I am in the market for 10 rod sleeves. I was looking at all the different ones and have even found a few people selling homemade ones. Anyone here ever make their own? I was thinking a little experiance with the sewing machine and I could make my own...

The stick jacket style are the way to go.  No muss, no fuss.  You can cram a rod locker full with no worry about rods tangling.

I tried to make one once. I used a couple of old bath towels.  Didn't work out so well because it was too heavy.  I cut it in half and it works good for my 2 piece rods. 

I looked into buying flannel but it was more expensive than buying a rod sleeve.  Maybe if you are making ten it would be more cost effective. 

I really like the Cabela's rod sock with the built in hook tube. I have some of the rod slick mesh covers and I find that they wear the paint off the guides and the hooks get tangled in the mesh if you don't keep it rolled up.

Exactly.............before I got stick jackets, I could fit 6-8 rods in my small rod locker on my Bass Tracker, now I can fit 12 or more in there, it's tight but they fit and they glide right in and out.

stickjackets = priceless

The Rod Glove makes a great one. Tapered tips allow you to slide them in rod organizers easier.

stick jackets are what i use and they have never let me down.

I always trim off that tag real neat and close to the eyelet at the end of the stickjacket.

Also, everytime I have bought a steez rod from TW they have included a stickjacket for free  when I asked.

Ah, yes . . . . rod prophylactics.  They aren't full-proof as they sometimes tear. 

Here's your answer. I asked my mom, who has been sewing for the better part of 30 yrs to make some rod socks for me . Thinking that this will save money and i will be able to customize them as we go, it would be a good project. The first item we encountered was the material itself. We tried different one's but most were to heavy and really laid hard on the tip of the rod. We finally decided on a material much like the outer layer of a wind breaker jacket. This works well because its slick enough to ride over the rod guides and lite enough not to cause damage to the tip of the rod. Next was length, we solved this problem by simply making each one the same length and then sewing some velcro on the end so i could fold the end over and velcro it to length i needed. Next was the inside stitching, since i had no knowledge of this area, i left it up to moms to decide what was best. After several tries the best solution was to double stitch the inside seam. A single stitch kept getting hung up on the rod guides. The last thing was to sew some velcro to the bottom to secure it in place. After all was said and done, we spent more time, and money building these than actually ordering some. To quote my mom after all was said and done " if you want any more of these things you're gonna have to buy them" ;D ;D. It was a fun build and we actually made six of them the last ones went pretty smooth thank goodness

Good find.  Reasonable prices on those spools.

BTW.  I don't use Stick Jackets but actually have ones that our very own 5BL has sold on here from time to time.  They've lasted a good 3-4 years and work excellent.

Cut off the tag, get some heat shrink tubing and slowly (so you don't melt the plastic) heat the shrinktube on the end. Might save some $$$ if you buy a bunch.
