  1. I do this too, but replace the front treble hooks with more spinnerbaits.
  2. Gimme a: BOOYAH Pad Crasher-$6 Pack of Pit Bosses: $3 3/0 Superline EWG Hooks - $3 Some 3/8 tugsten Weights: $7 Bobberstops to peg my weight: $1
  3. I'll echo what everyone else has already said. Start by switching up retrieves, then colors of: skirt, blades, trailer. But if I was getting slammed and not hooking them, I would have put on a trailer hook, and I wouldn't have gotten to 5 strikes by the time I put one on. By the 3rd time that would have happened to me, I would have been digging in my box for a trailer hook. I, like a lot of others here prefer to start off without a trailer hook. But I realize that a trailer hook, like every other lure, rod, reel, or piece of terminal tackle that we use, is a tool used to catch fish. We choose our tools based on the conditions, and use the right tool for the job when the time is right. And when you were missing fish, a trailer hook was the right tool for the job.
  4. I use the exact same setup except I use it for flipping carolina rigged zara spooks into thick grass mats.
  5. I'd like to see these love fish. Never caught one before!
  6. I'd go Daiwa. My next reel is going to be either a Revros (49.99) or RG (59.99). You can find them cheaper than that on amazon and e bay too. These are the budget reels Daiwa offers that still have the Air Rotor that makes their reels so smooth. I work in a store that handles multiple brands of entry level spinning reels. After handling a lot of them I would put Daiwa ahead of Pflueger which is another brand thrown out a lot. I've noticed multiple quality issues with the new line of Presidents and Monarchs that just came out. I've put together reels that had handle tightening issues and felt rough.
  7. I work at a retail store part time and we get in assorted products from Eagle Claw from time to time that are regular products with a different sticker over the regular upc. Well, we got in a batch of SINKER-1 assortments. So I cleaned out the 8 packages of 79-cent tungsten worm weights. I got Skirt hub weights: 2 packs of 1/4 oz (2 per) 1 pack of 3/8 (2 per) 1 packs 1.2 oz (2 per) 2 pack 3/4 oz (1) and 2 packs of 1 oz regular flipping weights (2 per) I got like 8 ounces of tungsten for like 7 bucks, so that was a good day at work
  8. It's less weird than it you'd think it would be. The sheath attaches nice to your belt so its not too unbearable to fish with on. From the sounds of it, the places you're talking about are pretty secluded and ignored by most. I wouldn't worry too much about trimming the vegetation. It will all grow back and then some in a month or two. Funny, My fiancee's parents got me mine for Christmas. Guess where it stays? The trunk haha.
  9. I use one of these bad boys a few times of the year when the veggies get to wild. Works pretty well. I don't carry it every time I bank fish, but I'll bring it out to thin out a path if I know I'll be fishing there multiple times in the future.
  10. He was waiting to jump on your back the second you walked in. In fact, you were a goner the second you thought you needed flipping hooks. Only the bait monkey decides what you really need.
  11. My favorite is the Spro Popper. I've had now 4 Spro originals and 3 of them have sunk either out of the package or after first use, so not going back to them. I do really like the Booyah Pad Crashers - they walk well, collapse easily and straight up catch fish. I'm excited for their Toad Runner to come out.
  12. I dont usually bring a cooler, but if I were in the market for one, I'd look at the Ozark Trail Yeti Knock-offs from Walmart. I was checking them out one day and they seem very nice. Maybe something like this one https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-12-Can-Premium-Cooler/55626731 .They also have a backpack one but maybe thats a bit bigger than what you are looking for.
  13. That Pumpkinseed looks MEAN! Those baits will definitely get smashed by some big predators. Good Job!
  14. Good to hear, I am going to have a Gander "re-open" as a Gander Outdoors in my area later in the year. Hopefully they provide enough differentiate themselves from the pack and stay open.
  15. A work buddy of mine has the tickle stick and he really likes it. Because of the flat blank at the end of the rod, The paint at the end of the rod will chip off a little if that is an issue to you. We both each have a beaver d**n glass noodle. These rods are pretty good and have some nice features including a real sensitive tip (although not quite as sensitive as a ticklestick), but have some backbone and aren't full fiberglass wet noodles. They also have bigger eyelets than a ticklestick which help prevent ice formation and complete freezing up of your rod guides. They are about $20-25 and are great for fighting bluegills, crappies, and the like, might be a good option for you. https://www.acmetackle.com/products/beaver-dam-23-glass-noodle-rod
  16. https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FishPlants/ Looks like they still do it a lot
  17. Huge Thank you to @Burtonxj! There isn't an Item in this box that won't get used! The Megabass Jerkbaits and Duo Spybait will be the first things to hit the water this spring when the season opens! (In a lake that is free of northern pike- don't worry ) The Spinner bait is my favorite brand, but I haven't tried the Clearwater special version, so I am looking forward to it! Never tried the Vile Craws but have heard great things about them -will be a great punch and flip bait next summer! The colors of both the Robo worms and Tubes are incredible and will be put to heavy use on the smallmouth that swim in the rivers up here! And on top of all the great tackle, Burton sent a $25 gift card to TW! Blown away by your generosity Ian! Thank you so much!!
  18. Caught some mondo Bluegills on the ice yesterday. Going back out in a bit! Will update how I do! Update, today was slower, kept only 5 in total
  19. As far as the budget/starter baitcasting reels go, I've tried a few brands. I have owned 3 black max's(~30-35 on the bay), 2 Shimano Caius (older orange model, 55-60 depending on model), and 3 Daiwa Laguna reels (~45-60). Of all of those reels, I would buy the Laguna again first. The Caius would cast maybe just a hair better than the Laguna, but the Laguna feels much better. One of my Caius's side plate cracked for no apparent reason. The Laguna is also offered in a 7:1 ratio, the others are not. And I love the 90mm handle on the laguna. Of all, I would not buy another Black Max. It is a fine beginner reel, and I still have one on a rod, however the other companies just offer a better product at around the same price point. Both the Caius and Laguna are much better reels than the black max, which seems to break down quickly. If you don't want to spend much My #1 recommendation for reel is a Laguna. which can sometimes be found for around 40 bucks. Although, as others have said, If you can get a new fuego for 70 or a caenan for around 70, I'd go for it. I'd just stay away from the black max, and other cheap cheap reels.
  20. Whatever it is, you have a very pretty picture of that fish's scales haha
  21. Yeah I have probably bought over a dozen casting rods since then! Don't even remember making this post haha, but it was probably around the time that they had come out. If anyone needs to know how this ended, I had a couple of those Skeet reeses. Still have one, don't use it hardly , returned the other because of defect. I'd choose something else if anyone is looking.
  22. This is always fun! I'm in!
  23. I've had a rod go overboard, I had just caught a bass on a fluke and landed it, took the hook out, my dad took a picture of me, released the fish, and go to pick up my rod....wellll where is it? not anywhere on the boat, I must have set the reel end over the deck and it slid off into the water. Spent the next 30 minutes swimming down to about 8/9 feet looking for it in some weedy water. Luckily it wasn't too expensive, an Abu vengeance with a black max, later that day my brother accidentally snapped the tip off of a really nice daiwa rod I had.
  24. Many times,I have heard something along the lines of this: The first tap is the bass biting your lure The second tap is him spitting it out The third tap is your buddy tapping you on the shoulder asking you why you didn't set the hook!
