  1. In no particular order, I use these the most: Yamamoto DT Hula Grub Yamamoto Fat Ika Yamamoto Senko Zoom Trick and Finesse Worm Zoom Lizard RI Sweet Beaver Berkley Pit Boss SK Rage Craw SK Rage Menace Keitech Fat
  2. for a fish only tank, even marine, if you dump a bit of money into it you can get by with an hr of maintenance a month if you do not overfeed and not overstock the aquarium and only use the lights for viewing. you may need to wipe the glass down every week or so with a long handled brush or magnetic scraper depending on how much light it gets. adding coral to marine and plants to fresh water is where you have to start paying more attention and spending more time and money. auto top off systems will keep evaporation in check with a reservoir. salt doesnt evaporate so you only need to mix when doing a water change - siphon X% of tank water, replace with clean water from a reservoir (takes up room) that has been mixed with salt several hrs before. you can keep it bucketless by using a "water python" hose that uses a running sink create the siphon. this wastes a bit of water and puts salt water in your house's pipes. i run fresh water after im done for a few mins and pray it doesnt corrode anything ;). i pump the newly mixed salt water from a brute trash can into the aquarium with a $50 pump/powerhead. for marine tanks the bacteria on "live" rock, a good skimmer and water changes will do the filtration. a bit of patience and using quality dry rock will keep it pest free and way less expensive. let me know if you ever decide to put something together.
  3. They used to be very expensive in the aquarium hobby years ago but then became a pest in FL. Glad they are good to eat! Any good baked or fried? Found a good Chinese place last night near the house. Good Chinese is hard to find in my area. Had the Manchurian Beef (mushrooms, onions, brown sauce).
  4. i like MH XF Loomis spinnning rods (803 NRX or GLX) for these types of jigs. 20lb braid or 8lb FC (light cover). the st croix avid or LE spinning 6'8" M/XF is great too. Fishes almost as powerful as a Loomis MH. for light cover up to 1/4oz plus plastic, the 852s is a blast.
  5. sold my new 51e just after christmas for $200 shipped. i think my used 51e sold for about $160 shipped a few months earlier.
  6. i like 7.x:1 as an "all rounder" regardless of spool size but yes a smaller spool will have less IPT at same ratio. 6.1 to me would be for med to smaller deep cranks but many like that speed as an all around. harper's ferry to riverbend (shallow) and chainbridge to pointlookout on the potomac. occoquan reservoir. brunswick to point of rocks is fun for small mouth but too shallow at many parts for a bass boat. get on google earth and zoom in on the lakes around your area. feel free to PM me about spots. for a wkend trip check out briery creek, smith mountain, kerr reservoir.
  7. Curados are not overkill. They are a little hard to tame but will reward you afterwards. i think you are wise in getting quality gear for your first BC combo. If you are like me, it will make the experience significantly better. Curados are awesome for the price. Id get the 71 (1s are left) unless you really need the extra line capacity of the 201. best palming reel i have fished. palms better than the smaller and more expensive aldebaran in my hands. Learn about gear ratios if you havent already before you purchase. HG (7.x:1), XG (8.x:1) ect. I myself like around 7:1 for an all around ratio on most smaller reels. M or MH would depend on lure weight and amount and type of cover or grass. In cover, baits on the lower end of the lure weight rating of MH would probably work. In open water, you could fish the upper end of a M. If i had 2 rods, id have a M spinning and MH BC. ive not fished the mojo but have a bunch of avids. i dont think you can go wrong with the mojo. oh - and try some jigs and soft plastics!
  8. I'd love to have that rod. I had a 6'9"MLXF Avid that I sold with the intention of getting the LE version. Would you agree though that ML St. Croix rods lack a bit of power to be versatile? I love them for sweep sets and thinner hooks but they are not great for hard hook sets with your typical EWG hook IMO. Im basing this on a LE 6'6" ML/F, Avid 6'9"ML/XF and Avid 6'3" ML/XF.
  9. I have a NRX 852s and a 2016 LE Med/Fast. The Legend Elite is a nicer build but the 852s is a quiver killer. Light, comfortable and the most sensitive rod i have ever fished. It sits in between a LE 6'8"MXF and a Avid 6'9"MLXF in terms of power. Very versatile rod IMO. I use it mostly for DS, shakey, weightless plastics, t-rig/jigs up to 1/4oz plus plastic. Not a bad rod for moving baits either. Its not super fast and has a great tip. Its perfect for a 4" senko but can handle a 5" just fine. Its expensive. There have been some 25% off sales at a few online retailers lately. That puts them at GLX price or lower. I cant pay $500+ for this rod but would if I had no choice! I know an online retailer that always has 20% off of GLX and NRX. PM me if interested but be patient and look for 25-30% if you end up wanting a Loomis. They have a replacement plan similar to St. Croix if you break the rod. Unlike St. Croix, they ship first and you ship the rod back in the same tube. They do not have an upgrade option like St. Croix does though. A lot of love for the new GLX online but i have not tried one.
  10. its good. people even name themselves after this bait.

  12. I generally use 7.x:1 for all around use, 8.x:1 for jigs/plastics, less than 7:1 for high resistance and med-deep cranks.
  13. there have been some 25% sales recently.
  14. a 25% sale will put it under NRX retail 853 JWR should be the only one needed. did NRX come out in the fly fishing lineup before bass?
  15. Surprised there wasnt a thread already. Any fans? RIP
  16. carpet surfing is a common sport practiced by many aquarium fish, some species more than others. a screen top will keep jumpers inside. a glass top will do the same and also keep evaporation down. a glass top will reduce PAR a bit (especially when not clean) so be mindful of that if keep light loving coral/anemones/clams.
  17. ive got a yellowhead jawfish (you need one), flasher wrasse, two O. clowns, pistol shrimp/goby, firefish, fire shrimp and a tail spot blenny currently.
  18. The Metanium palms bigger than the Aldebaran and does not hold much more line. Especially the cheaper JDM version with a shallow spool (all other things exactly the same i believe). The Metanium is still very comfortable to palm in my hands. I have all fingers north of the trigger when palming. The Metanium MGL is the best casting reel I have fished. This includes older Zillions, Met 13, Met DC, Aldebaran 2015 and 2009 51 Mg7, Core 51 Mg7, Curado 51E and 201E7, Curado 71. More expensive options like the Antares (heavy), Conquest (round) and Steez may cast as well or better, i have never fished them. The 2015 Aldebaran is the smallest and lightest reel I have used by far. Noticeable weight difference between it and a Magnesium Core 51 or Metanium MGL. Casts great. 2 bearings in each knob (Met MGL does too) but i swap the knobs for the larger MET 13 XG ones. It has the small knobs like the ones on the Curado 71. On a lightweight and balanced rod like the NRX 842 (fast action) or NRX 852 (XF) it makes a hard combo to put down. Both the 842 and 852 lack a bit of power to be ideal for pitching typical skirted jigs 3/8oz plus plastic and greater to cover IMO. Better suited for 3/16oz jigs and t-rig, shakey jigs, weightless plastics, small paddletails, small squarebills. Perfect for a 4" senko and beginning to feel light with a 5" senko but totally doable if that helps. For an all around jig rod for pitching id look at something sensitive, MH, XF or maybe F. some rods I have never used like the high end Kistlers (sensitive), Dobyns (balanced) and some of the high end Megabass rods where value starts to diminish rapidly might be worth some research. Different MB lines vary greatly in sensitivity, do your homework if you go this route. My MB experience is only with the XX line. Great sensitivity but not near NRX territory. Awesome tapers for moving baits.
  19. that budget will get you whatever you want. for jigs and plastics i like a very sensitive rod and usually spend the most on rods for those techniques. you could go custom and get whatever you want. there are about 5 or so blank manufacturers that are mentioned frequently, i hope someone will chime in. if you buy prebuilt, id check out the following combos. i also fish St. Croix and Megabass for moving baits but when fishing jigs and plastics, i prefer Loomis NRX and GLX. it would be wise to handle a NRX before purchasing as many do not like the ergonomics. i am not a huge fan of the ergonomics but can live with it because the blanks are amazing. NRX JWR 852 / 15 Aldebaran HG - jigs and plastics up to 1/4oz plus plastic. also good for single hook moving baits. Not a heavy cover or heavy hook rod. 2015 JDM Aldebaran is around $300. This combo will spoil you for life. Get the BFS version if you want to go very light and line capacity is not an issue. . NRX JWR 893 / Metanium MGL - jigs and plastics up to 3/8oz plus plastic. good for single hook moving baits as well. MGL can be bought for under $300 from Japan. be aware that the rod is 7'5". a bit tip heavy with a light reel. NRX CRR 873 / Metanium MGL - jigs and plastics up to 1/2oz plus plastic. stiff tip. great for football jigs and carolina rigs. a bit tip heavy with a light reel. not a typical Loomis 3 power - i'd call it a 4. You could use the change to super tune the reels and get some upgrades if the money is burning a hole in your pocket. Ive never fished a Steez but it might be worth a look. You should be able to get the NRX rods for about $400.
  20. looks like you have the bases covered already. take your time and get nice combos from here forward and sell combos that start collecting dust after purchasing new stuff. instead of buying the same exact rod or very similar rod for the same techniques, i might get one that is a bit different in power in length. for example, i have a 3 power 6'10" rod for jerkbaits, topwater, shallow and lipless cranks and a 4.5 power 7' for the same techiniques when using slightly heavier lures. a problem ive had when having a "decent" combo and a "nice" combo for the same technique is that instead of having two different lures of the same type tied on, id end up switching lures on the nice rod and ignoring the other one. id personally rather have 3 or 4 nice combos than 8-10 mediocre ones for recreational fishing. if i was a tournament angler i might think differently.
  21. is that a fast action rod? its shorter than most rods, sounds good for roll casts to targets with single hook baits and pitching jigs/plastics. might be great for skipping as well.
  22. i just use one of my heavy bass rods.
  23. the 2015 Aldebaran is the smallest (and lightest) ive fished. a great real but its $300 JDM. overkill for sure but maybe you could use it too? smaller than the Shimano 50s and the new 70 Curado. the 50s and 70s are actually a little easier to palm for me as the Aldebaran HG is almost too small. have not fished with a pixy so i cannot compare.
