How true/straight should a boat run?
Because a picture is worth a thousand words and to ensure we are all on the same page - Perhaps post a few pics of the stern (back) of your boat on the trailer. Ensure that they include a clear view of your entire transom, your prop and the entire lower unit. Could be quite helpful A-Jay

Two Different Scenarios...What Would You Use?
During periods of low light - A frog around the pads & cattails. Rest of the day - two baits: A Texas rigged weightless stick worm (Senko) and a very light ( 3/16 or 1/4 oz) Medium size Texas rigged skirted craw or creature bait; worked painful slow along the bottom. A-Jay

Has the sport simply evolved, or have I gone backwards?
No doubt they catch a ton of fish and I fish them a ton. And while every fishery is different and given a choice, I'll almost always reach for a bait I don't have to replace after a few fish every time. A-Jay

what unpopular lure do you use?
@fishwizzard First - I change the hooks out to a quality after market model - Mustad, Gamaktsu or Owner. I like no feather here too. As for the secret - Perhaps think of the Subwalk as a 'Suspending Fluke with two trebles' and fish it that way. One way I fish it, is like a jerkbait but in warmer water situations where I might normally fish topwater. Fish still need to come 'up' to get it, just not 'all the way up'. Works as a 'follow-up' to a missed topwater strike now & then too. Of course you have to have it rigged & ready. I almost always use spinning gear (10 braid & a 10 lb mono leader - about 10 ft). Great to bomb casts and get the bait as far from the boat as I can - especially in this clear water. In colder water Sub mid 50's, I let the bait pause more. It has a great 'roll to a stop' action that I believe generates quite a few strikes. In plus mid 50 temps I fish this bait pretty fast. Still like a jerk bait but 'the pause' is like a millisecond. Short Jerk, reel up slack, - short jerk, reel up slack - but pretty fast. Pretty much constant reeling and jerking. I watch smallies appear behind the bait & track it for a ways the then Smash it. Trick is if you see one (or several) don't stop the bait, they love the chase & will lose interest if the bait doesn't keep moving - speeding it up can be a trigger too. Once shallow weeds emerge I'll throw & fish this over them - the magic is the the long cast and the fast retrieve. I will also add I've caught (and lost a few) to some hefty pike too. Confidence in a bait is a big deal and if you think this is a dud - well that's not going to help you BUT I get it. I can't catch a cold on a Glide bait and I have a box of them - everyone else is all about them. Me - well, not so much. Hope this helps. A-Jay

What makes your favorite type of fishing your favorite?
This is a tough one. One look in the rod locker indicates there's a lot of 'favorites.' While I do like to Chunk & Wind quite a bit, I'll say that my "favorite style of fishing" is putting the pieces together and solving the puzzle. The excitement comes from the anticipation & expectation of getting bit over & over. A-Jay

Fishing alone
Not to Hi-Jack the thread But - Get a GoPro (or other action video camera) & a Clamp mount - shoot a few second of video of yourself holding your catch. Then you can go back and select pictures out of the video - it's very easy. This allows you to go frame by frame - you can really dial it in - even action shots. Most every pic I post is done this way. I fish too long & hard not to take the few extra steps needed to get a decent pic of what I worked for. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. A-Jay

back pain
Most any Back pain is a bear and can really put a damper or worse a complete end to much of the things we love to do. Over the years I've had my share. The few times it was really bad I've been lucky enough to work myself back with a combination of rest & eventual 'physical therapy'. Sometimes it took a few weeks, other times several months. Been able to avoid anything that required surgical intervention. At 58, I still deal with some on & off, but rarely is it enough to keep me down for long. Keeping myself lean & strong (relative term) seems to really help. Especially now. @scaleface hope you're feeling better soon. A-Jay

Losing fish on Ned rig
OK - With no barb is cool. Just going to ensure you sink the steel you have well and keep the rod bent. Concentrating on 'pulling back into the fish' helps me out; especially when the bass gets close. Think about applying your pressure in the same direction that the tail is pointing. Might help you keep the rest of your bites buttoned up. A-Jay

Losing fish on Ned rig
If we can look at this in three parts, it may help. First, Casting - seems you're able to present the bait effectively. So that's good. Second, the hookset. Seems there may be some questions here as you're loosing fish. The size of the hook, the type & size of the line, the action of the rod, if the bait is rigged correctly, and finally the power / pressure & technique of the angler - all this contributes to whether or not the hookset is effective - meaning did you sink the steel past the barb ? Finally, playing & landing the fish. Some of the previous deals mentioned above play here too. Line type & size, rod length & action, and finally action of the angler during the 'fight'. Going "0" for 6 probably indicates that at least one (or more) of this needs to be changed / or at least modified. I'd re-evaluate your line choice, the type & size line you're using, the type & size jig head you're using and finally how you're playing / fighting the fish. Without knowing any of this or watching you 'lose' bass, I have no way to effectively offer advice. I know what works for me but you'd likely benefit the most by figuring this out through trial & error. That's how most of us bassheads 'get experience' - Good Luck A-Jay

Fishing alone
I fish by myself the vast majority of the time and I'm OK with it. Capturing (& then sharing) video makes it 'seem' - like I not really alone. A-Jay

Baitcasters at night...
Yup - anyone can cast when you can see . . . . And here's another example of how being an effective night basser improves ones skill. Now you can cast blindfolded. "Look Ma - No Eyes". A-Jay

Angler progression - Non-linear?
Yes ~ And when I fish in places that have a healthy population of both numbers & size, I often catch more & bigger bass. Places that don't - well, not so much. A-Jay
