Evidently no one has been fishing lately? 

 

Don't blame you, I haven't been out either!!     

Going to try to get to La Cygne on Wednesday I think. Going to depend on my schedule though, my wife's grandpa passed away Saturday night so I may not get a chance to get out. 

Made it to La Cygne today. Main ramp was frozen, I was the only boat on the water, not a puff of smoke, cold water, and I knocked their lights out. Water was only 51 at the outlet, 48 at the southernmost point of the rocks to the west. Not a ton of bass, half a dozen on a jerkbait, few on a hula grub, and one on a shakyhead.. The whites and wipers were on fire though. Didn't keep count, well over 50 for sure, mostly wipers from 3-5 pounds up to 7. Also had a 15 1/2 pound flathead. I'll have to. Add some of the pictures I took later.

No, I put in at the shallow ramp straight across from the outlet. I didn't catch many whites, mainly wipers. They were eating jerkbaits and not much else. Color didn't matter, brand didn't matter, location and retrieve were the only important parts.

My buddies and I caught a number of fish (mostly bass) on jerkbaits out there a few weeks back.

I even caught a few! You guys know how much i love jerkbaits.

Even caught a drum on one. Imagine that.

 I just can't make myself get out there under 40 degrees.   

Bluebasser and I took another shot at cast and blast yesterday. It was an awesome day!!! Started out duck hunting and at first light we had a flock of wigeon land in our faces which Clayton shot a drake out of, and that was the beginning of one of the most awesome mornings duck hunting I've ever had. We shot our limit by 0815 and probably could have been done by 0730 if my shooting had been better.

 

 

We had planned to fish afterwards so we loaded up and made the drive to Coffey County. We were worried that the wind would be blowing too hard for the guys at the gate to let us on, but it was steady at about 10-15 out of the SW when we got there. Water was a lot colder than we expected it to be, warmest we found was 55 right near the cable in the discharge. We made it about halfway up the discharge without a bite before Clayton picked up a war eagle finesse spinnerbait and proceeded to catch three largemouth in a row. He offered to let me use one but I stuck with one of mine. After he caught a couple more I had seen enough and tied on one of his baits. Took me two casts before I caught one. It was pretty steady for the next couple hours. We caught a pretty good number of chunky largemouth, a few smallmouth, several white bass, and a really hungry carp. Most fish came on spinnerbaits with a few on lipless crankbaits. One of the best days in the outdoors I've ever had!!

 

 I love those kinda of days I guess that's why we stick it out during all the crappy days just for that one great day that beat the last great day . ahhhhh gotta love fisherman

It really was a great day when it just seemed like everything came together and worked out great! It's what makes you get up at 3am, knowing you're going to be going out into the cold, because you never know when the next day like that will come around!

As promised, my fish from La Cygne on Tuesday. I lost a few of my pictures, including all my bass pictures from Tuesday, when my phone went swimming on the ramp when we were launching to go duck hunting Thursday

Like I said the water was cold and after catching one really small bass on a jerkbait, I decided to try a jigging spoon in the washout hole a little bit. It got whacked pretty hard right under the boat by this 15 1/2 pound flathead.

Next drop got smacked by a 4 pound wiper.

After that all I could do was snag big shad every drop so I tried a jerkbait again, it was on after that. Every cast was getting pounded by wipers or big white bass. No idea how many I caught but it was enough I had to change the hooks on my jerkbait 3 times because they were getting so twisted up and bent out, even my front hook hanger is twisted and bent. Lots of them like this in the 5 pound range.

My biggest and one of the last ones of the day right at 7 pounds. This one burnt my thumb she was peeling drag so fast.

With the 55 degree forecast for tomorrow I'm thinking about trying out La Cygne for the first time.

I am traveling from Lees Summit, do any of you have any suggestions for a first timer on this lake?

Any special permits required? Where should I launch? Any lake location or lure suggestions?

t will be packed so be prepared for that.

Shad colored jerkbaits, traps, squarebills, and swimbaits around the rocky banks towards the north end of the lake and around the outlet. If all else fails I like a shakyhead with a dark colored trick worm or stick worm in the same areas. A hula grub can be good too. I look for areas with larger shad.

Launch at the main ramp in the marina, it's $2 a day to launch.

Me and Peter are going to try it tomorrow around 11

Btw, be ready for 23mph winds.

I live in Missouri, my boat is licensed in MO, and have a MO fishing license. Do I need to get a Kansas fishing license and is there anything I need to get to make my boat legal?

I almost got skunked today at La Cygne until I snagged a shad with my jerkbait:)  I fished five hard hours using jerkbaits, spoons, lipless, shakeyhead, jigs......not a bite.

 

Water was about 49 degrees on the north side of the lake, and around 40 down by the dam.  It was pretty rough conditions(high wind and lots of pressure), but I expected to do better my first time out.  On the bright side it was a very decent drive for me(1 hour) and I really liked the lake, I plan on going back.

 

Does this lake produce in spring and summer as well?  Anyone else know of anyone that went today, how did they do?

La Cygne will beat you more times than it will produce for you in the winter, just the way it is. I still have days like that after fishing it a lot for several years.

 

It's still a pretty good lake in the spring but it gets really hot in the summer time. You can still catch fish but the water temps get into the high 90's on the main lake at times so fish aren't real interested in eating a lot of the time.
