Pflueger President vs. Supreme Spinning

Featured Replies

I am looking to pick up a new reel and I have my sights on the Supreme 8030MG and President 6730XT. I don't know which reel to get, but the difference in price is only $10. I've been using the blue President and love the reel so I going to pick up the Pres XT, but for $10 more, here I am with this dilemma.

I read that people have had issues with the deep spool from the Supreme as well as dirt easily getting into the holes of the spool. Can someone help me choose which one to go for? I might just see which reel balances my new rod better, but want some opinions first.

the supreme is a much better reel than the president.it's far lighter also.almost 2/3 the weight of a president.

The Supreme is a great reel. Has a faster gear ratio than the President, weighs less, runs smoother, I love my 8030MG. It handles 3-5 lb. bass with no problems. YoZuri Hybrid Ultra Soft 6lb., 12 lb. breaking strength....perfect setup on a 7' med. action Quantum rod.

If for some reason the world was turned upside down, I'd be buying the Supreme - faster gear ratio and weight would be my selling points.  That said, I've seen quite a few used Presidents, and they are tough little buggers.  Flooger makes a good spinner, can't really screw up with either.

I would say supreme, mainly for the fact that I can't stand the color of the president XT.

I have both. I got a Supreme for the light weight to put on a Loomis GLX spinning rod, and just got the President for general duty on a BPS spinning rod. I guess you just have to determine the value you place on the lighter weight. As J Franco said, you can't go wrong either way.

I can't vouch for the President as I don't own one nor have ever fished one BUT I own two Supremes - an 8025 XT and a 8030 regular Supreme. Both of them fine reels.

i can't speak for the Supreme....but i do have 2 of the 6730 Presidents and really like them....no problems at all.  i use the 6lb yo-zuri ultra soft on both...

Thanks, I'll be picking up the Supreme.

Definitlay the Supreme!

I have the Supreme XT and it is the lightest, smoothest and best looking reel I have ever owned.

You wont regret it!

I have two Supremes (8035MG) and a President XT (6735XT) and there is very little difference in functionality between the two different models. If you really need/want the lighter reel, go with the Supreme. If the weight isn't a concern and you'd like to save a few bucks, the President XT is a d**n fine reel.

You made the right choice. I think the president XT wasnt necessary in flueger's lineup. Ive have used regular presidents for years HEAVILY, with little to no maintence. Done evrything from catfishing to stripers but mostly bass fishing and they've handled it all with 0 issues. The XT just doesnt justify the extra coin. If it were lighter, perhaps. But it isnt.

I disagree. I've looked at the President many times over the past few years but that wooden knob kept me from buying one. While the XT may not offer any real improvements over the standard model, it does come with the same "soft touch" knob as the Supreme and Arbor, which feels MUCH better in my hand than the wooden one.

That alone is worth the extra $10 to me, but the upgraded carbon fiber drag of the XT adds to the price increase as well.

Also, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the XT has an Alu/graphite frame while the standard model is strictly graphite. I could be wrong about that, though.

If I'm not mistaken the president xt can be used for saltwater and I think it just replaces the medalist which I no longer see on pflueger's website.  If that be the case the supreme xt is a good entry to saltwater.

I have had a supreme for 3 years now and it's my only spinning reel, I love it.

Excellent choice. I have 3 and not one problem from any of them. I like the 8030MG the best.

I have a question about the deep spool if anyone can help answer.

Do you use any backing for lighter line, eg. 6lb?

If you do, can I use 10lb backing into 6lb?

Also, how does it handle heavier line such as 10lb?

Braid?

I would like to know before I start spooling.

I have both of my Supremes (8035MG) spooled with 30# braid with just enough 8# or 10# mono backing to cover the spool. I've been using 8# fluoro leaders lately, so I just spool as much braid as I can fit and tie on a 4'-6' leader.

FWIW, the 8035MG will hold almost an entire 150yd spool of 30# Powerpro.

You could use an old shoelace as backing, it's just there to take up space. The size of the backing does not matter IMO.

10 lb would be the very outer limit for mono on a spinning reel. I'd be more comfortable with 8 lb, but that's me.

Braid = yes
