Wow. New low in customer service.

Recommended Posts

Recently bought a Quantum Xtralite Combo at a local store for around $24.  Really wanted the rod for a different reel.  Figured what the heck.  Well something in the reel broke.  No biggie.  I box it up put in a discript of what is wrong and mail it in.

Well I got a letter back form them.  They want $37 to fix it or $7 to return it.

Considering I paid $24 for the reel and a rod.  I dont think they will get anymore money. :)

Actually gonna take two other Quantums to the BPS spring trade in now for sure.  8-)

I got a couple of rods that may get gone too.

As for buying anymore.  >:)

Nope.

FWIW, I still have an original QMD10 and my  granddads 33 that I will keep. Both still work like they did from day one.

I can't believe you sent the reel off a $24 combo in for repairs in the first place. That's the one you should have taken to the BPS spring trade in.

Outrageous that a repair would cost more then the entire combo. That said its also why I prefer to buy the best reel I can within reason. I grew up fishing those Mitchell Garcia spinning reels and they are not costly. They have always been very dependable for me. I know they cost more then the entire setup, but they last. Im assuming they have no warranty on what ya bought. Then again this is why I prefer Pure Fishing products, they stand behind their stuff.

It has to work, before they will take it. Just was sharing what I thought was funny. Like SeanW said, "Outrageous..."  Oh well.  Spend my money elsewhere.

and where you spend is the best way to deal with it. Lifetime customers are golden, yet some company's just dont get it.

Ern I'm with you. Even when buying a $24 combo, you should have an expectation that it will work. Granted it might not work long or well, but should work nonetheless. I would think the local store would make it good since it is a very recent purchase.

Wasn't that I was ticked about a $24 combo reel breaking. Go throught that in lures in a trip. The fact they wanted more to fix the reel (half again) than the combo cost. Would be like buying a $300 combo having the reel break and being asked $450 to fix the reel for ya.

Like I said. Money will be well spent elsewhere.

Where did you send it too? Quantum? They are usually very good about fixing things - no questions asked.

Not really. There's no mention about this being a warranty claim. It's takes time to open the reel and access the problems. Time costs money. People need to get paid when they work...I know I like to get paid when I work :)

This. It cost more to ship that reel in for repair than it's worth.

Bad customer service, or unreasonable customer expectations?

Welcome to the Quantum-Hater's club Ern!  I happened to be a card carrying member.

I bought two Quantum BC's last year.  Got a TOTAL of 11 casts out of them BOTH.  Yeah, that's TOTAL.

Got 3 casts out of the first KVD sig series reel (similar to a Code series, about an $80 reel) and the gears froze up.  Returned to BPS.

Got 8 casts out of an identical reel I bought off a local guy for $25.  Thumb bar froze up after a long cast.  Couldn't move anything.  Spool just free-wheeling.  Ended up hand-over-handing the line to get my crankbait back.  I then stripped the line off the spool, removed the reel from the rod, and BAPTIZED it.

A.B.Q. from now on.

It is strange that it would cost more to repair the reel than to total cost of the reel but I wouldn't expect much for $24.

Did you call ahead to ask how much it might cost to repair/return?

If a combo only cost $24 in the first place the reel portion is probably worth 15-$20 retail, wholesale probably less than 10 bucks.  Bench time without parts is worth more than $10, should have just thrown in the garbage, hardly worth spending the shipping costs back to them.

Yep.  I sent in a reel.  I got a letter back wanting more to repair said reel than I could go buy said reel and another rod for.  There is something Fishy?   >:)

I've had several Quantums and I have yet to find one that I thought was worth the money I spent on it. I checked one out when I worked at Cabela's and took it with me on a trip to Mexico. It was the blue PT burner. I didn't the feel of the reel and it did not have a very good drag system. It spent most of the trip in the lodge while I was on the water catching fish with my shimanos. I had one of the Energy spinning reels in the 20 size and it made it less than a year before it sounded like an egg beater.  :-/

You're not only sending a Chinese made reel back for repair, you are sending back a cheaply made Chinese reel back for repair using American labor.

Hard to tell what happened here.  No clarification other than, "Well something in the reel broke."  Reels usually have a warranty.  Things like this usually get "repaired by replacement."  I'd have simply gone back to the store where I purchased the combo, provided it was indeed a defective item.  If that didn't work, a phone call usually does.

In my 50 years of fishing, I've owned exactly one Quantum baitcaster. That number won't increase.

Unreliable products backed by non-existent customer service.

Uhhh....

If you lived in China, the likely manufacture country of that rod n reel combo, you could probably easily find somebody to repair that for less than what you paid for it.

But this is America!!  You bought a disposable item built in some sweat shop.  When it breaks you throw it in the trash can.  How you could possibly believe that anybody in this country could fix that rod for under $24 is beyond me.   ::)

Wow... Does anyone here actually like Quantum? I have yet to have an issue with their customer service. I emailed them when I couldn't find a schematic for my reel and had it fairly quickly. I also had a reel completely lock up, sent it into them, repaired no questions - this was still under warranty though.
