  1. I don't what slightly used cardinal 82 means but I've been using mine hard for saltwater ( know in freshwater use) and performs like new $60, nice buy. A tip.........I replaced the 802 handle with a larger 804, fits perfect. The reel operates so much nicer now Cost $10.00
  2. Go see hawk ! Those prices are very high, I just put rain x latitudes for 40 less 15 rebate. I only have professionals work on my cars and trucks ( I owned 4 at one time big Macks and Gmc generals) recourse is the name of the game. Do the work yourself and get a bad part, now you have to uninstall , go back to the auto parts store and then reinstall. Pay a few bucks more and get the job done right. Tire Kingdom , $29 oil change with free tire rotation. Many places where I live in Florida it's against HOA to work on your car in the driveway, cept washing. In the garage is fine.
  3. Good job ! next time, take the car and get her oil changed for her
  4. Stay with rod, can't find an Im 8 any cheaper at least for now, I'm sure it will be fine. Is that a trion reel? I think it's a 39.95 reel so you got the rod for 10 bucks, decent enough of a deal. I think 30 # braid may be too heavy for general use, but's doable. I always use a leader, but it's a personal choice.
  5. Probably if you're catching "little fish" 15# and under but where I mostly fish you have to adjust the drag. I can just as easily catch a 2# blue runner or 60# tarpon, you just never know and it does happen more than you may think. With tarpon or a large snook they will snap your line in an eye blink so you have to back the drag down, then you run the risk have being spooled. Live bait fisherman may use a heavier line like 30# but most casters are using 10-15 or 20 braid. I'm constantly adjusting, do I lose any, you bet I do that's part of the game, but I'm releasing them anyway so makes no difference.
  6. I started at about age 5, back in 1950 there were no kids outfits so my dad bought me the same b/c as he was using, spinning the next year. He taught me 1 hand overhead cast right from the gitgo.
  7. For saltwater try using DOA 1/4 oz jig heads, hooks lay flat, also try using DOA cal jerkbaits with their jig heads.
  8. Boaters World is a great place to buy boat shoes.
  9. No question you get what you pay for in the Abu line up. I still have in service for that last few years that still work perfectly, cardinal 101 cardinal 172, light saltwater cardinal 177, heavier saltwater If the 102 or 104 is in your budget, they work just fine, for near the same price look at pflueger trion, even smoother.
  10. Boy could write volumes on this subject. The statement is true but a narrow view of the situation. If your job is not in jeopardy and you have little or no money invested and own no real estate, then there is no need to panic. However for many Americans this just isn't the case. I've been thru every recession as a business owner since 1974 (now retired ) and they aren't fun. As a rule my income suffered between 25-60%. I was fortunate enough to have only about 75 employees so I never laid anyone off and healthcare was intact , rare in this day and age. Corporate responsibility is to share holders (owners of the corp) not to labor. When product demand is down the only way to keep profits or lose less money is to reduce costs and that is labor, pensions, changes in healthcare etc. What makes this recession different than others is the lack of credit for business to be able to expand and gain market share thru attrition, the weak fall by the wayside in these types of conditions. I'm not an economist but a big problem is write down of toxic assets, the government needs a new formula to get these off the books as financials generally lead the way to recovery. On the bright side but not to get overly cocky, factory starts are up, new home building starts are up, retail sales are up and commodity prices are trending up ( steel and copper are well worth watching as that pertains to what the Chinese are doing and that's Americas ticket out of the recession). The stock market as rule is a precursor of things to come, things are looking up, however there will be more layoffs and my heart goes out to those people.
  11. I'm a native Detoiter and I grew up with George Kell, Al Kaline, Ernie Harwell, etc. Happy to say I made it to the 68' series. Btw, Bill Davidson, owner of the Pistons, just passed away too.
  12. As far as I'm concerned jigging is the way I want to work a bait like that.
  13. Many advocate backing your drag down during storage, I do just out of habit, so you need to reset every time you go out. My drag is set by feel and varies depending on my presentation. For example I set a heavier drag when I plan on using a harder hook set, conversely I ease up the the drag for spoons or hard jerkbaits and just use a wrist flick to set the hook. I will adjust my drag during a fight, but that doesn't make it right, I do lose some that way.
  14. Majority of my largest bass are caught between 1 and 3 in the afternoon, bright sun and 90 degree temps. I don't keep records but I would a guess 1/3 or them are caught on top lure from the shore.
  15. I freshwater fish exclusively from shore and I use spoons quite a bit. I do prefer using them with a siwash hook only because of the way I hook up the fish but you have more fish slipping the hook than with a treble. I see zero difference in the effectiveness of the spoon itself. Try and keep your rod tip up a bit as you approach the shoreline, this will help to eliminate hangups. As far as what spoon, imo nothing beats a mepps, stays under the water better than most, try the 8 gram.
  16. Tiger Woods, Gregg Norman, Jack Nicklaus aren't athletes, just to name a few? Nicklaus played college basketball before he turned to golf, Norman a surfer, and Tiger Woods would probably excel at most sports. I doubt that most pro fisherman could even walk 18 holes 4 days in a row on hilly courses. Before and after their rounds they are hitting tons of balls and most work out an hour or 2 a day. You bet they are athletes. As far as making a living being a pro fisherman, doubtful, unless you are able to reach the upper echelon. I don't think there is enough money out there until you reach the big leagues. You've got to score high and frequently to support both travel and your family at home. All this being said I see no difference between your desire and that of an inner city youth trying to "get out" by using professional boxing as a vehicle. Not wanting to discourage, just being realistic.
  17. For freshwater pond or canal I put a few things in an old rapala box or 2 and just stick them in my shorts pocket. That covers it for me. For saltwater I use a fanny pack, which is very popular down here. I use plastic lure containers and put 3-4 items in each. 1 for spoons, 1 for feathers, 1 jerkbaits and 1 for topwater. I can walk the beach for hours unencumbered and have everything I need. I haven't used a tackle bag in years for shore fishing.
  18. You can buy "academy" scissors at walgreen for about $2.50, they work fine. I use a cigarette or bic lighter, works even better. You don't really want a clean cut, when the line is singed it forms a little nib on the end and will prevent a pull thru. I use same technique for mono.
  19. The salesman only writes the initial deal, then it's up to the sales manager to approve it or not, many times he will come out and beat your brains out for more money. They work on what is called a par system. They have their own number in mind and will not sell for less, despite what the consumer thinks. I have a couple of friends(knew these guys back in high school) back in Michigan that own dealerships and they don't work cheap. I'm looking myself now for a new lease, I lease either 24 or36, 39 months are popular as they are about $30 mo less. So many of the internet deals are only come-ons. When it's too good to be true, then it's questionable. So called "hot cars" don't come with deals, only the less popular cars. In this environment your best shot is a dealer that could go under, he's looking for cash flow. Many will waive acquisition fees, security deposit, extra miles. I always purchase for my wife as she likes to keep them a while. Some of the manufacturer rates are excellent now, why would you pay cash if you can 0% or .9% financing? I'd buy only new, better financing ,longer terms and better warranty, exception would be a factory rep car or a car coming off lease usually lower mileage and pampered cars.
  20. By live bait I'm assuming your talking about using shiners, minnows or chubs. You can fish with or without a bobber, experiment. Some like to hook them thru the mouth up thru the top of the head, others tail or mid back. If you want to be really cool keep and your bait alive longer try a small rubber band or a wire twist around the girth of the bait then slip the hook underneath it on the topside of the bait, I'd think a minnow may be too small for that. That method is used for sailfish but I bet it would work great in freshwater. Nightcrawlers, get a nightcrawler harness and cast. Red or leaf worms, use soemthing like a colorado spinner and cast. Always have the option of a plain hook and bobber, sit under a tree, have a few beers and relaxe...........which ain't all bad either.
  21. Ben W Don't swap out the reels, keep the set up as is, even considering that it's not an expensive outfit it still is matched up by pflueger. If your reel on the mh lighting rod is not up to your standard and you expect limited use from it I would considered spending 29.95 and buy a pflueger trion, the 35 or 40 series. I had one for 2-3 years worked perfect and quite smooth. I gave it to my son in law and wouldn't give anything to anyone that wasn't perfect. No need to spend a ton for limited use.
  22. If conditions allow my preference would be using a 1/16 oz jig head.
  23. In this case get the Shimano. Penns are not Penns of yesteryear. Captivas are made in china and lack the quality of traditional Penns. I had, until it fell apart a captiva, 5000. I'm not up on my prices but for about 29 or 39 bucks a Pflueger trion is real touch to beat and a president at 59 would even be better. Never get tricked into thinking the more bearings the better the reel.
  24. I know those combos but I don't know what size reel you have, my only complaint is that it's a 2 piece rod. For the type of fishing you're doing it's just fine. I've caught 100#+ fish med heavy spin gear and the rods do not break, so I doubt that a 20lb fish will break your rod, the line will break before the rod. Just don't tighten that drag down, they want to run, let them. The reel is nice.......I use a medalist which is the saltwater version of the president and it's smoother than my shimano stradic fi. President is a bit on the heavy side but you'll get used to it, no big deal. Stay with it.
