i like an MLish rod with a soft XF tip for dropshotting. i currently use an avid 6'9" ML/XF this would not be ideal for shakey heads over 1/4oz plus plastic, however. for that i like a medium rod, with a stiffer tip, XF action. i use a st. croix LES 6'8" M/XF. im sure the avid version is nice. for one rod to handle both, id go with a Med power, extra-fast action. to answer your original question - "Will a 6'6" medium with fast tip do the job OK for dropshotting??" yes, it will do OK. but its not ideal.

the smallest (95?) magic swimmer in white lady is probably my favorite moving bait. give it a small jerk and then slack line and it will do a 180. not good for burning however. the larger ones might be better for that...

i am right handed and used right handed reels until a few yrs ago. switched all my reels to lefties and not looking back. its partly because i dont like switching hands but mainly because i have better feel and control over the bait by moving the rod with my right hand.

if you dont mind spending more take a look at these: native manta ray - i own and recommend it. super comfortable. a bit heavy wilderness systems tarpon - was my second choice. have heard great things about it. ocean kayak trident - have heard good things about it, can store rods in the hull id also go at least 12' if you go SOT. i recommend 14' for fresh water.

i have 3 tierra reels and all 3 dont feel as smooth as they used to. you can feel a little grind through about 30% of the handle turn. maybe they just need cleaning although they werent heavily used. maybe its bad luck but i havent had that issue with any of my 5 shimano spinning reels. anybody else have this issue with the tierras?

dont feel too bad - ive held a jig in my hand, attached a trailer and dropped it into the water without tieing it. apparently the look on my face was priceless.
