  1. I fish the surf everyday but I know it's done differently depending on your area. I would ask what the predominate wind direction is and is the wind usually in your face? If yes you may need a rod for casting distance ( in Florida we fish the swash and distance is not too important). I only use spinning and personally I find it much easier from the surf, I have a number of outfits I use. The smallest is a 7' med 8/17, 2000 reel, the largest 7'6 mh 10/20 with a 4000 reel, all reels have 15 or 20# braid. I would have no qualms catching any of the fish you mentioned on my gear. I catch snook, tarpon, jack crevelles and they pretty much stack up to your fish. I'd only use a heavier rod if I were using heavier lures, I like to fish on the light side.
  2. Best reel has to be broken down into price ranges. Hypothetically it could be Shimano in 1 price range but in another it may be Pflueger or Abu.
  3. Tarpon have been pretty hot as of late and decent size too. Hooked 2 yesterday, landed the first and had a great battle with the second, unfortunately one of the o rings was pulled out from the lure so on about the 5 or 6 jump I lost it, but the battle is what counts, these fish get released anyway.
  4. That is awesome, just about my favorite way to fish. Sailfish on fly is getting popular,I've yet to do that.
  5. Those Cuban heels will play hell on your back, a quality traditional shoe will most likely serve your needs and be more comfortable.........Is Studio 54 back in business?
  6. I wouldn't be jumping to conclusions one way or the other so quick. Hard to believe an accurate appraisal can be made in only a couple of months. Well Rush Limbaugh is an expert, at least on hot air, so I would imagine he has the academic credentials to give us a full account of what the future has in store. If I'm not mistaken he is a college dropout with no scientific background, I don't find him to be a creditable source.
  7. I didn't realize that style was back in. Based on the price the quality won't be there, the boots I bought like that 40 years ago were $200+ then. Buy what you like, no need of support to justify a purchase for the sake of fashion, a review on quality is another matter of course.
  8. What i would do is go to a local tackle shop or even a BPS where hopefully there is knowledgeable staff that would be a better guide than me. I did that with my Avet at BPS and was turned on to my Star rod, for me it was a good marriage. Catch Bluefish and I'm sure you will agree it's anything but dead weight.
  9. Finding a good rod is easy, but which is right for your fishing style. Questions you need to answer first are : 1. a bait fisherman or casting artificial. 2. shore, pier or boat and if boat what kind of boat, drifting or trolling. 3. target species, reds, yellowtail, stripers and shark are caught entirely different. All that said.....teramer, strictly an inshore rod, good for reds and stripers, they are like snook ,good fighters but don't match offshore species in terms of power, mh 10/20 rod inshore is perfect for reds or stripers. Offshore you just never know what you may run into, even yellowtail put up a good fight and most likely fishing with weight so you need a heavier rod. Personally I don't think much of a tallus, I have 1 ( spinning) and put it down in favor of my Penn Pursuit, $40 and a way better and lighter rod. I have an Avet MXJ, comparable to your Caluctta, I use a Star Handicraft, terrific rod, as mentioned Seeker make very nice rods too.. I think 7' max, longer you lose leverage on fish, especially deep runners, also on a party boat longer rods will tangle other lines more easily. You will find rods used out in the ocean have longer foregrips and their is reason for it......leverage. Just about every rod mfg will have a good choice.
  10. He caught the ball with 2 hands and both feet on the ground and had control, then controlled the ball with one hand, play should have been over at that point with a touchdown. Had that play occurred in the field it would have been a fumble as he would have tried to advance the ball, but in the endzone advancement is not the issue but control. Personally I never liked reviews anyway, good or bad call stay with the official, they are right most of the time.
  11. Best anglers in the world lose fish, no one gets them all. The reason good anglers land more is that they don't get excited and control the fish instead of the fish controlling them.
  12. I agree with RobbieZ. I don't use more than 10 different items, less for saltwater, my inventory is in my head and I know what I need at all times.
  13. For $15 have a professional clean a spinning reel, a few days down time, recourse if that job isn't done properly ( you have none if you do it yourself) and helps the local economy. I have yet to be let down from a reputable local tackle repair.
  14. Bad call, both feet in the end zone and had control. I have been a hardcore Lions fans in the stands and on tv well over 50 years, longer on radio, the Lions always find away to lose, either by stupid plays, hardluck or devastating injuries. We beat the hell out of the Vikings in the 60's only to lose just about every game in the last few seconds. Who kicks a 63 yd field goals, Tom Dempsey from the worst NFL team that year ( New Orleans), any one remember Chuck Hughes? Needless to say the poorest and worst managed franchise in all of professional sports, to think we passed on Don Shula, I wonder if Russ Thomas was happy with that decision.
  15. I only fish flukes and went back to using a standard worm hook instead of a wide gap, seems to work better for me.
  16. I only use braid and I much prefer it, I fish only spinning gear. I'm not all that fussy on the brand but mostly use PP because of the availability, it has served me well. Very few wind knots, strong, ties a good knot, and the price is right, what else do I need?
  17. 9/11 was a strike against every citizen in the free world, a truly sad day.
  18. Some think tiring a fish out too much is the begining of the end for that fish, they don't recover well or another predator is about to have lunch. Myself I prefer catching fish on light tackle.
  19. Nothing illegal about going to Cuba, the people I know that have been there ( my mother for one ) have flown from Canada. Wouldn't surprise me to find a Canadian or Central American travel company that may be able to put together a fishing package.
  20. Many have seen many episodes of Star Trek or watched Close encounters of the third kind and may think other life forms exist look similar human beings. That may or may not be the case, they may look totally different. Are earthlings the most advanced civilization or are we light years behind others?
  21. Snook and Tarpon like to feed on the freshwater baitfish when a spillway lock opens after a rain, they get landlocked. I have never caught a " freshie". IMO the best baits to use are soft baits on a jig head, feathers, Storm wild eyed shads, hard baits like xraps and bombers work good too, but I lose a lot of them.
  22. Hit the ledge at waters level at the inlet right at tide change. It was dead until the current started to rage, once it did the bite was on fairly decent, caught 4 juvies, I love catching them up to about 25 or 30#. Bait of the day, white DOA jerk shad on 1/4 oz DOA jig head.
  23. I do sympathize with the men and women whose bodies prematurely age or develop diseases early in life, much of that is genetics and beyond one's control. Many in their 40's or 50's are not qualified to talk about old age, you're still young. At 65 I have some of the same problems mentioned, I try not to let anything get in the way of what I love to do, that's fishing for hard fighting fish, I do it every single day. I recently discovered I was a diabetic type 2. Medication and proper diet has restored my energy level and strength, I feel 40 again. Exercise doesn't hurt.
