  1. Funny, I had much better luck 10 years ago on Harwood's Mill than these days! I really don't fish it much these days. Partly because VGDIF has not done a weed kill-off in years as far as I know. That's made a lot of the fishing difficult (kayak/motor). That said, I have fished the small side more than the large side when I do. Did have some good catches there this year. Newport News Park is my usual fishing spot, when I can get out. I'd try Harwood's Mill again - hit up the small side, cypress trees, shorelines, and there's some good spots in the wide open area out from the small side dock.
  2. Negative, as to the first setup, but I do have some others shortly thereafter.
  3. Niiiiice net job!! No other equipment needed! Sweet.
  4. if it works, use it
  5. Welcome aboard! I'm sure you'll get some input soon from those in the region.
  6. I haven't been out in a few weeks, but NNPK and Harwood's Mill have been productive, but nothing like in years past. I took my boys and some little cousins to the docks at Harwood's Mill back in August and we just fished simple long pole rigs out-catching everyone nearby, LOL. Nightcrawlers killed it, including a nice 1.25# largie. That said, I found dropshotting worked along with Ned back in September. I did have a hoss on the line but lost it close to the yak, so the girls are there. I think 3# was the biggest I landed in Sep. Two of my boys have taken to saltwater fishing over fresh and have been absolutely slaying it with big trout, nice reds, croaker, spots, mudtoads, bluefish, shrimp, striper. They love the greater chance of catching variety, LOL. Curiously, it has been years since Fish & Game have used copper sulfate to tame the weeds. Unbelievable how much the weeds have taken over.
  7. Welcome aboard, Gavin! Some great advice from @WdyCrankbait. Can't really add more, but totally agree with him that it's more a finesse game in these parts. Keep at it, mate!

  10. Having done both, I prefer the kayak route; HOWEVER, that's single, not tandem. I have done canoe with 3 people fishing. I think money speaking, a canoe will be much cheaper allowing for multiple people and trolling motor. Either way, I'd make sure everyone wears a PFD for life . Good luck with your choice.
  11. Welcome aboard! Lots of kayakers use Harbor Freight's "cheap" trailer and DIY mod it. Here's one on YT:

  13. LOL. Big, small, use what you like. Goodness. I use 1000 for ALL my bass fishing (spinning) and have caught dozens of bass over 6 pounds. I prefer smaller reels, lighter setups. I've used 1000 for inshore fishing, too. Now there I'd probably prefer a 3000 for the sheer size difference of species. With braid, a 1000 can hold plenty of line. I've never worried about getting spooled in freshwater. All that said, today's reels are getting smaller and lighter with higher line capacities. One of my sons just bought an Abu Inshore 4000 and it's pretty sweet. The Tatulas are sweet reels. BTW, my Stradics have 7lbs of drag. The palm of my hand provides the rest in conjunction with rod power selection. All works as a unit. Good luck on your choice(s).
  14. It's a rig up that works! Used it myself a few times over the years.

  21. So what yer sayin' is what's in the box has nothing to do with the Bait Monkey. Good on ya, mate!
  22. Heh, interesting find(s)! My Dad had a few of those...
