Southern Supper

Featured Replies

Sautéed squash, onions, and green peppers; Cucumbers with a dash of vinegar and pepper; Corn on the cob; A few pan fish, a little bit of fish roe, several pairs of frog legs, and a water moccasin. Everything but the onions were grown in my garden, caught on my hook, or killed by yours truly. There's just something about putting supper on the table that makes it taste a little better.

The best meal I ever had was from Western Sizzlin. It was just so good! I love southern cooking!

I'm originally from Tennessee and I can relate to that meal. But I will have to say I've never heard of anyone eating water moccasin. How do you prepare it? Do you deep fry it like rattlesnake?

squash corn and cukes im all about..... replace snake with some venison or maby a steak and now were talkin

The Moccasin was pretty good. I just fried it with the frog legs and roe, in an iron skillet with olive oil (no breading). I'd never heard of anyone eating it either, but the meat was so white I figured it had to be good. It was, there just wasn't enough of it!

Cracker special with frog legs, catfish, alligator, turtle, all fried up. Add grits, turnip greens, roasted corn on the cob, homemade biscuits or cornbread, made with sweet creamed corn. As much sweet tea as you can handle. Swamp cabbage when ever I can get it, whether it's boiled or fried.

Where's that Sizzlin' at? My parents met there working together, but then they said poop started rolling down hill and they vanished. I hear they're coming back though, so when I saw your post I got excited, haha.

It's funny you mention crawfish. When I was froggin', I came across a guy's crawfish traps. I didn't even pull them up to see if he had caught any. I simply prayed, "Lord, lead me not into temptation!" A few crawfish would have been a great appetizer. :D

My ball and chain is from Cali, don´t know if she is too "civilized" but she don´t understand that crave I have for good, ole fashioned, "exotic" :rolleyes: , southern delicacies. I don´t get it either, she´s hispanic and in theory we hispanics eat everything that crawls, runs, flies or swims. The only thing I definately don´t include in my menu are insects ( yuck ! ). So:

Gator ---> yummi !

Turtle ---> yummi !

Frog ---> yummi !

Armadillo ---> yummi !

Squirrel ---> yummi !

Rattlesnake ---> yummi !

"Ain't nothin' cain't be fried!"

"Cajun" and "Southern" are not necessarily the same.

Cajun is more about saltwater cuisine; Southern is

more about fried or smoked. Ribs, shoulders and butts

are what we consider "Q".

Tonight I made Red Beans & Rice with Andouille smoked

sausage served on a bed of collard greens.

I had the exact same thing last night. One of my favorite meals.

What, no fried okra or black-eyed peas?
