Try throwing a black spinnerbait, any type of rattle trap, crankbaits. Anthing that will cause a reaction strike.

If you know nothing about this lake find out how the current works in this lake and fish deep points on the side that the current is coming across. The current will bring bait fish over the structure where the bass will be waiting for an easy meal. Check your topo maps and find the structure that way before you go out to the lake so you can determine where you are going to start fishing. Another thing you may want to do is prefish the lake before you fish in any tournament. When you are out fishing the points try throwing a crankbait or a jig anything that will cuase a reaction strike. That is a good way to search for the bass. Good Luck in your tournament.

I would have to say that my dad got me into fishing when I was really young and I'm glad he did! Up until a few years ago I hadn't really fished much. But now i fish almost every day I have off and I now have my own boat and watch as many instructional videos as possible. I am always willing to learn from anyone. With-in the last couple of months since I have been a member here I have learned more about bass fishing then I had ever dreamed. Now I know what to throw in most situations and I am usually successful IMO. Maybe not as successful as other anglers but I give it hell everytime I am fishing. I have to thank this site for teaching me what I know now. And thank you to everyone who has ever helped me out on this site. Like I always say this site is the best on the net!!!! -Nitro

I disagree with cutting the line at the hook. If you cannot get the hook out then I would keep the fish. I caught a bas sthe other day at night and when i got the fish in I saw that there was a hook hanging out the pee hole. I took my pliers and removed the hook and when I did about 10 yards of fishing line came out and it had 3 split shot weights attched to it. The hook that i pulled out was a small hook and if you leave a large hook in the fish I beleive it will kill the fish in the long run. JMO

I actaully just started fishing jigs this year. But the trailer of choice for me has been the strike king rage tail craw. They work great they move alot of water and they have a great action if you decide to swim them.

Welcome!!!! One thing you are going to want to do when trying to set the hook with these baits is not to let it sit for too long in the fish's mouth. Try to let it sit only about 1-2 secs. before setting the hook. When you do set the hook reel up tighten your line and slam her back!!! I usually hook up every time. although I have been missing some here lately. Good Luck to You!!!

It looks to me that the dotted line indentifies the area of shallow water. Most maps have a very light colored blue to show shallow water however I see that this map is not a color map so mot likely then not this is showing the shallows. I would stay away from that area when up on plane on this lake (if you're in a boat) but I woud try to get a more up to date map then this one shown. Once you get to the lake you could go up against the area that is dotted and just look so you know for sure what it is. However I wish you good luck on this new lake!!!

In most lakes that have creeks running into it there will be a channel that carries the water. Once you find the channel follow it out to about 10 ft of water and fish that area. I agree with LBH when he says to fish the warmer water between 8-15ft. I read a while ago that there was a study done with a large tank, where they had a cool water aeretor on one side keeping the water very cold and a hot water aeretor on the other side just to find out what the bass like temp wise. They found that most of the bass stayed toward the side that had a water temp between 80-83 degrees. 8-)

No that is how are club works. It is not a HUGE club with a bunch of rude guys who only care about money. Instead we are a local club that fishes in just a few different bodies of water, we have no reason to throw a dead fish back.... why throw a dead fish out or even not have your limit of fish for a tournament?? :question :question

Before every tournament I get into a mindset that my fiance says is VERY strange. LOL But I will take EVERYTHING out of my boat. I will then clean my boat inside and out. Once I have cleaned out the boat and cleaned it up I will take ALL of my tackle and rods/reels into my house. I will then rearrange all of my tackle and lures around to make sure they will be ready for the givin' body of water I am fishing. Once all the lures are arraged I will then restring all of my poles and grease the reels and make sure everything is ready. Once the boat is dry I will then wax the boat so it looks good, wash and wax the truck so my whole rig looks nice and then I will start to put all of my equipment back into the boat. That is how I work and get through the fever of the upcoming tournaments. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I took my ole lady out yesterday and all she wanted to do was stick her feet in the water i could hardly get her to throw a lure!!! Must be nice!!! ;D ;D

I'm always out for that ONE big. unfortunatley I have yet to find her this year.... :'( :'( But I'm always out to have fun. If you don't have fun when you're fishing then there is no point in going anymore. I try to set goals for myself on every fishing trip. I try to fish with my lures I have zero confidence in and throw them until I can't stand it anymore and then I will pick up another lure I have good confidence in. And once I get a bite and miss I will grab the other bait (Zero confidence bait) and throw it in the same spot I just got the bite and hope that I will finally get a strike. I think you learn more on every trip if you set a goal for the day. If you do not succeed don't feel bad because I know I have been out many times and not reached my goals. But it is the times where I do reach my goals and that makes every trip worth it. At least it works for me and I hope someone else can use what I do to help them. My main problem is that I have yet to catch the "one" this year but..... the year ain't over yet!!!!

Sounds like you had a great place to fish. I have never fished that area but it looks very nice. BTW Ron and Jay are very knowledgeable about many of the areas in NoVa. Its always great to see a dad taking his kid out!!!
