  1. Wilma was no picnic back in 2005, we lost power for about a week, no phone for 4 weeks and gas was hard to come by for quite a few days. We had a pretty fair amount of damage to our home, of course we were insured but any named storm puts the 2% deductible in force. On the bright side, the snapper were in and the bluefish were running.
  2. Whatever you buy, get one that is a saltwater reel or at least saltwater approved. Not only does the salt environment take it's toll but the strength of ocean fish puts a lot of stress on your equipment. Will this be used for inshore fishing with artificial or a bait set up. Offshore, pier or beach? What is your target species and how big is the average fish? How long do you want this reel to last? I would pay more attention to these factors than to name a specific brand. Any cheap reel will be fine for awhile.........
  3. Your rod will tell you everything you need to know just by the way it loads up. I pay very little attention to advertised lure weight as many are inaccurate, I've weighed them. I consistently throw baits a good 1/2 oz over rod limit with no adverse affect. Whatever is on the line counts as weight, bait, hook, bullet, it all adds.

Just this very moment I got a malware threat viewing the thread " when bass are out season" under General Bass Fishing Forum. This happened while using Google Chrome, then tried it on Firefox and it was clean.
  5. May I ask what you are fishing for with a Captiva 6000, getting up there in size, weight, line capacity and max drag. That's a saltwater reel, I once had a Captiva 5000.
  6. X2. The only thing that has affected my fishing is the weather. It's fricking Africa hot! Man, you aint kidding about that. It's been freakin brutal down here lately. I'm looking forward to some cooler weather in another month or two. That's why I don't do any freshwater fishing this time of year, beach is great especially early morning when I go.
  7. Exactly what I use......it's masking tape. Does not lose it's stickyness.
  8. The type of reel is incidental. What I would do is get a plastic grocery bag, put your designated weight into that bag, ie: 8# test=2-2.5 lbs of drag. Leave bag on the ground and raise your rod to about the 10 o'clock and set your drag as the line is barely pulling out. Quite simple and in no time you have the feel just to set it by memory, it does not have to be perfect. Don't get yourself confused about the max drag setting for your reels.
  9. I agree with Bilgerat. Some of the largest bass I have caught have been on small baits. Holds true for other species as well, in the brine DOA jerk shads or bass assassins rule, many do a great job on fly. Although some days nothing seems to work better than a windcheater. Some days it just takes time to figure it out. I can't seem to muster up the desire for a b/c.
  10. The proper drag setting is not 2/3 of your line strength. The proper setting is 25-30% of the weakest link, ie: 12lb main line and 8# leader would be 2-2.5 lbs of drag. Another method, a bit more complicated is basing the drag setting on the line strength of the rod,I'm not crazy for this method. Not saying you can't crank it down but if I do I wait till I have a fish on that requires it, then I'm leery about line breakage although it never happens to me with braid.
  11. Test the bend point, 1/2 slow, top 1/3 med, top 1/4 fast.
  12. Yep......... I don't even use any mono for backing, just tape it to spool. I think using 1/2 spool of mono backing will not add any significant weight.
  13. You tie the knot properly and it will not slip. I hardly ever use a palomar( it is an excellent knot) I use a standard clinch knot on 15 -20# braid and it holds perfectly. I catch a lot of saltwater fish 20# + with no problems.
  14. Good luck on the reds, great fish to catch, wish I had them in this part of Florida.
  15. I have done the allergy test and never had any adverse reaction from the test, these are not injections but tiny little ******. For a non medical person reading symptoms one could only take a wild guess, the lab report will tell much more. BP will fluctuate thruout the day and be on the high side if you are stressed when the BP test was done, my guess is your blood pressure is slightly lower than 116/84. Mine fluctuates between 110/71 and 130/80 in the course of the day.
  16. You're my hero.............Hope daughter is doing well and better luck in the future. I spend very little on tackle, I find you don't need a lot to catch a lot fish.

May not have a visable leak but could have one underground, happen to me 2 times here in Florida. Was your bill based on a reading or an estimate?
  18. Real, not a tampered photo 2 snook going after the same bait
  19. What determines the value of the fish?
  20. I use nothing but PP and cutting is simple. If you smoke nothing is better than a cigarette or a cigarette lighter. I don't carry scissors anymore, just something else to get in the way, I can cut braid with almost any pliers once you get the knack of it.
  21. For me the spool is fine, I like a lot line ( braid ) on my reels. I don't care for the round handle but would have to see it person, it's a nice looking reel. At present I use a supreme 35, not xt for light saltwater inshore and the reel has been an excellent performer. I know MG is not recommended for salt but I have no problem at all.
  22. I sure did. We went out the West palm inlet, dead day 1 nice runner and about 15# bonita. I always have a lighter spin outfit with me and on the way back inside the inlet I trolled a 3/4 oz spoon on a 10/20 rod 5000 medalist reel and I got hit. Gotta say if we didn't run it down I would not have landed it, had the drag cranked all the down and still was nearly spooled, you could have fried an egg on that reel.....20#PP strong stuff. I've caught bigger jacks but never had one fight harder, this epic goes into my top 10 of all time.
  23. I can speak to this first hand as it's happened to me numerous times in business ownership. Even in the best of times accounts move for one reason or another, that's business. Only 1 option remains, be positive and replace it, you're still young time is on your side. I'll give you some real advice, the chances of that account coming back are remote at best, when they are gone, they're gone, regardless of what you're appraisal of the situation is. The sooner you come to grips with that the better off you will be be. Even if the account did come back you have only broken even, you're not ahead and getting ahead is what business is all about. Feeling bad and having people console you, will never put sheckels in your pocket. A year from now you'll laff at this episode as you will have taken your business to a level never thought imaginable.
