  1. I think that their non worm gear baitcast reel is innovative but I have not one lick of experience with them
  2. I got a curado e5 for xmas and I think that it's almost too slow. I do some deep cranking and would like more of a usable ratio. just found out that the citica 6.3:1 gear set will work. plus I don't notice too much difference when fishing dd22's between my 5:1 and curado and 6:1 calcuttas
  3. I know that academy had some shimano cruxis' on sale for 39.99. good reel imo. aluminum frame, HEG gears. and smooth as silk too
  4. what kind of action and tip does that rod have? looking for a broader range of use. is it fast enough to provide good hook sets for plastics?
  5. rob it gets plenty cold down here. I'm sure not like mt. home though. that place is beautiful btw
  6. 2 kistler argons on the e7's and an allstar crankin series on the e5. but i'll have to admit that that e5 is almost too low geared for me. thinkin about seeing if the citica gears will go in it
  7. I picked up a black one(I don't recall the model)@ the local tackle store and rough is an understatment. and it's not very aesthetically pleasing on top of that. the reel just feels cheaply made. and the thing was like $269 if i remember correctly. I'm all for some american made stuff, but if i'm gonna drop 270 on it, it better perform. i think it's way overpriced and they are inflating it hoping it will catch the "american made" niche
  8. santa dropped off 3 curados for x-mas. 2 e7's and an e5. I'm impressed. while not quite as smooth as my calcuttas, probably because they are brand new, they feel very solid for such a small reel. this is the most effortless reel I've ever casted. light lures heavy lures it doesn't matter. and the torque on the e5... amazing on dd22's. you have to literally try to backlash it and even if you do, its not much at all. I would highly recomend this reel to anyone considering it.
  9. I see the sideplate release and when I pull or push it i cant make the sideplate come apart. does the release let the levelwind cover come off or the sideplate
  10. my father in law has an energy pt that hasn't been used in a couple of years. the retrieve is very rough and I thought i'd clean and relube. problem is how to you take the thing apart? also the cast control is very finicky on this reel. is this pretty common with these reels. seems like one click on the palm side is the difference between backlash or not.
  11. this stuff is great... but I wouldnt recomend anything lower than #40 on a bait cast because the diameter is so small that I had a problem with it cutting down into the spool even when spooled halfway with #20 mono. and when its stuck it's STUCK. had to get the knife after it. incredible castability though even on the heavier lines.
  12. I think it's a swingin reel right out of the box. but yeah that spool bearing does smooth it out a little and its an inexpensive upgrade. handles can be kind of high and certain ones are hard to come by from shimano lately. seems like the citica upgrade bug has bitten a many of fishermen. a couple of upgrades might put you in the realm of a curado.
  13. I agree. plus if he ends up getting hooked... no pun intended. then you've given him a priceless gift of a lifetime... an introduction to bass fishin
  14. I never leave the boat house without my watermelon red brush hogs, junebug finesseworms, watermelon red pearl zoom frogs, white buzzbait, any color senko, gold rattletrap, and last but definately not least... yellow magic
  15. academy recently had the shimano cruxis on sale for $39.99. I bought 4 of them for christmas gifts. d**n smooth reel too. also had the allstar classics for 24.99. can't get more economical than that
  16. I agree totally. people have been catching fish since the beginning of bass fishing on equipment that is so far behind even the least expensive rod's technology today. I logged over 500 fish last spring through this summer on some $49 allstar classics from academy. don't get me wrong, i love technology and the direction it's trending, its just that i think people tend to over analyze this area of our sport. maybe i have this outlook because i don't have an obscene amount of money to dedicate. but if i did, i'd have a rod box full of cumaras
  17. newb from Monroe, la. this site is addictive. so many knowledgeable people. question is, how do i get e-mail alerts when someone responds to a post. I've checked the box but to no avail. happy fishin guys. now i can delete all the other sites out of my bookmarks
  18. can someone tell me what the deal with yellow magic topwater lures is. recently used one against my dad and the ole pop-r and OMG!!! it outfished the pop-r 7:1. just kept hearing about them and had to try it out
  19. There is the rub...Your comparing the crank on a well broken in gear set to a new gear set. That is a bad assumption, I have seen 500.00 Shimano's that were also not smooth and had noisy gear sets.. No your not, try fishing the reel and breaking the new parts in.Good Luck & Tight lines!!!! reel mech i appreciate you atleast getting back to me. it's not a typical gear whine. my fault for not fully explaining. and as for the 200a it has the gears from a 200gtb recently to swiften the gear ratio. so they're less than a month old. it almost acts as if the pinion gear is rubbing on the plastic recess where the spool bearing sits. i was thinking that maybe the spool shaft was minutely bent . it seems to only make the noise when at a certain spot while cranking. also, when there is no tension on the spool, either lure tension, thumb tension or cast control tension, the reel operates as it should. I went to local tackle shop and picked up a brand new one and tightened the cast control all the way and didn't get the noise. i dunno. i'm not knocking shimano in any way. i have 6 calcuttas and will not fish with anything but shimano. best customer svc. i've ever expirienced.
  20. I recently recieved a repair stock 200gtb from shimano. as soon as I turned the handle a few times i noticed that something was not quite right. not nearly as smooth as new reel. there is a substantial amount of gear whine when moderately cranking. I've replaced with abec7 bearings, new drive and pinion gear and recently lubed. how much gearwhine is acceptable in these reels. I have a well used 200a that doesn't do this. any help on this would be greatly appreciated. it seems that a $230 reel would not exhibit any whine whatsoever. I'm all out of options
