  1. One of the special touches that Art Pasley does for the hosts at CAST is he sends out a pic of the month. I will be posting these here each month, just to keep the CAST awareness going. Below is the quote from the email from Art. Welcome to Stockton Missouri. This was a first time C.A.S.T. event in Stockton and what a day it was. It took several days for me to finally decide that my friend Zack was the perfect picture of what your efforts provide to your participants. It took that long because the smile and expression on his face was the same with everyone there that day. Not just the kids but everyone. Tammy Huffman and the Staff from the Lake Stockton U.S Army Corp of Engineers, along with volunteers from the area provided a wonderful opportunity for a very special group of kids from the surrounding area. The day was magical. I saw kids arrive with high hopes of spending the day fishing and watched as they returned to shore with even bigger smiles and their new Boat Captain friends. I'm not sure who had more fun that day, but I know I really enjoyed being there myself.
  2. Dirk gave me a couple whoopings this summer, I'm talking like 15-2, 14-4,....real spankings. I would have to claim an injury,....my feelings were hurt, lol I've seen a couple of good ones offshore. The worst was when a team of guys were leadering a blue shark. Pulling the line in by hand (leadering) they created a few coils on the floor. The angler stepped into one and then the shark got loose from the leaderman on the side of the boat (bad wrap). The coil tightened around the ankle of the angler, slicing clear to the bone, ligaments and all, in a complete 360 around the ankle. He was airlifted and the rumor has it that he will never use the ankle again (hobbled) Another incident on the BXRL tour, a spearfish launched into the boat, impaling the female angler through the breast. The spilled silicone supposedly created a clotting scenario, subsequently saving her life. Another guy took the bill straight through the calf muscle. No fun.
  3. Matt nailed it. Fish with a central strip of dark flesh are typically "migratory" fish. The dark strip is actually bloodshot meat where the blood transports oxygen for long distance travel, thus the gamy flavor For example, a dark strip is seen in bluefish, which are migratory fish, but tautog are residential bottom fish with white flaky flesh The same is true of birds, where woodcock that migrate from Maine to Louisiana have dark reddish-brown flesh but grouse and pheasants are stay-at-home birds with white flesh, like the flesh of a domestic chicken. Roger Cool info guys, thanks. For all you Bluefish eaters,...you're nuts!! ;D Here in RI, the key is a mayonaisse bath before grilling, but still,.....NO THANKS! I learned the hard way when I was younger that cooked "wrong", you spend hours sitting on the toilet. Not a chance I'll ever take again, not with a bay full of Stripers to eat
  4. Fluking for Picks in the spring is a sure fire way to cure cabin fever. We spend 1/2 the time finding a few of the early season bass and when that window closes (warm parts of the day), we specifically target the picks. A fun way to say,....."We're baaaaack"
  5. I aspire to think like this.
  6. If you don't do it often, it's probably not worth investing in the fryer. (there is also a high fire hazard if not educated or experienced) You can buy aluminum pans made specifically for roasting a Turkey. (Like $2) You basically just cook it in the oven. You can flavor the skin with salt/pepper/garlick powder, or whatever you like. The recipes on line can show you the steps, preparation is the main thing, defrosting, cleaning, optional salt baths, etc. Cooking time varies depending on whether it is stuffed or not. Here is where the big difference can be made,....the stuffing. Any favorite stuffing recipe works. Personally, in mine, I like to have chopped Linguica, onion, celery and a few other flavorings.
  7. Deep fry that bad boy!!
  8. You're gonna fit in well here Nick!! ;D Way to hit 'em Syfer!!
  9. Awesome Nick!! Welcome to the family.
  10. You are relentless. Very admirable catching.
  11. Sloemoe- Often, like with birds, it is the choice of fish that can make all the difference. "Sole" types of fish (haddock, flounder etc,) are the least fishy. Light white meat is the ticket. Striper is by far, my favorite.
  12. If the people know that you know the lake and you tell them the fishing sucks and then they go slay them,......you just got a new boat at your lake for the next few weeks. They think the lake was made for them if they did better than the guy they look up to. I like to say,..."Well the bite is good but this lake doesn't hold the fish it used to" (truth) granted, it still has more and bigger fish than anywhere else in the state,....but you didn't lie.
  13. Lightweights or not, DO NOT use a pedestal. You'll see how tippy it is even without them. WITH them,.....you're goin' swimmin'
  14. Absolutely. Catt's suggestion is tried and true and the most cost effective (how I did mine) but sandblasting is the way to go if you want the very best results. It gets EVERYTHING off. After a good prep wash, it leaves the metal ready to accept a good metal etching primer also. If you use a stripper, make sure it is ok to use it on aluminum.
  15. This is a link a member provided in the thread about my conversion, hope it helps. http://www.myjonboat.com/gerry.htm In my opinion, this is a fantastic layout for a small "V". I Never fished it but it looks extremely functional and well thought out. Bowtech has a thread running right now, "My $125 boat". This one incorporates a different layout, a full open floored deck (lots of freedom to move) Both are done very nicely and offer you 2 completely different lay outs according to your needs. The biggest thing you'll notice with both of these is how neat the work is. TAKE YOUR TIME and do it right like these guys, you won't regret it. Please take lots of pics so we can use it later as a refferal for guys looking to do something similar.
  16. I was looking for some more free education, lol. I wasn't sure if it was a cajun word for recipe or something, like "how y'all are",lol. Recipe does sound good though. I had duck once, way too dark and oily for me. I was told Goose was worse. True? I understand it's all in how you cook it (like Bluefish) but in general, is it a strong meat? And,...can you BUY Goose or is it strictly a hunting thing?
  17. What's the Receipt for, in case you don't like it and want to return it?
  18. Yup, I had to call Glenn yesterday, got my monthly dose of country. I'll pm him next time ;D
  19. I was on a route Tues, first stop is walmart. People in the parking lot were waiting for the UPS truck because they know we had the wii's on board. Each walmart (in ri anyway) gets 12 boxes (3units/box I think) every day till xmas.
  20. no new set up, Glenn is working in there Hold tight, all will be back to normal soon. Thanks folks.
  21. That sucks FFD. Hopefully you are a believer in Karma. This week, we had a guy following a driver, stealing the packages he left on the door steps. Cops bagged him, they went to the house and there were 21 other stolen packages,....all were under his tree. (most would assume it's an addict looking for something to fence real quick) And a MERRY CHRISTMAS to you too!!! I say we decorate the hell out of this thread for Fishfordollars I'll start, I got the lights and a Santa for the roof!!
  22. Are you crazy? He resides at the LBH clubhouse! The set up is actually the top of a 7wt fly rod and an old Shimano uls mounted with electrical tape and 2 Bolla wine corks. Low Budget to the bone,..........Robert, bet you don't have one of these!! ;D
  23. I have 2 pairs of the Fives, love them. This model was specifically designed for "narrow framed" faces.
  24. Sure does I now have a thing my mom gave me last yr though, for putting them in regular washing machine. It's a plastic framework thing that the cap goes in. Keeps it from getting the bill bent up in the wash
