I used to tie up about 4 or 5 Royal Wulffs the night before and would have a ball all day with my 5 wgt fly rod.

I bank fish a lot as well and have lost my share of jigs. You'll get tto the point where you'll know when you snagged and when a fish hits. When you know you snagged, the worst thing you can do is to try an rip the jig out. Try a light jigging motion at different angles and your jig will come out of the snag more often than not. If all else fails, put the spurs to her and let it rip...LOL Oh, and don't be like me and snag a snapping turtle. They don't like it very much... ;D

RLRobert is on point. I fish for saltwater striper on a 6'6 freshwater bass cranking rod with 12# line on a Quantum Baitcaster. Biggest on that set-up was a 32" striper. I didn't have a scale with me that day, but it was a fun one to catch.

I hand tie the skirts to the jig only for the fact that rubber bands tend to stretch and the next thing you know it, you pull the jig out of water and the skirt slid off the collar. Many members in this forum use wire and swear by that. So it's really a matter of preference and doesn't have any affects to the jig or skirt. Good luck. I'm sure once the water in your area gets hard, you'll have plenty of time to make a seasons worth of jigs. ;D

Right, I just wondered if it made ANY noise at all. I think a muffled rattle may be an advantage in some situations. I think Nate is right. What you have is something completely different from what is produced and what bass are conditioned to hearing. I believe in days gone by some manufactures used lead as ballast and rattle, but I don't think a "one knocker" style. In my opinion you're on to something. It's a winner in my book.

My son is 5 and I started him on a Zebco 33 at the beginning of the season. It was paired up with a 5'6" rod. He praticed in the yard for a day before we went to the pond the next day. He asked to use my baitcaster that day and never went back to 'ol 33. I just picked up a baitcaster for him for Christmas.

I like that lipless crank Fishwhittler. You have very nice scale and gill plate detail. I would like to find out how you do that someday. Please post the finished painted cranks. Very nice work!

I'm sorry, but am I the only one who caught this? A 5 year old using a baitcaster. That's amazing! To be honest with you, it surprised me as well. At the beginning of the season he asked if he could learn how to fish. We went to WalMart and got a Zebco 33 and I put it on my old 5'6" rod. He practiced in the backyard for a few hours and asked to go to the pond the next day. So naturally, we went the next day and he was casting away. He then asks if he can use my baitcast set-up. Reluctantly, I let him. I said, "make sure you stop the reel with your thumb". I made a few cast to show him how and gave him the rod. He winds up like he's swinging for the fences, just before his spinnerbait hits the water, I look down and his thumb was on the spool. He fished the rest of the day with my baitcaster and I ended up with 'ol 33....LOL...

Naturally of course. A boy must have his toys! And yes they are both killer baits especially for me in the salt water. You're soooo right Bassin_Fin@tic. ;D I'm jealous as well. I've been saltwater striper fishing for about 8 years now and can not get one to hit a walking lure to save my life. LOL

I think you're right Sam. I think I'll look into the Berkley rod others here have posted and then I'll split the grip for him and put on some type of decorative wrap. Thanks all for your ideas and opinions.

It's a great idea. I had an old lipless crank that I modified and inserted a small lead weight off the side of the bait. It would track straight until you killed it. The bait would flutter to it's side like a wounded fish. The bass would slam that thing. Then a pickeral came and nailed it and cut my line off. So much for that bait. I may have to purchase some of these, they look great.

Just an educated guess, but I think it's done by lead weight. For example, if you look at a certain manufacturers spinnerbait line - I'll use 3/8oz for discussion - the head is exacly the same on a spinnerbait with 1 blade or 2 blades. The 2 bladed bait will be heavier due to the added blade, clevis and maybe some spacer beads or tubing, etc.

no, he said he bought the reel. He's asking for info on rods. Correct. I bought the reel. The rod he was using is my old one. I know what you mean BASSclary about the handles. I'll end up re-shaping it so he can grip it better. Maybe I'll split grip it and add a decorative butt wrap, who knows. Maybe something like this one I did a couple of years ago: I still gotta figure out what to do on the rod situation.
