Skeet Reese REVO - First Look
Because someone will pay it. Seriously though, I think it's going to be a limited run reel. I think it's really cool looking. Essentially a Premier with more bearings and a longer handle. Makes me want to get some Inshore handles for my Revo Ss.

WHICH to purchase Abu Garcia Cardinal 500/300 or Shimano Sahara
I have a Cardinal 502ALB. It's a great reel - a workhorse for me. I use mine for just about everything. If you like to fish crankaits on a spinning rod, it's a great reel for that. Compared to others in it's class, it is slower (fewer inches of line retrieved per turn). Tackle Tour reviewed this reel... Cardinal 502

Revo STX...Thanks Bass Resource! (plus snake story)
That post friggin' ROCKED! The two things I like most - snakes and Revos. Combine them, well, I'm there, man. Congrats on the Revo. I'm sure you'll like yours as much as I like mine. And on the released snake - me and the snake thank you.

Ripping Jerkbaits
Ooops, I said Shad Rap but I meant X-Rap. I've used these like cranks over grass beds. I get a lot of big pickerel on these worked this way, particularly in the spring. But I don't get many bass. I'm going to have to try burning them here shortly.

Ripping Jerkbaits
Anyone here find this a particularly successful technique? I read on the TackleTour forum that ripping jerkbaits, like the Lucky Craft Pointer DD, was very effective. I've never done this. I have simply applied a steady retrieve (with Rapala Shad Raps) and had some success. But I've never burned them. Anyone practice this and if so is it successful?

Abu Garcia and custom parts
I've been checking Abu's website frequently and the section about upgrades and customizations has been "under construction' for months. The JDM parts I post about last week piqued my interest even more. So I sent an email to Abu (notice my plug for BR )... I got the following response... If you are a Revo fan like me, please drop them a note and let them know your interest in some custom options for our reels.

Any recommendations on a spinning reel that can double as a saltwater reel
The Abu Garcia Cardinal 800 series would be perfect. The reels are practically all aluminum - body, sideplate, rotor, bail arms. No "graphite" here. In fact, there is a conspicuous lack of plastic on these reels - except the little cap that fits over the rear end. The reels have nicely forged spools, and unlike lesser Cardinals, the spare spool is as nice as the one that comes on the reel. The mainshaft is stainless steel and is coated with Abu's "Everslick" coating that feels like teflon. The spool is supported by two stacked ball bearings that eliminates a wobbly spool. The bail is oversized and the line roller is big and fat - very nice. The finish is a nice, super durable, matte crinkle finish. No bling here. The reels are very smooth and I cannot detect any unbalance anywhere. Abu has done a fantastic job on their newest Cardinals. Smooth, balanced, and extremely robust. My 800s have gotten some hard use - including stripers in saltwater. In fact, my brother-in-law has switched over to Cardinal 800s and uses them on his big boat for saltwater stripers. These reels get very hard use and look and perform as well today as they did when he got them. Cardinal 800 Series Cardinal 800 on You Tube

ardent reels
I saw my first one a couple of weeks ago. Roughest reel I ever turned a handle on.

advantages of spooling station?
The Berkley spooling station works great. It's just way convenient. The battery operated line stripper that comes with it sucks - throw it away.

Questions about Daiwa Zillion
Thanks for the replies, guys. Jhoffman, that's an Abu Garcia revo in my avatar. I am, indeed, sold on those. ;D Bassripper, I'd definately go with the 6.3:1 over the 7.1:1. The 6.3 will do what the 7.1 will just as well, and some things better.

Rick Clunn reel question
The BPS catalog says it has the Inertial Transfer Braking system. The schematic drawing on another reel with the same system describes it as a system that automatically applies the correct amount of "spool" pressure at the critical points during the cast. The schematic clearly shows a plate moving in and out against the spool as it rotates. However it works, it does not appear adjustable except by the exterior magnetic setting. Itis not the traditional centrifugal brake using little weights like on other reels.

Rick Clunn reel question
I don't think the Clunn reel has the centrifical brake (with weights). I think it has an inertia transfer system whereby a plate (I'll call it a clutch plate) is pushed out and rubs the spool to slow it down. I don't think this portion of the brake is adjustable. Only the magnetic part.

Bagley crankbaits - chipping paint
I got some earlier this year. I like them and they seem to have a nice action. They've produced a few fish for me. But the friggin' paint chips off with the slightest knock. Has anyone else experienced this? Can I spray these with a eurathane or something to toughen up the finish?

Questions about Daiwa Zillion
I'm wanting a new baitcaster and have been looking hard at Daiwas. I've looked at Fuegos, Sols and tonight I looked at Zillions. WOW, these are really sharp reels. From what I saw, very meticulously made. But one thing troubled me. I looked at 3 boxed reels (not display reels) and all of them showed resistance when cranking. I thought it might be a tight cast control knob and loosened that. I played with the drag, and that wasn't it. They just seemed very tight. The spools spun very freely in free-spool mode. But cranking just felt like the cast control knob was screwed down WAY tight. Since all three reels were this way, I can only assume that's the way it's supposed to be. Has anyone with Zillions experienced this? Does it loosen up as it breaks in? The reel I looked at was the one with the gold spool. -- Also, how have you found the drag? The specs show 8.8lbs of drag pressure. That doesn't SEEM like a lot and wonder how these reels will handle bigger fish like stripers. -- How do they handle lighter baits? I like fishing cranks and some of my favorites are 1/4 and 3/8 oz lures. -- Other than these issues, this is a gorgeous reel and I am seriously considering one.

revo stx vs. sx
I have 2 SXs. In fact, I've owned my SXs longer than any of my other Revos. They are very smooth and I've never had a moments trouble with them. One thing I've noticed, though, is that all of my Revos came virtually dry of oil. All of my other Abu reels seemed adequately lubircated, but I couldn't detect any oil at all on a few of my Revos. So, I've opened them all up and lubricated them and they are slick as glass. Since I have 8 Revos (and 2 EXT Pros and 3 C4s), I have been itching to try another brand. I've tried Shimano (1 Curado BSF, 2 Cardiffs, 1 Spirex, and 2 Shimano 200DHSVs). I've never been completely pleased with any Shimano reel. I have a Johnny Morris Elite baitcast reel which I really like. But I've been wanting something else. I went and looked at Daiwa Zillions tonight at BPS. I had the saleperson bring me three. They all seemed meticulously made, but every one of them had significant resistance when cranking the handle - like the cast control knob was tightened down way too far. The spool spun fine in free-spool mode, but cranking them took effort. Even after backing the cast control knob off, messing with the drag, etc, they were still too tight. Maybe they were just built tight and would "break in." But, to date, I haven't been as satisfied with any LP reel in the STX's price range as I have been with the STX and whole Revo line.

All I know is that you better get it fixed now before you get married.

Revo SX help
Is the drag backed off all the way? And did you lube the drag stack? Sometimes this can cause the handle to rotate and the spool to not go around. Otherwise, it sounds like you reassembled it incorrectly. Reelmech will be along shortly.

Revo S vs. SX
BTW, the Revo SC exclusively sold by Cabelas is a really, really good reel. I have two of these, too. Both are mounted on All Star American Classic 6'8" MH/F (AC SBR2). The SC is essentially an S with the magnetic brake of the SX. The SC perforns very well and and I can get phenominally long casts on my rod with baits 3/8 oz and up. It's priced between the SC and the SX. (I got mine when they first came out for $79 each ) Revo SC
