  1. Yeh nothing under 7' is gonna work for you. I don't think there is any rod under 7' that can handle 2oz lures. Good luck though. Maybe strap it to the top of your car.....! 8-)
  2. You give skeet,Ike, and vandam a Barbie pole and they will out fish most anglers. I know some people think it's all about the gear you use but really it's what's between the ears. I don know how many seminars I have been to where the top anglers say that fishing is 95% mental. Fishing gear are just tools it's up to the fisherman to determine which one works best in certain situataions. 8-)
  3. These kinds of posts always get me. I always wonder why someone would buy a rod due to what other people advise. Your going to get ten different answers and opinions from ten different people. The best thing for you to do is go to your local tackle shop and feel all the rods on your list. Get the one that YOU feel good about not what other people feel good about. There is on thing that I learned is just because something works for others doesn't mean it will work for you. Make up your own mind and don't let others do it for. JMO 8-)
  4. I just got a dobyns 766 savvy rod. I think this would be perfect for what your looking for and it's right in the middle of your price range.
  5. You will be alright with 12lb floro if your fishing light to little cover say in open water situations dragging a light football or spider jig. But anything else atleast 17lb floro. This year I have been trying braid with leaders and the sensitivity is way better. I am gonna give it a full season before I make the decision to keep fishing it or not.
  6. Also I don't see any hollow belly swimbaits. Also you might want to stock up a few doubles cause sometimes you have days where you lose alot of lures. 8-)
  7. Congrats on the purchase. I just ordered my 8th dobyns rod yesterday. I have 5 champs and 2 extremes. I have a 702dxc that I have paired with the core 50 for all my finesse techniques. Also have the 784dxml which is the finest jig rod on the market. I am not sponsored by dobyns but have talked to Gary and his pro staff on numerous occasions and let me tell you Gary is crazy picky about rods and would not release anything he wouldn't stand by 100%. The only ones I have not tried are the savvy series and just ordered a 766 flipping stick. So will post a review after I put some time in with it. Again congrats on buying such a great rod and you will not be dissapointed when you get it on the water. 8-)
  8. I'd go with the chronarch d. I have one that I pitch and flip with and I agree with b-fly. The reel feels more solid than the core 100mg.
  9. Shimano hands down. I did get a new model premier to try and have to say I was impressed, but it's still not in the league as the core 50...! 8-)
  10. Like brokeju said don't forget to consider a dobyns rod. I also use a 702dx but I prefer a casting rod for shakey heads. Give one a try I'm sure you will like it.
  11. Dobyns champion extreme 784ML...! This is the best jig rod I've ever used hands down. It is mike long signature jig rod. It took me a second to get used to the extra length but now I couldn't go back to a shorter rod. The extra length really helps pick up extra line and the tip is really sensative. 8-)
  12. Revenge flipping and football heads for me. I love there durable paint jobs and the way the skirts match the heads perfectly. Also the hooks are good. 8-)
  13. I use revenge...! 8-)
  14. I use a chronarch 100d7. I think a higher gear ratio is key and I like the way the cores palm but I use the chronarch for flipping cause it has the brass gears not aluminum.
  15. I have a mint one I will sell you for $175 shipped. It has cermaic bearing upgrade and also carbonex drag. I have the box and docs. Let me know and I can send you some pics.
  16. If you want to get bigger fish I personally believe you have to go atleast 6 inches. If you go any smaller you might as well just be fishing a crank bait. Even on a 6 inch bait you will be surprised how many 2-3lb fish you will catch. Right now you can find plenty of good deals on swimbaits. You just have to look around. 8-)
  17. GAY.....! It's called angler of the year but should be called angler of the week. 8-) > :(
  18. Well the last couple years I dedicated to swimbaits and trying to incorporate them into the arsenal. Well it put a damper on my productivity and sometimes I think I tried to push the bite to hard. So this year I told myself to just go out there with an open mind and try to adjust to the situations that are presented to me. Well I have to say that I have been fishing alot better. So some of my technique goals were fishing the dropshot more and also learning to punch the mats. Well I have had some of my best days with these techniques. I think now my goal will be to keep a better fishing journal. I think anyone that is serious about fishing should always have goals and want to learn new techniques. If you keep fishing the same way ur gonna keep having the results and catching the same fish. Try not to fish yesterdays bite.
  19. The dobyns helping Powell thing is old news. I have a question though because I do think that the gen1 dobyns feel similar to Powell rods but the gen2 are lighter and the actions are a little different than the first. So which ones were u comparing? I pesonally think that the new dobyns rods are way better than the Powell rods. And for the record i do own both brands. 8-)
  20. I'm sorry but from my experience the curado and Tierra is comparing apples to oranges. They might be in the same price range but from a value stand point it's hard to beat the curado. I think the curado is actually good competition for the daiwa zillion line up and the curado is about 100 bucks cheaper. Get the curado u won't be dissapointed. 8-)
  21. Compared to other swimbait makers matts prices are a STEAL.....! When u buy a handcrafted bait that has so much work and research and developement put into it ur not paying for just the materials. Ur paying for all the hardwork put into it. I always thought that matts prices been really reasonable. I understand that some people say that $50 for a bait is just outrageous. But in the swimbait market for a custom bait like matts that is actually cheap. Some baits go for $200+. Swimbaiting isn't for everyone but for those that are into it know that matt just made a big statement with the quality and price of his new hard bass. So I have to give credit where credit is due and give matt a big WELL DONE.!!! 8-)
  22. Dobyns rods are my favorite rods out there. I own 5 of them and 2 of them are the gen2 champion extremes which are by far my favorites. The 2nd generation are definately better than the first but I never had an issue with them. There is a rod in there lineup for everything and the warranty is second to none. If u could tell me what applications u are thinking of getting one for I might be able to help u with ur decision.
