Wow, sort of like a black and white cookie... seems sort of crazy but then it ends up being perfect. Hopefully it performs well for you.

Matching colors and brands is nice, but I'm usually more worried about performance.

Some people would never do what you did though.

Interesting. The nine pounder that I caught in February, on a BPS Extreme rod, a 25 year-old Shakespeare spinning reel, and BPS Excel mono line, said: "Wow, I guess you didn't need to spend a lot of money to catch me after all...must not be the gear...but the presentation that got me..."

There have been many times that I've considered putting different rods and reels together but I have to admit that a Shimano riding on a Daiwa does seem to be sacrelige.

Also, I will admit I tried my Curado E7 saddled on an Ugly Stik here at home. Wasn't bad actually.

I suppose each person defines a purists differently. To me a purist is a fly fisherman wading the flats for bonefish or wading a stream for trout. Man against fish, no 50 mph boats, no electronics, no hi tech gear, no artificial scents. I exclude myself from the list of purist anglers as the fly rod does not come out often enough.

I'd rather have caught Goose's 9# fish on his gear , 9 # is definitely worth bragging about, but a 5# fish is only 5 pounds, hardly worth talking about.

I think that depends where you come from. A 5 pounder is almost half our state record, and even though I've caught a bunch of them, when I catch one I'm going to be bragging about it

It's all good. Some folks really get into the tackle aspect - all the way down to matching brands (and color schemes). Other folks just concentrate on what gets the job done. Either way, if it floats your boat then it's a good thing.

And I'd love to catch a 5 pounder right about now. I got a 3.6 pounder last night - biggest bass I've caught in almost a month. Dog days of August for sure...

bump. After fishing my new goodies today, here is a brief review.

Rod- 6'9" Daiwa Ballistic Medium Heavy fast action

Reel shimano curado 201e7

line- 40lb power pro braid

lure- 1/4-3/8 oz jigs

First impressions- When I pulled it out of the *** tube, I was kind of surprised at how thin it was. The blank diameter was closer to a medium action. The foam on the grips was a nice touch, it did not feel slick or cheap, even when wet. It feels real close to the septon grips on a shimano reel.

Usage-At first, I was just playing around with it not really knowing what to expect. It does have a nice feeling tip to it, it feels almost like the grey are between medium and medium heavy. It actually felt pretty good while casting and flipping. The sweet spot for this rod feels right at 3/8 ounce, while casting it will send that jig a country mile. However I would not recommend this rod for jigs at 1/2 ounce. It would probably feel a little over loaded, but I did not try it yet, so I could not give you an accurate answer. I think this rod would be a dynamite finnesse jig rod.

sensitivity- Felt really good, I was using braid, but it transmitted feeling pretty well. Even on a long cast I could still pick out every single branch and rock

overall, I would highly recommend this rod. It has quality guides (fuji) a machined reel nut which is nicely finished, and holds reels down pretty securely.

Unless the rod/reel are completely unsuitable for one another (like putting a spinning reel on a baitcasting rod), I don't see what difference it makes. My rods/reels have seldom, if ever, came from the same manufacturer.

I'm a purist, but not a snob. I love to go out and catch small trout on small streams with my 4 weight sage rod/reel combo. I'm also a fisherman that likes to catch steelhead on my 9 weight Redbone with a Okuma reel. I use an Green Okuma on a once broken-now repaired Cabelas fly rod for bass. I can look like a catalogue (but rarely do) but sometimes that collection of gear matches the river and season. The most important thing is having confidence in your gear, all your gear - not just rod and reel - and have a great time. Don't judge a man by his hat or his color coordination. I have caught most of my trout on a $2 glass True Temper fly rod I got from garage sale 20 years ago. I used to hate the guys that would show up with thousands of dollars worth of gear and a matching truck to boot. I felt better when I outfished them.

I think the purist thing is a thing of the past? The days when fly fisherman went to streams to fish dry flies ONLY does not exist in my world, but maybe I'm not a purist at all.

Elitists are swinging high modulus graphite rods with high tech floating or sinking line that is weighted forwarded and usually has some high tech low refraction indexed line as leader and saying how much harder it is doing it this way, blah blah bla

Fisherman don't care as long as they are on the water trying to catch fish and having fun, be it Daiwa, Zebco, oops I mean Quantum, Ugly stick ,etc.

I my friend am a fisherman, that has been through all stages , so go ahead mount that JDM reel unto its market foe and be HAPPY!
