Only average
You mean this left hand, lever drag mxj on a Star rod? Haven't used it in 6 months, real men use spinning gear. ;D

Only average
Only average snook but starting to turn on, caught 1 yesterday and 2 today, surprisingly on the incoming tide. Dirty ICW, not the clean ocean variety.

Favorie Braid for Spinning Reel
I only use braid and only spinning gear, imo it makes little difference brand to brand, have used quite a few. I mainly use PP, due to the convenience factor and that's what my local tackle shop stocks in bulk when I opt to have them respool for me. I cast about 99% of the time. 10 or 15# for freshwater, handles any fish or conditions I run into. 15 or 20# for saltwater, again handles fish well over 50 pounds, line does not break. Best not to overfill the spool, less windknots for sure. Don't think line twist is a thing of the past with braid, I get them when trolling spoons ( yes I use swivels on my spoons as well as to the leader). Braid does not troll out quite as well as mono does. For me there is no point in spending more money to get the same result.

Fishing trends...drive me crazy!!!
Sure. I'm NOT defending carp as great fighters, I'm just saying that if you want to tie on to something big, and fight a fish for a while, there is nothing bigger or harder fighting in MY lakes (4 to 201 acres). Am I still excited when I hook-up with a larger bass in my lakes - SURE - but am I disappointed if I hook-up to a 37lb fish - HECK NO - bring on the fight! I wasn't picking on you, I just got a kick out of a BULL bluegill..lol Whatever equipment one chooses to use is simply a means to an end, success is measured in the catch, not the quality of the gear. No question newer equipment works better and is smoother, but that has nothing to do with making a better fisherman out of a person. There are many species of rough or trash fish that will give great fights, I'd be happy catching a 20 or more pounder of any of them.

Fishing trends...drive me crazy!!!
IMO anyone living in close proximity to coastal and brackish waters have had some outstanding fish battles, we have all caught them. I for one consider myself fortunate to be one of those fisherman and even luckier that I fish those waters 325+ days a year. Debating what fish outfights another winds up being an opinion based on the region one fishes My pick for top fish story of this thread is the " bull bluegill "

US Reels - SX Supercaster Series
One of my beach mates, Poonman, uses a US reel, I forget which model, have seen the reel in action scores of times. No issues at all and his reel is strictly used for snook, tarpon and jacks, reel is not used in freshwater.

Dream Car
I've had muscle cars, both American & European luxury cars and European sports cars, my all time favorite car was my 1979 Coupe De Ville de Elegance. At my age I don't dream of cars anymore, just get me fro here to there and I'm happy. My 2009 Genesis sedan imo is built as well as any MB or BMW I've owned.

Fishing trends...drive me crazy!!!
You beat me to the punch on this one. I don't know any bass fisherman, other than myself none of my friends fish freshwater and we all live on lakes. The only bass fishing I see is the occasional tv show, dragging a fish across the water only to heave it into the boat is not my idea of fishing. What boggles my mind even more is the money spent for top of the line equipment just to drag those fish, Walmart combo will produce the identical result. I do understand why people use heavy tackle to horse fish out of weeds or pads, catching 2 pounds of fish with 5 pounds of weeds is something I try to avoid. I enjoy bass fishing but I want that rod to bend, I prefer open water fishing, light tackle, I'm there to fight the fish.

Braid without leader
I always use a leader but I don't think you need one under any circumstance. If I was worried about a fish seeing my line I would be just as concerned over bass seeing exposed hooks on a lure. The hook on a lure doesn't look natural and the fish seem to pay no attention.

The Mechanic
The only remake that comes to mind that exceeded the original was Cape Fear, I'm sure there may be others but I can't think of them.

Tarpon
Seasonal like any other type fishing, when it's hot it's great and when it's slow it's extremely challenging. Always catch something on bait but sometimes this time of year you can go a week without a strike on artificial. Yesterday the conditions were very favorable, outgoing tide, easterly wind, decent groundswell and not strike........I wasn't surprised.

The Mechanic
The Mechanic with Bronson and Jan Michael Vincent was a super flick., they don't make them like Bronson anymore. If notice he never dies in any of the movies like the Great Escape or Dirty Dozen?

Fishing trends...drive me crazy!!!
Not that it hasn't been done, but to catch a sailfish on 2# test takes 1 hell of a fisherman, I have never witnessed a feat like that. If you can imagine a fish hitting a bait at 60-70 mph ( bass swim about 12 mph), then peeling off huge amounts of line faster than you can blink your eye and most sails don't weight a 100#. To land a world class fish like that is an effort of teamwork between a top notch angler and a very experienced charter captain at the helm. I've caught sails, but with heavier tackle, still a great battle. I've seen it done on tv, but in person .......no!, The Spanish Fly ( Jose Wejebe ) catches sails on fly rod, on tv. They troll with conventional gear and when a sail is spotted they reel in and he throws out his fly as the fishing is swimming towards the boat, fantastic stuff, wonder how many takes are required to do it in a 30 minute show. The major problem with an exhausted fish are predators, sharks are almost always around, barracuda for some of the smaller species. Not uncommon to have a number of bull sharks swimming around the boat

flatfish lure
I grew up fishing that lure, it caught everything. If memory serves me correct it was just a cast and slow to moderate retrieve. I did see them offered for sale in Cabela's catalogue from a couple of years ago.

Cabelas reel, made by Daiwa ?
Like Chris I fish nothing but spinning. Most of the reels mentioned will do a fine job and recommendations pretty much boils down to a popularity contest. I think I have a handle on the kind of fish that Chris catches, not too different than what I catch. Cutting right to the chase I would favor a a floog supreme, not the xt, corrosion doesn't seem to be an issue. Supremes do not have the strongest drags but if the drags are set properly it doesn't matter if a reel has say 10# of drag compared to a same sized reel with 14#, as long as the drag is smooth, the drag is set to the specs of the line. I used a supreme 35 for snook, jacks, bluefish and others up to about 30#, no problem. The reel is light, has good line capacity, never failed, never needed service and priced right. For the most part I'm an Abu Soron stx guy, but the prices are a bit higher. When needed I will be considering a supreme xt 40 to replace my Daiwa tierra 3000.

No jail for LT; Hall of Fame linebacker gets probation in plea deal
Should have got 10 years just for his performance on Dancing With The Stars. Another DWTS failure, Tom Delay, is trying to worm his way out of a 3 year sentence.

What do you base your selection of new lures you never used before
I'll buy something different every once in a while for a change of pace. In reality most are no more productive than what I'm already using. A new lure is catches my attention, I'm not so sure a fish feels the same as I do.

A thought/theory...
"A Rose Is A Rose By Any Other Name", Romeo and Juliet, By William Shakespeare Things are what they are regardless of the name. Was Shakespeare a fishing tackle manufacturer? :-?

Best Bang for the buck Lures
I don't spend much money on freshwater baits, really don't see the need and I rarely lose something( I use a heavier leader for that purpose). Probably have caught 20 bass on a walmart $1.00 spinnerbait in the last couple of days. Been using the same 2 $3.00 blaze minnow jerkbaits for about 2 years, have a couple still unopened and have not seen the need to open them. I bought 3 generic bass topwater lures for about $6.00 off ebay, 2 are still unused, I use it for barracuda and bass on my way home in the canals when I want a larger bait. My spoons never wear out. Buy a bag of senkos and flukes every now and then, don't change my hooks very often and use cheap Eagle Claws. Fishing almost 350 days I'm sure the total number of fish is up there pretty good, that said I'm probably spending a minimal amount per fish, thats freshwater. When I moved to Florida I bought everything under the sun for saltwater inshore fishing only to discover that all is needed, spoon, jig, hard jerkbait, soft jerkbaits and a topwater. All in all I fish pretty economical. Rods and reels are a different story went needlessly overboard on that stuff.
