Anyone here try fishing the back of six mile behind the bridge?

I spent a few hours back there Friday.

Checking in, officially, for the first time, lol.  I have been following along with this thread anonymously for a year or two I guess.  

 

First fished TB as a youngster with the grandparents, I'm gonna say 35 years ago, give or take a year.  That went on for a handfull of years at the rate of 2 straight weeks at least once every summer.  After that, it had been quite a few years that i missed out on and now for the last few years I manage 2 or 3 trips a year with my own family.  Ive spent the last several trips really committing to learning the offshore game.  I may not have much to contribute often, but will when I can.

If one were to Google: Toledo Bend-spring time-bass fishing it would pull the 1215 area.

 

When "1215" is mentioned it's the vast expanse of water from the mouth of San Miguel Creek to where the old 1215 Hwy. comes into the water and continues to the "Christmas Tree" area.

 

Structure wise you'll find drains and ditches running through acres of flats, old roadbeds, & humps surrounded by deep water. 

 

Cover wise you'll find brush, laydowns, strumps, & a variety of grass though not as dense as down south.

 

Areas for close examination: San Miguel Pass to EW14

Thanks Catt, I had an idea that's what it was but wanted a better eye to confirm that's what I was seeing on my map.

 

Will be fishing the 1215  area tommorw or friday.

I love that area. Didn't go this year yet cause the water was low and I didn't think I could launch there but I'm itching to go. 

I went checked out the ramp today and feel the water is high enough for my 17.5 pro crappie.

 

Will be there tommorw at first lightdepending on the wind and weather got to check the weather station tonight.

I won't be able to practice for a club tournament this weekend. So I'm gonna live and die by some shallow San Miguel spots. How have they been fishing?

Frog bite has been good the last two days.

 

But I have been moving more to deeper water lately due to the fish starting to pull back, spawn seems to be coming to a end around my house.

 

Fishing more towards the park end of SAN Miguel to stay in the fish.

 

Fishing frogs on the shaded shore in the morning and then dropping back to sand bars and grass line's from 5 to 15 foot of water with cranks,traps,swimbaits,T and C rigs.

 

Then back to frogs late in the evening.

 

If you can find the bank with shad spawning up shallow in the morning thats where the best frog bites have been coming from.

Most people incorrectly think the normal lake level is 172.0'; 172 is full pool meaning any rise above that is the start of flood stages. The lake can hold more than 172 but now ya gotta have a water release which can or will cause down river flooding.

 

As of 4-18-17 5:30 AM the lake level is 170.26'!

I meant in February when I usually go to 1215 it was lower than it has been in the couple of years I been going regular. I realize 172 is not normal but I'd prefer it to be 170 or more for that area.

Its time for a couple of boats to start going north.  Our grass might grow a little if it did not get a haircut every day from the 22 million boats trolling in it

Mr. Dog, glad to see you back. I saw you were parked at the Lil restaurant at Six Mile last week when I left. Maybe we can carpool up North lol

Didn't get to fish as long as I wanted this morning but did have a great time and broke a rod on hook set.

We caught around 25 this morning. Nothing big, but I'm just keeping some kids on fish for fun. I'll be here until Saturday. Looking forward to looking around some new areas. 

Just what wanted to check in, its been a while since I've been on the bend or posted a report. I've been keeping up with this thread and check it almost daily. I don't get to go near as much as I'd like, its tough being a broke college kid lol. Anyways, I'm heading up early Friday morning with a couple of buddies and fishing Friday, Saturday, and sunday. We're staying at Fin N Feather and plan on fishing Housen, six mile, and mill creek so any reports from that area would be greatly appreciate. I will give a report(hopefully a good one) once our trip is over.

 

Thanks to everybody that contributes to this thread it has really helped me become a better deep water fisherman not just on Toledo but other lakes as well. If yall see 3 guys fishing in a charcoal ranger RT188 with mercury pro xs don't be afraid to say hi.

Ok, Catt I spent Wednesday afternoon and most of Thursday trying a few spots in the 1215 mostly around the Christmas tree area, here is what happened.

 

Me and a friend worked a few spots with cranks and Crig's and pulled a total of 14 bass most were in the 14 to 15 inch range, one bass went just over three pounds, we weren't able to fish it as good as I would have liked to due to the high winds and a my two small anchors weren't enough to hold us in position very long, got two new bigger anchors coming.

 

So we pulled back to shallow water around the island's next to the park and picked up anouther ten bass Wednesday afternoon and a nice 4.10 pounder.

 

About the same for Thursday morning, so we then ran back down SAN Miguel to a island and some flooded buck brush and picked up three bass full of eggs so they got put back, hooked up with a hog that broke me off when it got me in a brush top and broke me off.

 

Wish I could have given a better run down of how I went at fishing the 1215 area but I was not properly prepared with the right anchor gear to beable to learn how to fish it better, but new bigger anchors are on the way and I will be back to try it again.

 

Pic is of the 4.10 I got on a caffine swimmin shad in some pepper grass Wednesday afternoon.

Catt, What size and weight anchors do you use?

 

I have two ten pound mushroom style anchors, the kind you get at Wal-Mart dipped in black plastic.

 

I ordered two 20 pound anchors yesterday same style just heavier.

I use a 20# Tri-fluted river anchor with 30' of rope to anchor in 20-25' of water.

Ok thanks Catt, I'm going to cancel my order and get that kind instead, looks like it would hook the bottom better then then old mushroom style I'm useing now.

 

I have 50 foot of rope on mine, I use parachute cord on my anchors has a lil more shock and stretch absorption then typical anchor rope. And it doesn't take up as much room or leave a big pile of mess to get tangled up in in the boat.

1/2 or 5/8-in Braided Polypropylene, easy on the hands!
