  1. hahahah... im not sure how many times im going to have to remind everyone that a "slower" gear ratio preffered for deep cranks and big spinnerbaits has little to nothing to do with the "speed" or "inches per turn". you want a lower ratio gear for these duties MAINLY for the torque it provides when reeling in something the puts up that much resistance. just like your car shifts down to go up a hill... you should go down a gear to compensate for an increased work load. itll make you much happier at the end of the day... beleive me. if it was about speed, then why buy a lower ratio? why not just get a 7.0 and reel slower... that way you have more options? of course that only applies to lures/ techniques that work you harder. obviously a faster ratio reel helps out in terms of IPT when fishing something like a topwater when you need to take up slack quickly or when a fish is running towards you. 6.3 will do most anything fairly well. but if you fish in a place where you will regularly be throwing a deep (15'+) crank or spinnerbait... you may want to look into a lower ratio reel for this technique.
  2. i know aaron martins kicks rear all over the place with this bait. saw him and zona slay them on an episode of WGFS. i think ive seen or heard of ike using them too. to me they seem like a more compact/ less flashy chatterbait. i think imma get some... they have them in bps now.
  3. that was a great article!
  4. i agree.. but then... if your mindset is that you dont want to catch just "keepers", then wont you find yourself putting the small ones back? i think you should go to the holes you found or know about... and fish like every cast is for a 10lber. if you find that a bunch of 2lbers are on the spot... then get your limit in the boat and move on. a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush....... you have to sometimes think that if dinks have moved up to the spot you were catching 4lbers on the day before... that the other anglers in the tourney may be experencing the same problem. and then a limit of 2lbers could very well win the tourney.
  5. i dont know about the flippin sticks specificly, but i do know that the SR rods are pretty nice. partner has one and he loves it... and got 2 more. i have mostly shimanos but as i can get the SR at cost... i think imma get one for worm/jig next month and see how it goes. good buy in my oppinion.
  6. ? :-? again.... the reason for using a lower ratio reel for deep cranking is for torque... not really for speed. you can speed up and slow down a retreive with any reel. you are going to hate life at the end of the day if you throw a 15'+ crank on a 7.1 reel.
  7. doing it yourslef might be ok. depends on how much time you have/ how much money you have. itll probably be cheaper and easier to find them if you have a few days maybe to fish the same lake...catching 2 to 4 lb-ers in florida isnt THAT hard...but if you only have one day and want that trip of a lifetime... maybe you should get a guide. or maybe hunt someone down here that will take you out....
  8. i can buy them locally for $99. thats not really a sale.
  9. its really not unlike how shimano and daiwa guys knock on quantum. are most quantums better than most shimanos? no. are they better than most daiwas? no. but theres nothing wrong with them and they work great for those that like them. quantum is like an independent party running against dems and reps.... they cant win for losing. doesnt matter how good they are.
  10. Did you try heating up the post/screw-loc with a lighter? x2
  11. i feel ya snooks, i too like to go inshore when im getting burned out on bass. its a totally different world with different challenges and different rewards!
  12. boatcaptain, i catch a fair amount of redfish and i agree with you, alot of the techniques for bass work great for reds. in fact, most of the redfish i have caught were when i was bass fishing. as far as your question goes, i have caught some good reds on carolina rigs with zoom trick worms, ol monsters, and craw style baits. i tend to find creeks or rivers with creeks emptying into them and fish the mouths on the outgoing tide. good stuff. the red in my avatar was actually the third one i caught off a laydown in the bend of a marsh creek. white/yellow belly bandit crankbait. waking a spinnerbait over grass points works well too.
  13. shaky head jigs are overpriced across the board. so much so that i think imma buy all the stuff to make them myself. its disgusting.,
  14. to my knowledge wd40 has no adverse effect on fish. in fact.. i have known people who swear by it as a fish attractant. seems silly i know.. but im just sayin.............
  15. chatterbaits are like anyother baits... you wont catch anything on them if they arent in the water! much like i cant seem to catch anything with a jig, and therefore dont throw it that much. its a vicious cycle. i prefer the strike king pure poisons in white with a chart. trailer. i fish them mostly liek a spinnerbait/ swimjig. i think this year im going to experiment more on ledges in the summer months with them, and in a couple of weeks i think i might spend a day throwing one instead of a trap over grass just to mix things up.
  16. *shrug* the largest line i use is 15lb hybrid. and i dont remember the last time i broke a fish off. 8lb. hybrid will be awesome for cranking ditches and contours in 5 to 15 ft. also be really good for stickbaits like xraps, rouges and pointers. big cranks though may stretch it too much, and any shallower and you may be too thick in the cover for that 5lber to stay on.
  17. well i cant even get ultrasoft in my town, and regular yozuri hybrid at sports authority (the only place that caries it) is about 15 bucks a spool, so i went ahead and got some 12 and 15lb ultrasoft.... thanx for the link!!!
  18. and im going to buy it!!
  19. use a lower gear reel.... if youre not already!! the mann's 30+ will BURY itself in a 20ft sandbar. i also like the strike king 6's (dont make it to 20ft) and i love my old hotlips... i only have one and i found that floating in a mat of grass.
  20. i probably throw a c-rig more than anything else. it excels in almost any situation. it is extremely versatile. main lake humps, points and creek channels are probably the best use for them. but you can use them anywahere. change the length of your leader in relation to the water clarity. generally, the clearer the water... the longer the leader. any plastic at all will work on a c-rig. recently (this summer) i had good success with zoom trick worms and 7in zoom gtails. lizards are a mainstay for the c-rig. beavers, craws and creatures work great too!
  21. i relate to this post. i too have just recently "stepped up my game" and decided to try tourney fishing. i got about 4 rigs, and then through knowing others, i ended up with around 27 rigs handed down to me. its amazing. however, i dont own a boat. so really, i only take 4-5 rods with me at any one time. and i find that its the same 5 or 6 TYPES of rigs...i just rotate similar ones. the moral is i think you will be fine.
  22. pffft. be happy you can afford a st.croix. if you like everything else about it... who cares what color it is? noone will be givin you hell about it... they will all be going... wow... look at that st.croix...........
  23. i dont fish alot of frogs so imma post up the question that is on topic. what about the scum frog pro? i mean... i had one and liked it... it cast well and never sank...but i never had a bronze eye or anything to compare it to. why are the bronzeeyes and bobbys frog twice the price as the scumfrog pro?
