Spinnerbaits - Weight

Featured Replies

Whats everyone using for spinnerbaits weight? I always used 3/8 but was thinking of going 1/2 to get a little extra distance. Also if you have used both do you need to burn it more if its heavier?

Hey midnightthrasher...I actually use 1/4 oz & 1/2 oz for the most part, 3/4 oz if I'm really fishing deep or during a really windy day.

As far as fishing faster? It really depends on your blade configuration. You can slow a lure down by attaching a bigger blade (rear) or make it faster by going smaller. Just be careful that you don't go too big or the lure will flip over on you.

Different blades will also have an affect on them as well. Colorado's will really slow a spinnerbait down, but it will also lift it up more. Willows will keep the lure down and the bigger it is the slower you can work it (slow roll technique). I switch out the split ring for a snap just for this purpose.

I can send a guide of what will work on different size baits if you want? Just send a PM and I'll get that over to you.

Hope this helps.

From 1/8 oz to 1 oz depending on how deep I am fishing and the cover.

3/4oz pretty much all the time except right after the spawn.

Same here. 3/4 oz double willow especially.

Three outta four say 3/4.

In other words, 3/4, near always. The lightest I throw with any regularity is 5/8, and I want those in a Willow / colorado. If you want a bait that shows a smaller profile, check out Northstars. I've been fishing his baits HARD this spring, and have had really excellent results.

I don´t think there´s a "rule of thumb" for spinnerbait weight, being said that, the weight I fish the most is 3/8 oz, followed closely by 1/4. Seldomly fish with heavier than 3/8.

1/2 most of the time...

The size profile difference between a 1/4 and 1/2oz spinnerbait may be enough for fish to notice during finicky moods, but a 3/8 and 1/2oz has no profile difference other than a smaller lead mold.

Better weight for casting means slightly bigger line can be used, faster drop, more thump, bigger blades, more bang for your buck - you're getting 0.125oz more lead/steel for the same price.

The majority of the time, I'm throwing a 3/8oz spinnerbait. I will go down to 1/8oz and all the way up to 1oz depending on the depth I'm wanting to fish.

Pond fishing I like a 3/8 oz.
