were of noticeably lower quality than the normal PQ's. I thought the extremes performed better then the PQT's , but im glad to hear you were happy with them Jason!

I'm looking to pull the trigger on a Carbonlite baitcaster. Would like any comments, positive or negative.

Heres a good one: Pro Qualifier VS. Carbonlite

Any comment

Pro Qualifier Vs. Carbonlite

The only difference is weight.

The Carbonlite is some 6.7 ounces I believe, with the Pro Qualifier coming in at about 9.7... ( Note: I may be off a tenth of an ounce or so )

Basically the Carbonlite reduced weight by using a carbonfiber recurve handle, and a slightly more drilled spool, the internals are the same.

And well the colors are different as well.

Another difference is the models it comes in. The Carbonlite only comes in RH 6.4:1, while the PQ comes in LH/RH and alot of different gear ratios.
