What is a good jerkbait with a reasonable price
I have been "hearing" quite a bit about this bait - and from some very good sticks too. So I recently picked up couple and we'll get to see what all the 'Fuss' is about. I like the fact that they sink slowly on the pause. May not be that big of a factor in the spring but I'd expect next fall might see these getting stuck in more than a few stout SMB faces. A man can hope anyway. A-Jay

I saw that you picked that up in another thread. I have been basically blown away with this bait (especially the deep one) Please know I have a ton of LC baits and you'd have a hard time getting me to say that the KVD bait isn't better. Especially this fall. Good Luck with yours Blue. A-Jay

The Strike King KVD Jerkbait & the 6th Sense Provoke 106X are both very effective and around $10 bucks ~ The Deep versions of both are Killer Too A-Jay

Spinning Reel Shootout
Bought my wife a couple of Presidents in 2008 (I think) and they are both still going strong. (but do see limited duty) Since then I've owned 6 Pflueger Spinners, 2 each of the XT's, Supreme's & Supreme XT's - they see much more duty during the season. The anti reverse has failed on ALL of them. Couldn't take it any more ~ Went back to Shimano; Sustains & Stradic's. YMMV A-Jay

Maxima UltraGreen Users ?
Ultragreen is my favorite (non-Flouro) Nylon line ~ However, No line is perfect for everything. There's always a certain amount of give & take. When I need nylon, Ultragreen provides the best of that I want with the least of what I don't. It has Reasonable stretch, Great Knot & abrasion resistance, and is reasonably manageable when compared to other nylon lines I have experience with. Another Trade off is, where durability & longevity is concerned. Maxima has plenty of both, but with ALL nylon line I've used, they seem to have a certain & definite life span. So I like to change them out BEFORE they reach it. Waiting until after has often resulted in the sad face - . As Maxima Ultra Green is not the cheapest line, changing it out super often can get $$. When I'm making nylon line presentations is super heavy abrasive cover - where nicks & cuts in my line are inevitable and I know I'll be changing it out a bunch, the cost has to be considered. A-Jay

2015 Mercury 115 ProXS concern...
Although Outboards may be designed to run around near or at WOT and most all are - but doing the break in right is a pretty big deal. I've never heard of anyone having any type of an engine failure because they proceeded slowly with the break-in. However the reverse is not uncommon. Sort of like rehabbing an injury - never heard anyone say "well, I rehabbed that knee way too slow - now it's all jacked up" ? A-Jay This isn't a bad idea - I did it. Also a good time to check mounting hardware for tightness & torque. A-Jay

Most important piece of equipment
Before you even left - the accurate Float plan you leave with a responsible adult; that includes names, home & cell phone numbers of every one on the boat, where you are going, When you plan to return, where your are launching / recovering from and leaving your rig, description of your boat, trailer & tow vehicle including tag / registration numbers of boat, truck & trailer. As well as the phone numbers of who you want that person to call (USCG, DNR, Local Police / Fire Rescue) in the unlikely event you do not return as planned. This information can help rescue professionals find you - faster. And depending on the situation, could be kind of important. A-Jay

Identifying Grass
Agreeing with @Paul Roberts and @Team9nine here. And the First & last green of the season is almost always money. I'll add that at certain times of the year Cabbage Weed here is a great place to find some stout bass. (Can also be a Pike Magnet, but you gotta take the good with the bad I guess.) And although the pic below designates it as "The Best weeds" and it can be - it's often a little easier to fish. This becomes prime time for me when there are "patches" of this growing on a hard bottom with some open water between them - not too much, but just enough to allow me to pull along a swimbait, swim jig, chatterbait or zip a spinnerbait or shallow crank (usually squarebill) or the best case scenario - Lippless bait ripped along the edges - catching a bit here & there - and then ~ BOOM ! If the horizontal presentation isn't getting bit and a I need to go vertical - 90% of the time it's one of these A-Jay

Moderate fast for jigs
I'd been looking for a new / longer jig rod a while back. So during the ST Croix Rage Rod Bargain room sale I picked up the 7'6" MHMF ~ Perfect for jigs, Pitching & Lite Flippin. Love putting a big bend in it - especially with braid. A-Jay

Motor Rebuild
This might apply. Mercury Seeks To Settle Class Action Suit Mercury Seeks To Settle Class Action Suit Outboard engine manufacturer Mercury Marine has proposed to settle a class action lawsuit filed against it in spring 2003 by owners of 2.5- and 3.0-liter OptiMax engines from model years 2000, 2001 and 2002, reported Steve Fleming, Mercury Marine director of communications, in an interview yesterday. 6/15/2004 -- FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Outboard engine manufacturer Mercury Marine has proposed to settle a class action lawsuit filed against it in spring 2003 by owners of 2.5- and 3.0-liter OptiMax engines from model years 2000, 2001 and 2002, reported Steve Fleming, Mercury Marine director of communications, in an interview yesterday. Those who filed the suit - Lazo vs. Mercury - allege that these engines contain fuel injection and power head component defects, according to a legal notice Mercury Marine plans to post in Field & Stream magazine next month. Through the proposed settlement, "settlement class members" may be eligible for an extended warranty on the direct fuel injection and power head components. Those members who paid for repairs of the components and/or whose engines required three or more warranty repairs of the components may be eligible for rebates on the purchase of Mercury and Quicksilver parts and accessories and on the purchase of a new OptiMax engine, the legal notice stated. The proposed settlement is not an admission of guilt on the part of Mercury, Fleming said. "We feel that Optimax has performed spectacularly in recent years, and will be in our product line for years to come," commented Fleming. "It performed well as a new product, though not as well during the years in question. And it has performed extremely well since then." A settlement hearing is scheduled to take place at the Miami-Dade County Courthouse in Miami, Fla. on September 9 at 10:30 am. During the hearing, it will be determined: "1. whether the proposed settlement of these actions is fair, reasonable, and adequate; 2. whether a final judgment should be entered dismissing the litigation on the merits as to the manufacturers of the OptiMax engines; and 3. whether applications to be made by class counsel for payment of fees and reimbursement of expenses and an incentive fee award to plaintiffs should be approved by the court," according to the legal notice. Fleming said Mercury expects the proposed settlement to be approved. The company chose not to comment on the monetary value of the settlement nor the number of engine owners involved in the lawsuit. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_123/mercury_lawsuit.html MERCURY SERVICE BULLETIN #2001-01 2000 115hp through 150hp 2.5L Optimax outboards & 2001 135hp through 225hp 2.5L & 3.0L Optimax outboards. Some direct air injectors could fail: internal part could break, resulting in hard starting, poor engine operation & possibly internal engine damage. Engines that were reworked will be marked w/ blue dot near/on serial number label or near direct injector. Injector may also have a blue plastic part. Mercury will install upgraded injectors no charge & add 3 mos to factory warranty if engines were registered before 2/1/01. Manufacturer set up special "Direct Injector Assistance Team" to handle complaints, 800-309-4743. Manufacturer sent notices to all registered owners. A-Jay

Hey Cranking guys...
Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ I'll admit that I really like to Chunk & Wind, so cranking is right up my alley. But I also like to catch fish so when cranking isn't getting it done it's time to switch it up. "When" to do this for me is mostly predicated on where I think the bass are at. They may be too deep or buried up inside of heavy vegetation. Perhaps the past & / or current water temps are such that something other than a horizontal presentation (think vertical) could get more or bigger bites. Clearly cranking works. But just as sure as nothing works all the time, so are the number of alterative methods. Fun part is being successful in choosing the right one. A-Jay

Nicely stated. My subscription ran out a while back, but over the years I had it, I learned quite a bit. Don't really see the need now as the information highway seems to have replaced it. btw - I see that the new year has you decreasing your post lengths - Congrats right there A-Jay
