  1. I can't speak of the Garmin because I have never owned one, but the Eagle 320 is a great unit for the money. I had never used a D/F until recently, I bought a 320 and it is very easy to learn and set up and from what I can tell very accurate. Again I feel it is a great unit for the price.
  2. If I can get away from the house for a while, I am either going to head to Kill creek or Shawnee Mission on Saturday as well.
  3. KC Dave, if you have any luck at Cedar please share. I have never had any luck there, I think that I have only caught 3-4 fish maybe and none bigger than 1 pound, however I talked to a wildlife biologist who says he has seen 5-7 pounders in there.
  4. Well, I went out to Kill Creek on Saturday. Water temp was between 77 and 80, I caught about 12 fish, all but one were in submerged standing timber in 14-17 ft of water. The largest was 2# and the rest between 1 and 1 1/2#. The one exception was still in submerged timber but it was in about 10ft of water. Caught all of them on a Senko/Tiki stick except one on a red/white chatterbait.
  5. 5139, You can click on the members link above and see how many there are.
  6. That is what I thought, will have them ready to go.
  7. The rod that I was going to use for the topwater is my St Croix Med/fast, which I pretty much use as my all around rod, so if the topwater is not working I can quickly switch to crankbait with that rod. My C-rig rod is a 7-6 MH Team Daiwa rod with 50# power pro on it, I am trying to keep that one almost exlusively set up for C-Rig because this summer it is my goal to learn to fish it better, and if it is always rigged I don't have the excuse to not fish it. I don't have any Gitzits but I do have some Zoom Tubes and Zoom Centipedes.
  8. I am planning on going out tomorrow morning, and I am trying to get my tackle in order and get my rods setup before I go out. My problem is I think that I am over analyzing things too much and I can't get a good game plan organized. I am limited to only three rods due to space constraints so I plan on throwing a topwater bait early in the AM, I also plan on having a weightless Senko on a spinning rig and then I plan on taking my C-Rig set up as well. The water temp last time I was out, 2 weeks ago, was in the mid to upper 70s, stained water, with cattail along the bank and submerged standing timber in another area of the lake. Any suggestions?
  9. I saw an BassCenter a while back, Byron was explaining skipping with a baitcaster. He made it sound as though it was easier, meaning less backlashes, if you tighten the cast control knob up a little. You have to put a little more effort in the cast but it doesn't birdsnest as much. I can do it somedays and then others I can't seem to get it right. It just takes more practice.
  10. Hey kansasbassin, Have you been to Kill Creek lately? I was out there last Friday and there seemed to be a LOT of moss in those trees. I didn't make it over to really fish them effectively mainly because the topwater bite was pretty good over between the boat ramp and the fishing dock. I was in a pontoon kickboat and had a bass explode on some baitfish right at my feet, suprised me so much I nearly fell off my boat. . I am going to try to go back out this week and fish a frog or something in those trees over the top of the moss and hopefully catch up with a couple of big ones.
  11. It was an Eagle 480. I took it back since I only had a couple of days before the time limit to return them. I will probably go out and buy a new one of the same make and model. I am pretty sure that I had the transducer "mounted" correctly. I fish out of a pontoon kickboat so it was mounted on a PVC bracket that swings down in the water. I had the transducer mounted so it sat parallel to the bottom of the lake, and it was in auto mode, not simulation.
  12. I recently bought a D/F from Cabelas in the Bargain cave, which is the discontinued, returns, etc, area of Cabelas. Well I took it on the water Friday and there seemed to be a problem. The Chart would show a definite change in teh depth and contour of the bottom however the depth reading never changed. The depth would read 12 ft deep, then the chart would show a hump or a channel that was obviously much deeper or shallower, but the reading still said 12 ft. To me this seems like a problem, but I have very little experience with electronics so I don't know if I have something set wrong. I only have a few more days before I can't return it and need to know if I should take it back or if I have the settings wrong. Thanks.
  13. I think the only thing that really save me was the fact it was at Dick's sporting goods, I really don't like the selection or anything about that place for buying tackle or equipment. Now if it would have been Cabela's, then it would have been really ugly, being that it is pay day and all.
  14. I just had the most concrete evidence of the existence of the baitmonkey. I left work to go to lunch and get something to eat, then a thought crossed my mind that I needed to go to Dick's Sporting Goods, so I went. I pulled into a parking space and started to get out of the car and realized, I had no idea why I was there and what I had come to buy. I seriously sat there thinking why in the world am I here. I went in and bought some split rings and 3oz sinkers to make some lure retrievers for crankbaits, but it was a very surreal experience go there and then realizing that I had no purpose for being there :-? Just thought I share, the baitmonkey is experimenting with out of body experiences, so BEWARE.

    Another Kansan here, WELCOME ABOARD
  17. Ditto to RW, abel, and everyone else, but I will add one thing, pay attention when you are fishing. This was something that I had a hard time with when I first started. What I mean by that is when you catch a fish or get a bite, try to remember or make note of what you were doing, how deep the lure was, if it was near structure or what. If you do this you will start to see a pattern develope and in all likelihood will be able to catch fish anywhere on that body of water using that pattern. Now the pattern will change from day to day, even hour to hour but that is part of the mystique of fishing, figuring out where the fish are then what they want as far a presentation.
  18. That bites, but hey in a couple of weeks you won't have to worry about that anymore.
  19. Thanks, if the wind stays down, I am going to try to go out tonight.
  20. I usually get around this by having my own "fun money" account. Every paycheck I get a "small" amount goes into my account that I can use for whatever I feel like. We have a joint account that the bulk of our checks goes into for paying bills, groceries, etc. By the way my wife also has a fun money account, this way we can buy what we want without having to worry about what the other thinks of the purchase.
  21. I don't know if I would go that far : ;D. If I were you I would rig up a C-Rig or something you can feel the bottom well with. That way you can relate what your are feeling with your rod to what you are seeing on the D/F. Well the 480 can only be better the 320 and I am real pleased with mine so far. It's a whole new world out there now The only difference that I can find between the 2 is the 480 has 480 pixels and the 320 has 320 pixels, other than that they are basically the same unit. I have actually been using the emulator that I downloaded from the Eagle website, which is good for getting to know the buttons and what they do, but the graph is just an endless loop of the exact same thing. If the wind would ever quit blowing 20 miles an hour I would get it out on the water and see what it can do, hopefully later this week. KU, if I understand the owners manual correctly, with the Grayline feature, the wider the gray area on the bottom the harder the bottom is and a very thin gray line would indicate a softer bottom. Is that correct?
  22. KU, that is exactly what I thought I would do, even to the point of going out some night and not even taking rod with me, just so I could focus on the D/F. I actually ended up buying an Eagle 480. It was in the Bargain Cave. The package was opened but everything was still in original packaging, so I figured I would try it out and if it didn't work, I could return it within 30 days. I got it for $165, originally $199. They also had an Eagle 320c for $165 but it was just the unit, no transducer or wiring or anything.
  23. This is going to sound really weird, but I have always fished off the bank and never used electronics before. I bought a kickboat and recently bought a depth finder and was wondering how to use it. I know the basics but more toward the point, what should I be looking for on it? I assume depth changes and creek channels, anything else? :-[
  24. I always carry a Gerber utility tool, it has Fiskars scissors as well as a very sharp knife, trust me it is sharp :'(, that way I have a cutting tool as well as pliers for those stubborn crankbaits.
  25. Got me this weekend for about $200 for a new depth finder. :'(
