  2. For me it's the full size soft body swimbaits; such an effective bait. I know & understand there's a definable drop off in bites but the quality can really be up there, still tossing Hudds, Mattlures, Osprey line through's and Trash Fish - I love all of that. Where the hate comes in revolves around All the Northern Pike (and some Muskie) here. First off, I must fish these baits with wire or they will virtually vanish. Then there's the shredding and the tail bite offs - It makes me crazy. Obviously doesn't happen every cast or even all the time (yes it does) but often enough that after several years of full on cursing at the lake - I've all but given up on the presentation here. Unless of course, I'm actually looking to target gator Pike & Muskie - then it's game on. Just have to accept the fact that I'll be donating whatever I tie on to a different type of tooth fairy. So there's always that. A-Jay

  5. I'm tying on a jig, and not taking it off until I'm confident in it. Any tips? Plenty of Fantastic advice offered here already and on any given day, almost any of the suggestions given work. My version includes looking at it from the stand point of the Predator & Prey relationship. Most anything a bass eats is probably trying really hard to avoid that scenario. So for 'the prey', doing anything that would draw attention to itself is undesirable and could lead to its demise. Rather than hopping & popping the bait, instead there is a time & place where sneaking a jig along every so gingerly works well. Try to move it while imagining that you’re actually attempting to toss your bait out there and get it back completely undetected - meaning without getting bit. Sounds kind of backwards I know but the jig is in the bass's world, and she knows it's there; without any extra action. You'll find yourself fishing spots slower and more thoroughly while at the same time affording your jig the time it needs to work it's magic. A-Jay

  11. Steady or Erratic Retrieve ? While each has a level of effectiveness, quite often what I do could be in the 'Both" category. I'd call it sort of Steadily Erratic or perhaps Erratically Steady. Sometimes it's all about cadence. And while that might mean what the bait's doing in a 5 foot stretch, other times it could be what the bait does over the entire length of a very long cast; especially for smallmouth in very clear water. I have come to believe that SMB often really want to 'chase' or 'stalk' a bait before eating it. Seems like part of the successful 'strike process' for me. So if during the cast or 'the process', if I'm not getting bit ( often indicated by follows) a change in 'retrieve' can turn them into biters. Conventional thought is to change baits or colors, but if what I was throwing was good enough to follow, often times changing the cadence is just as or more effective as a bait change. Of course all that goes out the window when 'inactive' bass are encountered. That lock jaws action is rarely overcome with any bait or cadence change. Either way there's almost always at least some type of pulse, pause, speed in flux or even a slight slow down of cadence. Just some type of hiccup along the way to offer a feeling of vulnerability. That's my story and I'm stick'in to it. A-Jay

  13. Some great baits already mentioned. Many of which have found a home in my own arsenal. One I didn't see listed is the 6th Sense PROVOKE 106 line of Jerkbaits. To dismiss this one could be a mistake. A-Jay https://www.6thsenselures.com/provoke-jerkbaits
  14. I launch & fish solo all the time. When fishing before the docks are in and places that have no dock, I use the a rope connected to the trailer strap & the the trailer-able D-Ring on the bow. Once the vessel is slowly released from the trailer, I use the Talons (with the remote) to stop & position the boat just off the trailer. A pair of boots in cold water or whatever footwear (or not) when it's warm and I can do this just about anywhere and in any conditions. This pic is the right before I put the boat back on the trailer - boat's sitting in 18 inches of water. A-Jay
  15. Not to get off track on this one but I find myself struggling with this a few times a season; especially during the transitional periods of post spawn to summer and then again from a summer pattern to fall . . . . . . Really going try to work on this one this season. A-Jay
  16. I absolutely do - A body of water near me has kicked my butt most days for 7 or 8 years. I could get a few early & late season (and at night in the summer) but after & before that, it was tough sledding. In fact my wife labeled it "The Dead Sea" . . . Hated it - but like a Freak, I kept going, determined to unlock the secret (whatever the heck that means). But - and this is a big but - The State opened up C & R bass here All Season - so I can fish at ice out. Game. Changer. Right off the bat, I started fishing areas I had not previously. First year out, I found the bass right away and have been able to stay with them most ALL SEASON ! Turns out, my approach & timing was off quite a bit. But it's like a whole new lake now & easily one of my favorites. Best part is two fold, it's close & no one else fishes it because 'the fishing's bad there'. Keep at it - you'll get it done. And when you do, your success will be most satisfying. A-Jay

  24. Same up here - warm (high 40's) and big fat rain past few days & nights - The valley out in the Back forty is at least 2 feet deep & looking pretty fishy ~ Might try stocking it with gobies, Asian carp & zebra mussels - we all know they'll end up in there anyway . . A-Jay
