Anyone been doing any good in VA?
OK, I thought might be what you meant, but had never heard it put that way before. Thank you! Dave

Rod help for Daiwa SV105 Reel
That should work fine. I have mine on a Loomis 843C, but it would be just as at home on an 842C.

Is there a particular set that you use? Amazon seems to have a number of them, and I don't see any of them that look to have the small screwdrivers.

Smaller casting reels?
If you look on the bay, and aren't real picky about appearance, you can find pixys for under $150. Helluva a deal on an awesome smaller reel. You can use if for finesse, but it can do so much more with it! It is definitely smaller in the hand than a Curado 70, and maybe a bit smaller than the 50's.

Shimano Expride or G.Loomis GLX?
Welcome to the forum! I just sent you a PM about a good sale on GLX rods. Dave

Best shimano/gloomis texas rig combo
I believe it is discontinued. I've seen them used on the bay and and on the Flea Market here and on other forums for about $250. Well worth it. I can't say for certain, but I believe the Shimano Aldebaran 50/51 could be considered it's successor.

Shimano Core 50Mg7 or 51Mg7. Or Core 100/101Mg.

Is It Worth It?
I think that there is a limit to the return on investment in rod quality. G Loomis GLX is definitely worth the upgrade over an IMX. But I've had an MBR843C GLX and now have an MBR843C NRX. If I could have fished the NRX before I bought it, I would have stuck with the GLX.

Best shimano/gloomis texas rig combo
For that budget, I would consider the Metanium MGL with the GLX. You can find the MGL at several Japanese tackle sites for just under $300 shipped, and you should easily be able to find a nice used GLX for $250. I have two that I spent $200 or less on. Dave

Money burning a whole in my pocket
I would consider a good used G Loomis MBR844C GLX.

St. Croix Legend Extreme 2009
That looks just like the Legend Xtremes I have.

Snaps - How many folks use them?
I use snaps with the split ring. I've never had a problem.

Do you collect old rods and reels
I don't really "collect". Its more like "accumulate". There is no real rhyme or reason to it. If it's old and looks cool, or brings back memories, and it's priced right, I grab it. I will eventually put up some sort of display in my man cave, but right now it's either all in bins or standing in a corner.

Winn rod grips
I tried the wrap tape on one of my rods with a thinner handle to try to increase the handle thickness. The feel was good, but even wrapping tight and taping the ends, the tape moved and wrinkled in relatively short time. The adhesive on the back, at least on the tape I had, was not very strong at all. I ended up taking it off, and doubling up the heat shrink wrap you have on the lower end of the spinning handle. I really like the way that feels.

Sensitive 2 piece casting rods
I have the Premier 6'6" MHF 2-pc spinning rod, and think the sensitivity on it is fine. The 2-pc rods made today are great quality and you don't lose any noticeable feel.

Reels for NRX 843 MBR
I have a Core 51Mg7 on my MBR843C NRX and love it. But a Chronarch 51E or JDM Scorpion 71 would serve you well on that rod and fit your budget. If you are willing to try used, you can likely find a used Chronarch Ci4. Another great option is to hit up the bay for a decent Daiwa Pixy or Alphas.

Rod for aldebaran
If you go with the MBR842C GLX, you will not regret it. Ive never heard anyone say anything bad about that rod. And unless you pay an arm and a leg for it, you could sell it and get your money back. I prefer mine over the same NRX.

Diehard Shimano user....heading to the darkside?
I'd agree with those above who said use both. I have mostly Shimano 50 size reels and LOVE them. But I also have a Daiwa Pixy and several in the Alphas family. Sweet reels that I really enjoy using. I considered getting a Tatula or Zillion, but the don't like the bigger frames.
-
Rod for aldebaran
If you are willing to try used, you can likely find a much nicer rod for your money. G Loomis MBR842C GLX would likely pair perfectly with that reel.

Bottom contact, sensitivity rod recommendations
St Croix Avid is a very solid choice for under (just) $200.

How long should a good set of bearings last?
If I put Boca ABEC7 bearings in a decent Shimano or Daiwa reel today, how long should they last? The life of the reel? 5 years? Thanks dave
