carp bait?
Carp fishermen use what they call "boilies". They are made from dough that is flavored (strawberry, etc), rolled into balls, and then boiled. (hence the name) The boiling gives them a hard coating. They thread the boilies on to what is called a "hair rig". There are carp sites you can go to that shows all the info needed.

The only feeling better than when I "got it", was when my kids did. The only problem is now they outfish me and ask why my hair is grey. ;D

Jigs...Tap Tap?
Awesome post Catt! The jig bite is hard to explain and the most frustrating thing for a new angler to learn. I grew up fishing jigs and still remember the times when I wanted to throw my rod in the lake. ;D

Jig resources
I've been fishing jigs all my life. If I could only take 2 baits with me on a fishing trip, a jig would be one of them. In my opinion, the hardest thing for a new jig fisherman to learn is what the bite feels like. It just takes practice. Guys like Roadwarrior could probably explain it better than I can.

The Basics
All reels pick up junk when fishing. It's good to carry a quality reel oil with you when fishing. Rince off crud with clean water and apply oil. If you can't do it yourself, have your reels professionally cleaned once a year.

sharpening hooks.
When your out on the lake, a small hone for a quick touch up is all you need. You should inspect hooks at home before you go out.
