Fished Wyco with a couple friends a few days ago. Young Bradley was on his spring break and has really wanted to go fishing again since I took him to Miami State Lake last year. We all caught fish all day long and had a really good time. Bradley caught several bass and a little wiper.

My friend Jon had plenty of fish himself including a couple pretty nice smallmouth on jerkbaits.

I ended up with 57 bass, mostly largemouth, 14 crappie, including one on a popper, 3 wipers, 1 white bass, 1 green sunfish, and 1 warmouth. Most of my fish were on jerkbaits or poppers with a few on wacky rigs, shakeyheads, and a jig also. They were really eating the popper.

We didn't catch anything real huge but it was still a really fun day.

I've still never caught a smallie and have caught very few Whites... It looks like it was a fun time.

Back to the state lake this morning! The bigger fish wanted to play today!!!!! Nothing big but the average 2# size fish were hard to find but I found quite a few in the 3-4# range. Let's just say I was happy.

First fish of the day a 4# chuncker that only went a hair over 19''

wow 57 bass!!!! great photos i recognize every place on the lake, seen any on beds?

Yeah we saw several on beds but left them all alone. No need to stick a fish on a bed out there. It's days like that where you see hundreds of fish and catch quite a few of them that make the days during the summer where you struggle to catch a dozen that much more frustrating.

Thanks for the info. Wish I would have known that. Last night would have been my only chance to fish one until July or August.

Fished Wyco for 2.5 hours after work today, wish it would have been a tournament night! We caught 3 keepers and probably could have had a 3rd that was in the 3 or 3 1/2 pound range but it came off at the boat while I was playing it out. I caught 17 bass and a keeper walleye also. All of our keeper bass were on shakeyheads but we caught quite a few bass on jerkbaits also including one really fat, healthy smallmouth in the 15-16 inch range.

Congrats on retiring! As long as there is still such a thing as retirement by then, I only have 40 more years to go :dazed-7:

Went out this morning from 8am to 10:30am, and caught 19 largemouth. No smallmouth. That wind was a killer today. Places I wanted to go, could not even get an attempt to try due to white cap conditions. Caught bass on everything I threw: craw papi, squarebills, jerkbaits, and shakyhead.

I was out there Tuesday morning, it was tough for me. Only caught 16, mostly largemouth with a few smallies plus a crappie, mostly on jerkbaits. They just weren't touching a shakeyhead and just pecking at my football jig. I was trying some new line on my shakeyhead rod because everyone talks so highly of it but I hated it, really stiff and looked like rope under water with it being so clear right now. Had to switch to my wacky rig rod with nanofil and a short leader to finally get a couple on a shakeyhead.

  • 3 weeks later...

hey guys how its going?

I'm new to fishing. Just started last year. Loved it when I catch fish. Was averaging about 4-6 a day last year but this year I cant catch a cold.

My roommate and I have to fish the banks cause we dont have boat. Seems like we have some good spots but we cannot get anything to bite.

Any suggestions fellas?

My wife and I fished Wyco for a few hours today. Nice weather like usual did not equal good fishing. Few on a shakeyhead, few on a chatterbait, few on a wacky rig, one on a squarebill. I had 2 keeper largemouths, one right at 15 on the wacky rig, the other was one of the cleanest looking fish I've ever caught from the 'dotte. Got her in 15' of water on a shakeyhead next to a stump, little over 17".

My wife was getting bit but having a hard time sticking them. She lost a largemouth that would have been a keeper right at the boat before she boated this nice smallmouth.

Well I hope I didn't use all my fishing luck up this morning. I was at the Dotte from 9:30-12:30, part of that time was spent putting new bunks on my trailer, and caught a 5 fish limit :respect-059: Nothing huge, biggest was around 17" maybe 2 3/4lbs but I didn't jump off another one the same size and one that would have gone over 3, so I could have been culling! At Wyandotte! All on the same bait which I can't share on here because I'll be fishing the Wednesday nighters later this year and I was doing something I don't think anyone else does and I want to see if it works again or if today was just a fluke.

Awesome! Don't worry you can PM me your secret as I'm taking a year off from Wyco!

I'm not going to be able to make the Melvern gathering on June 10th, thought I had a weekend all to myself, but the wife's plans changed. Sure would like to meet up with you guys someday though...

Why are you taking the year off from Wyco? I was just starting to think I'd forgotten how to catch fish in that lake until today. I'd been averaging 1 keeper a trip, pretty crappy. Haven't caught any smallmouth over 16 yet, couple 15's though. My buddy fishes the Wednesday nighters and has won it the last 2 weeks with 2 fish and a little over 3 1/2 lbs both times. I guess someone did have a 3 1/2 pound largemouth this week and there was a 3 1/2 lb smallie last week. At least a couple bigger fish have come in. Last year I think there was 4 or 5 over 3 lbs all year with a 5.8 being the biggest.

I fished the Wednesday night tournaments for a couple of years but haven't been to one since 2 seasons ago. Typically, it's a 1 or 2 fish tournament and I have never seen anybody turn in more than 3 fish. My kids baseball schedule got in the way of the tournaments and my partner had the same issue. Hope to get out there at least a couple of times for the tournaments this year. Good luck to you.

I think it was $25-$30 a team last year, seems like it was 25. 20 for the heavy bag then 5 a boat for big bass. It starts at 6pm and runs to 10 or 9 depending on the weather/time of year. My buddy has won it 2 weeks in a row with 2 fish each time. I won it 3 weeks in a row last week, once with 2 fish then twice with 3 fish. It's almost always won with 2 fish but sometimes it takes 3. Someone had like 8.86lbs with the only 5lber weighed in last year and that was the heaviest bag I saw.

Might have to stop by some evening and check it out. Wonder if everybody shows up paired or are there Non boaters looking for a ride?

I assume the fish are brought in and it is not a paper tourney.

I've never seen any non-boaters hoping for a ride at the ramp. You can fish it by yourself though if you'd like, I won it by myself once last year. My wife was with me so I wasn't really by myself I guess but she was there more for moral support than anything.

They do a weigh in in the parking lot and usually stand around and BS a little after it's over. it's a good group of guys for the most part and other than the fishing being pretty tough a lot of the time it's usually pretty fun.

The wife and I decided to brave the crowd at Wyco Sunday afternoon. Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Lots of boats but mainly anchored pontoons towards the dam so we fished the south end a lot. I had 3 keepers despite the crowd and added pressure they've been getting this weekend, all the same way I got my limit last week. Nicole is finally getting the concept of having to set the hook with a wacky rig instead of just reeling like she can with a crankbait. She had 3 smallmouth from 14-15 inches and a 14 inch largemouth. She lost what looked like a really good fish in the marina before we saw it also. Not bad considering she probably only fished for an hour and a half.

Hit Wyco today from 8-noon. Fishing was tough! After an hour I was still working on my first fish. Lost a big smallmouth on a shakeyhead, might have been bigger than my 4lb 3oz smallie from last year. Next fish was a 15 inch smallmouth, then a 17 inch smallmouth. Caught a short largemouth on the shakeyhead then a 17" smallmouth. Next fish was was my biggest of the year from wyco this year, 18" and 3.12lb largemouth on a pitboss in the weeds. A couple casts later I busted off another largemouth in the 17" range doing the same thing. I caught one more short largemouth and called it a day. Of course I caught some nice ones today, I forgot my camera! :(
