Cyprus - Bass Paradise

Recommended Posts

Dear fellow bassresource readers,

First, let me introduce myself. I am Maxdal from France.

I have been enjoying the website for a couple of times now, mostly reading as my Post count proves. But I guess 2008 calls for some change ! :)

I thank the creators as well as all the participants of this noble enterprise to share the "gospel" of bass fishing around the globe for the amount of information they provided me with.

Thanks again to all of you and most of all Tight lines ... 8-)

I just read this thread on Cyprus bass fishing. I really feel sorry for you guys over there and the lack of rain. Hopefully it will change soon.

As for the french record T-Rig mentioned, it was caught in southern france, released and thus not officially certified (in practice you're kinda forced to kill it if you want to have it registered, which sucks)

Anyway, it remains, to this date, the biggest bass I have seen in Europe. Anybody can argue as to whether it was really a 11-pounder, but that's not my call. That fish is nice, period :)

Too bad there ain't no real "Record Org." in Europe, at least one centralized org. with tight rules.

Anyway, glad to be amongst you guys,

See you on the water.

Max

Welcome Lavrakos! Sounds like the situation in Cyprus is getting worse. I hope for you guys it rains.

Indeed it is getting really bad Daniel.... Although lately I have been working a lot hence my free time has been reduced (this is the main reason I no longer write often in the BR forum), the really bad situation is not helping either. We have had worse draughts, such as between 1998 and 2001, but this year the situation is far worse due to the uncontrollable illegal fishing. Although bass is not usually the target (the poachers are mainly targetting carp and zander), unfortunately many bass are also caught.... We are at the edge of destruction... >:) :) >:)

:'( :'( :'( :'(

Hi all

Im new to this forum but i practice bass fishing in Cyprus for about 16 years or so.. I remember catching my 1st bass @ yermasogia dam 9 years of age :) using the old faithful original floating...

I bring this topic up 1 year later since the last post BECAUSE..the winter has past and drought still continues..Bass Paradise is about to become a bass HELL, unless we do something. Im equipped with a big tank of approximately 0.6 cubic meters and my goal is to transfer some big bass into dams which are not threatened by the drought.

Kourris dams WILL be empty in give or take 90 days. In that period we will all see record sizes of largemouth and other species rotting under the boiling sun.. Someone should warn the departments responsible of a possible water contamination or bacterial/disease outbreak :).. If we can manage to scare them from removing that last drop of water

regard

greg

Lavrakos welcome , I'm sure you will enjoy been a member of this forum 8-)

Dear bass hunters!!!

My name is Alex and I'm from Russia.

I've never tried to catch bass because we have only pikes and perches in my country.

But I'm going to visit Cyprus in the beginning of April for one reason - to catch a BASS

If you don't mind, please, give me some practical recommendations for fishing on dams (when, where and how)

You should contact someone from Russian Bass League. They have a tournament in Cyprus on the 3,4,5 of April :)

Welcome aboard Lavrakos!

The situation here in Cyprus is really bad. The combination of the 4th consecutive dry year, along with the complete incompetence of our fisheries and water development departments as well as the illegal fishing by many foreign "fish collectors" resulted in the worst tragedy ever. Freshwater fishing here is almost completely destroyed. :'(

Below are 2 of our big dams and how they look today. You can clearly see where the water level should be:

Looks terrible, I feel your pain. What do you mean by foreign fish collectors?

Georgians , Bulgarians , Rumanians , Pontiac etc.

they fish for food and kill whatever they catch .

even a 5cm bass is good for them.

They consume huge quantities of vodka , light fire near the dam (prohibited), leave their garbage everywhere.

They use sea water nets 2 catch fish etc.

U got the picture.

holy molly..it's like the biggest drop in water level I've ever seen in a lake that is not being drained for reconstruction purposes.  :-/

I too feel sorry for you. Do Cyprians eat a lot of them bass themselves ?

not so many Cypriots fish

welcome aboard by the way  :)

Exactly. They come to this country to work by the thousands, to have a better future but they respect nothing. They drink a lot, stay at the banks of the dams overnight, use fishing nets, fish traps, litter everywhere and catch everything that moves in the water. They catch tiny bass (50-100gr) in huge numbers. For them there is no law. Many of them are illegally in this country anyway. As far as fishing licences are concerned....don't ask. >:)

Most Cypriots prefer sea fishing.  Since boats are not allowed in our dams, and since Cyprus is an island, most fishermen use the sea.  I think it would be safe to say that not more than 50-60 Cypriots go after the bigmouth.

Ok thanks for the input... cause I vaguely recall a website named charris-fishing something, where they had pictures with many dead bass... of course I'm not judging them by any means (since you said you're approx. 50 bass fishermen in Cyprus, they might as well be friends of yours).

But I remember that the picture with the biggest fish were often taken in the kitchen... too bad !

Too bad you have a lot of aliens killing the resource too, we tend to have a lot of problems with romanians and chinese people, but french are not innocent either. Too many french still kill too much and even snag bass on beds. :'(

Don't worry my friend, there is no misunderstanding here. Just let me explain how the situation goes. Until a couple of years ago, catch & release was something unknown to us. As I said earlier, not many Cypriots fish for bass. Imagine how it was 6 or 7 years ago. I remember going to the dams often for fishing and not seeing a single soul for hours. I believe that appart from a group of friends (me, Cybasser, Charis, Michalis, George) and a few visitors, nobody else was fishing for bass. Catching and removing bass from the lakes was not a problem at all. The lakes were overpopulated with bass. The real problem begun in 2005. The water level started dropping dramatically and the officials were not doing anything to support the lakes. Even then, bass was not in any real danger. The government started emptying two of our big dams for unknown reasons (I believe they did it to build desalination plants and get rich selling water). The last two years the water level has been very low. We are now in the 4th year of almost no rain (it rains about once every month during the winter period - imagine that!) and although we have 2 desalination plants (and another 3 on the way), we are facing a huge water shortage. All those foreigners we mentioned earlier are fishing every day killing thousands of fish.

In the mean time bass fishing is becoming more and more popular here. So you see, catch & release is now becoming essential for the future of our freshwater fishing. That is if there will still be any fish left after the next hot summer.

Unfortunately this is still the case for many bass anglers in Cyprus. They fish to eat >:)  Hopefully the water problem we have this year will make them to change...

a friend recently got a 3.480 kg bass

Congratulations to your friend ... Would you mind showing a pic, if you can get one ? :)

@Island bassin : I hear your concern. But I guess the ones that just fish to eat as much as they can won't see any occasion to change their behaviors in the tough drough you guys are experiencing right now.... I guess they will rather take advantage of large numbers of fish desperately swimming in what's left of your impoundments. So sad, guess it would happen it also.
