Your Story for Fishing 2008

Recommended Posts

Tell everyone about your best fishing story this year, or just your fishing experiences this year.

Okay, since I'm the starter I'll go first.

This year the best thing for me is probably when I first experienced my real buzz bait fish. It was just awesome seeing the bait buzz across the water and out of no where there's an explosion on your bait or even sometimes the whole fish come out of the water. Still the best thing about it is that the first fish was a 26 inch northern pike and right through the same area, a 3 1/2 pound largemouth smashes it again. This caused my Booyah buzzbait to bend and my skirt goes flying.

Share your stories. :)

i caught a 5lber, that was one of my goals.  i caught less fish overall but better quality, also a goal.  but i think the best thing i did was bought and learned to build my own custom fishing rod, thanks to keith and ronnie.  just got two more blanks this past weekend, looking forward to get working on those!!

I started this year off teaching my youngest son Scott the fine art of fishing a Texas Rig, every outing he has struggled trying to catch more than one. This past Thursday he finally caught a total of 4 and Friday a total of 3 with a personal best of 3 pounds 10 ounces.

The joy would be two fold if daddy could only get his other Calcutta back  ;)

I started out just wanting to be able to compete for a complete year without dealing with the numerous health problems that have hindered me the previous years. I have done that. I lead our club with over 123 lbs. I won our club's two day on Lake Fork last weekend with a black buzzbait catching an 8.19 and a 10.51 with a total of 29.11.

My favorite story of the year was getting the opportunity to compete as a co-angler in an Elite Series tournament.  It was a great experience and a huge learning experience as well.  I fished the Elite on Clarks Hill and fished with Casey Ashley, Brian Hudgins, and Skeet Reese.  I learned a whole lot from each one of those guys and I also got to meet Glenn and spend some quality time with him.  All in all it was one of the greatest experiences in my life!

The last week of April I stumbled upon a new "Secret Pond" near my house. This is the focal point of a somewhat isolated public park. In the month of May I caught 43 largemout bass, 38 of which were 5lbs+.

I didn't fish the pond nearly as much in June, but caught 27. These were the best two months of green bass "catching" I have ever had. As a sidelight, most of the fish were caught on jigs, a few on the Cavitron 3/8 oz buzzbait and a couple on topwater. During this period I never threw soft plastics, my strong suit!

8-)

Great idea for a thread!

Aside from the actual fish caught this year (one of my best years as far as "good" fish of multiple species), probably the best thing to happen was that I was able to reconnect with an old friend.

We fished together quite a bit several years ago, but then he moved, I have a child and am self-employed, etc.  So, we kind of lost touch for a year or two.

But, now he's back in town, and we have been fishing pretty regularly most of the late-summer and so far this fall (much to my wife's chaigrin!)

oh yeah...and not to mention my new pb Northern back in May of 42.25" !

Best thing of 2008 for me..

Bassmaster Weekend Series tourney on Champlain.. had a 40 mile run in some big waves 4-5 footers in a 19 foot Bass Cat. Go absolutley pounded and beat up. Turned white a few times and speared a couple of waves. Made it to the spot, fished for about 4 hours. Caught a ton of big smallies 3.5.-4.25. And was culling 4 pounders by 10am. Had the same 40 mile run back to the ramp in now 5-6 footers. Stopping every 15-20 minutes to refill the livewells because the plug went missing. Made it back just in time. Weight the fish and I know I had a 4+ average ( 3 fish limit), they come up 9 pounds and I'M ticked. Ask for a re-weigh, they come up 12.74 and I win and get a nice check that paid for all my Weekend Series events.

I didn't know anything about fishing until I got onto this website and started reading comments and articles. I was still fishing with bobbers and worms up until this summer. I really started getting into fishing, listening to what people were saying on here and their experiences. While fishing a spinnerbait at a local pond with a few friends of mine, I caught a pb largemouth that was about 7 pounds! Since then, I've been hitting different bodies of water, at least twice a week (and catching bass!). Oh, and the bait monkey jerking me around. I'm lovin it!

The best fishing story of my year was finally having my son, who turned five, go fishing with me on our first of many father/son fishing trips.

We went to the local 1 acre pond and his first fish was a first for both of us he caught a 9" Carp. Nobody was catching anything at the pond that day so when he pulled it in he got a lot of attention. All the kids and adults around us came over to admire his catch and congratulate him.

Many great moments for '08.

-I got to meet a few new members, some good ones in the mix that I'm sure will be friends for many years to come

-CAST For Kids has seen a growth spurt that is a direct result of YOU GUYS!  We are now firmly established in the east and are now also placing BR members as hosts in other parts of the country as well.  The people I've met, the places I've seen and the inspiration that has touched me, will probably never be topped in my lifetime.  It's understandable, I work with angels.  Literally.

-RI became VERY strongly represented here on BR.  Biggest little state there ever was!

-Got to be a guest on Lunkerville and BassFeed

-Quit cigarettes but grew a new addiction     WAKE BAITS!!!!! :)

-changed jobs at UPS, now I go in @ 2am and I'm out by 11.  I can fish 7 days/week if I choose to.

-Broke 2 rods catching first 2 wake bait fish.  Very rookie and VERY funny.  Had to be there :)

-Went swimming for my Revo

-Launched LowBudgetHookers.com

-Started making my own wake baits

-Created "The Dirk Files" some funny stuff

Below are links to the 2 full length videos from this yr.  I have 1 more coming.

Kickoff 08

Ghetto Bassin'

and to cap it off, "The Clubhouse" just got even more comfortable.  You folks don't see it but Glenn has gone absolutely nuts with upgrades.  He's been all out to keep this place the best there is on the technical end of it as well as the social.  We are looking to the future and what it may bring.  Knowing Glenn has it covered allows us, as staff, to get creative with suggestions.  This is an environment I thrive in.  Can't wait.

Quite a few highlights from this year...

-Lake Guntersville for the Road Trip w/ Alpster and all the other BassResource.com'ers. RiskKid had us over to his house for steaks that are BOMB!! Got to fish with RW, CJ, Masshole, Keri and Bob Lusk....Good times, good times.

-Trip to Vermont to see fiance's family. Discovered they had a little 30 acre jewel in their back yard. 120+ smallmouth in two days, biggest 5 went over 21lb.

- Went to the Chunk to fish with Muddy.  Need I say more?  LOL

- Traveled to RI to see Russ and lend a hand at a CAST event.  Gotta tell you if you have never been to one of these, go for the experience.  If the looks on those kids' faces doesnt move you, I really couldnt tell you what will.

- Trip to the Chesapeake catching bluefish ALL DAY LONG.  Sweet.

Numerous others, tired of typing.   ;D

This is the first year that I have taken fishing seriously and caught more and larger fish than I ever have. Both my PB's (LM and SM) were caught this year. I caught a 30" Northern a couple of weekends ago that is also my PB for that species.

I learned how to use a baitcaster.

I built my own spinnerbaits.

I also managed to catch 14 fish on a buzzbait when I previously had not caught a thing on them. The biggest being just under 5 lbs.

That was a cool story for me. I had been fishing my buzzbait and caught 4 fish and had 8 misses (typical). I felt a strike and started reeling, but it almost felt like a weed accept for the slight tugging. I knew it was a dink. As I am reeling it in through the weeds covering the shoreline, I see a wake chase it. I thought to myself (and maybe even said it out loud), that is a big fish! I quickly released the dink and cast back to the same area where the wake was. Wham! Fish on! That was the 4 lb 13 oz best on the buzzbait. Had my adrenaline pumping!

Fishing has been slow around here for me lately. I think the water temps have fallen into the upper 40's to low 50's around here.

Looking forward to maybe targeting Musky up in Wisconsin Saturday - the plans are not final yet...

The sweetest part of the year for me is finally gaining fishing respect from both my father-in-law and uncle-in-law (experienced bass fishermen). That sounds simple, but everyone in my wife's family knows just how tough that is.

I learn how to use a baitcaster with out getting a backlash ever other cast.

I caught a 3lber on a 6lb test using a popper fly. BTW that was my biggest bass ever on anything under 10lb test.

I caught my PB blue gill, it weight 1 1/2 lbs!

Bought my most expensive lure it was about 20 bucks; fish arrow cover jack.

Not that this has to do with fishing, but I knocked my grades but to a C-average to an A-average.

And I just today got my 9-week exam back and got 100% A+ (70/70)!

Well that pretty much covers it!

Hmmm . . . . there wasn't much to speak of really.  I broke my 19 year personal best slump.

I fished for white bass with my daughters, who are 22 and 19, and are not regular anglers.  They caught some fish and had a blast.  This was my favorite trip of the year.

I have had a so so year. I finished 3rd in my club classic. I didn't fish as much as I would have liked but I was surrounded by saltwater for most of the year. One thing I can say is I live in florida and I still have the best months of bass fishing ahead of me. Oh Yeah.

I got my first boat this year and have fished more in the last 3 month's than I typically did in an entire year.

I got to spend a lot of time with my brother fishing.

I caught my pb bass of an estimated 5.5 lbs.

I bought my first scale after that bass so I will know better next time.

I brought my wife fishing and watched her catch her first ever bass.

I think the best thing had to be the smile on her face when she caught a 4 lb 11 oz bass ( confirmed with the previously mention scale).

Priceless.

I had a terrific year as well, and most of my fishing was here in Texas on many of my favorite lakes. The fish seemed healthy and aggressive all year long which says alot for the management practices on these particular lakes.

Since I only threw jigs and/or soft plastics all year, it has been very enjoyable to say the least.

My favorite fishing experience this year would have to be fishing topwater for the first time. It only took one time and I was addicted.  ;D Other than that it would be fishing with my hubby and my kids, catching my first muskie and my first walleye.

My favorite fishing trip this year was a weekend with a bunch of kids that spent as much time wading, splashing, throwing rocks and swimming as anything else. They did enjoy catching, cleaning and frying up all of the catfish, brim and whites bass we caught but I'd say the extra curricular fun they had topped it off for them.

Great weekend
