The thing with these cables are they are digital signals they either work or they don't work, it's not a quality thing. Buy the cheapest you can and you'll be fine.

sounds like the jack is broken off in the ipod, you can rewire your headphones so that they play mono and not stereo, just split the one wire that does work into two and it should play fine.
