Best lake in the Johnson/Wyandotte county area imho. Not many bigger fish but lots of them and the smallmouth are coming along really well, should be a good population of fish around a pound this year to keep things interesting.

I used to live about 5 minutes from the lake and now I'm only about 15 minutes and fish it a lot. It's a pretty deep lake for its size (400 acres with spots close to 60ft deep) lots of rock banks and some laydowns. Water is generally pretty clear so it does get tough during the hotter months but fish can still be caught. You can get all your permits at the boat house when they are open (pretty sure they're closed on Tuesday and Wednesday). It's a great lake if you like to finesse fish, probably won't like it much if you like to power fish. The lake record smallie is 4 3/4lbs I think and was caught in '07 so there is some nice smallmouth in there. I've caught them up to 3 pounds but most of them I catch are around a pound or so.  A good trip for me out there will be around 20 or 30 fish with about a 60/40 ratio of largemouth to smallmouth.

Can't find the prices for this year but last year it was 50 dollars for a season boat permit and 30 dollars for a season fishing permit without the trout permit, with the trout permit is another 20 dollars.

Oh yea and I'm pretty sure you have to get the boat permit at the boathouse in the marina cove on the lake. It's closed Tuesday and Wednesday and KS cranker is right that it's cash only.

Wyandotte has been hot the last couple times I've been out! The smallmouth population seems to be really taking off with the average fish being around a pound.

My wife and I went out there with a friend Tuesday night and in about 2 hours had a limit of trout, largemouth and smallmouth, wiper, walleye, and 1 huge white bass. My wife finally got a chance to fish her new Avid Pearl rod and seems to like it pretty well. Her trout.

and her monster white bass, should have weighed this one but I'm guessing it was between 2 1/2 and 3lbs.

My buddy with his walk off last cast of the day keeper walleye, one of 2 we caught.

I've got tomorrow off. Thinking about heading to WyCo. Anyone have any tips on what has been going on out there lately? Seems like everytime I go I catch a few here and there, but haven't been able to find any sort of patterns. Mainly looking for smallies, but whatever wants to bite is fine with me!

Man I wish I could get out there. I've got the day off but I'm pretty sure the wife is going to keep me pretty busy :( . Get out there early as possible. The gate is supposed to open at 6am but I got out there at 5:15 Tuesday morning and the gate was open already. Points have been pretty key for me lately. They start along the edge of the weedlines in the mornings and back off into 8 or more feet of water later in the day. If you really want smallmouth fish the small point to the left when you first get to the mouth of the marina cove. I caught a couple nice smallmouth right off the back of the boats on that last dock. Right on the boatramp can be good on the washout early in the morning. If you go to the bank straight across from the marina cove and head right to the first major point that is a spot that almost always has smallmouth on it. I've been doing best with a 1/8 or 3/16 ounce shakeyhead with a watermelon/red, watermelon/purple, or watermelon candy trick worm. Biggest smallmouth on Tuesday was a solid 16" fish, had 8 smallmouth and 12 largemouth when I left at noon.

Fished the Wednesday nighter this week and it was tough! Got 3rd with 1 fish, only 3 fish weighed in but finally had a keeper smallmouth brought in! Had awesome color on it and was 19.5 inches and 3.64 pounds. An inch shorter and half a pound lighter than the one I caught out of there this spring so there's at least 2 keeper smallies in there!

I'll add to another keeper smallie that was caught - 7/31 - 19" 3.3lbs - It was a major fighter!

Going out tomorrow morning to hopefully catch a few fish... Sure wish the weather would cool down!!

Supposed to be a little cooler and on the front edge of a cold front so you may do really well. Flipping a California Craw Rage Craw into the water willow was best for me Wednesday night. The guys that caught the big smallie said they were fishing deep but didn't say how deep or with what. We got very few shakeyhead fish. My biggest smallie of the night was on a 5/8oz Jewel Jig in watermelon red with a GP twin tail trailer. They should be chasing shad first thing in the morning again, especially if it's cloudy and calm.

For whatever reason, the massive surface attacks on the shad didn't seem to happen this morning. The wind was up a little so that probably had a lot to do with that. Caught a lot of fish, but didn't really have anything of any size. Found one area that was full of bass up to 14" that loved to hit every topwater bait I threw at them. Tried to replicate that on other areas, but seemed only that one spot was of full of bass.

I haven't spent any time flip the willows... guess I should try that at some point. Might make it out there on Monday...

Sometimes they seem to really be in schools on that lake. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the clear water, lack of cover, and lots of shad. Flipping the weeds is a good tournament technique out there but not really much fun since it's just a yank and they're in the boat. This cool front should really start to turn them on out there!

Don't know why I never posted my big smallmouth on this thread. She was 20.5 inches and 4lbs 3oz. Caught her on a shakeyhead in about 10 feet of water on the bank straight across the lake from the marina cove.

Fished Wyandotte on Tuesday until my trolling motor batteries died, forgot to charge them <_< . The smallmouth were biting really well with lots of fish on squarebills, shakeyheads, and a popper. Caught the biggest largemouth I've caught out there in a long time at 3lbs 10ozs

101_1188.jpg

Got her on a shakeyhead out from under a dock in about 10 feet of water.

Took a picture of one of the darkest smallmouth I've ever caught out of there, also on a shakeyhead under a dock but right on the bank.

Fished the Wednesday night tournament and took 2nd with 3.34 lbs and big bass with a whopping 1.82lber

I believe they start in April sometime. They're wednesday nights and start at 6pm and run until 9pm or later. There used to be some info on them posted on a information board right by the boat ramp.

Great! Thanks for the information I'll be looking for that. Maybe I'll check with the guy at the marina for the personal information of the guy in charge of it. I have fished that lake my whole life and still have'nt figured it out yet. Looking forward to fishing bass tournaments I've always wanted to for the sport and challenge of fishing against other testing my skill.

Wyco is a tough lake for sure but about as good as they get around here. I won 3 of the tournaments in a row last year and then didn't win another. I got second and third a few times also. It's a good group of guys and I had a lot of fun. Unfortunately my work schedule isn't going to allow me to fish them this year or I would be out there!

it would be good to know seasonal movements of smallmouth bass in that lake i've never been able to get a good grip on their

post-spawn/early summer preferences. I believe the more i focus on bass only i will learn more about how they use the lake during the transitional periods. Time on the lake is priceless, when it comes to gaining information about how the fish prefer to

use, feed, travel, stage, etc...

There are several spots on that lake that I can consistantly catch smallmouth but I think the baits you use are probably more important on if you're catching brown fish or green. Shakeyhead plastics catch most of my brown fish, jigs, chatterbaits, and topwaters catch most of my green fish.

I caught one that was 6 1/2 on a chatterbait in the marina cove and and a smallmouth that was 4lbs 3ozs on a shakeyhead off the bank to the the southeast of the marina cove. Unfortunately the big largemouth was before my camera carrying days. Jerkbaits are good for smallies in the spring but they head deep fast when the temps heat up.
