how to fish an ika

Very nice.  We dug through that boat for about 15 minutes looking for them.  After finding a few open packages of treble hook lures in the bottom we stopped.  I'm gald you found a few of the scraps we left behind.   :)

You will have to let me know how those work on Smithville Lake.  I know they work where we fish.

Vyron, I will post a picture as soon as I can get to it.

Why don't you just order them from GYBC and be done with it??????  They are not that expensive.

$7.48 per bag on Yamamoto's website :)  That is a lot of money for soft plastics IMO.  I must say though, that if I didn't pour my own, I would still buy them ;D

The Fat Ika still hasn't been "discovered." Away from BR members and GYCB fanatics, no one talks about it or uses it effectively. It can be your secret weapon. The Fat Ika has been my #1 producer for two years.

I don't believe you will get every get the right texture or color like GY does.

I'd just thought I'd add in about popularity. In Chicago the only stores that have them get like one shipment of them a year and they tend ot stay on the self. When I ask people about them they say yeah "I heard of those" or "I used one once" and the conversation seems to stop. When I'm up in Michigan the employees at several well known fishing stores have no idea that the Ika exists. Just thought I'd back up they aren't often used in the Midwest.

kbkindle,

The Fat Ika is 4". You are correct about the color I recommend, 194J, but other colors may be more effective for you.  I use a 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hook. This is a GREAT lure for smallmouth on lakes, but I'm not so sure about river fishing. The action of the fall on slack line is important and doesn't work as well in moving water.

how small of a hook can you go with for smallies on a regular ika?

The 4/0 EWG Offset Worm Hook is the only hook I ever use with a Fat Ika.

The GYCB website is www.baits.com

It looks great. Do you have an idea of how much you'll be asking for these?

Around KC I know of two people the use ika's, me and my buddy Fatman1267, and he uses them a lot more than I do. The Cabelas here carried the palm trees earlier this summer, but they quit carrying them because they were not selling. A few weeks ago he and I went out there and the shelves where they had been were empty. We ended up finding them in the bargain cave for .25 per bag. We bought them all.

oh you bum, no wonder i couldnt find em. hey by the way i saw some there last weekend. me and jayhawkfishin use em, im just starting with them.
