Christmas came early!
Got to fish with it yesterday, only caught one in the cold (it was 43 degrees I believe, and that's cold for a FL boy) anyway, the one I caught on a GY Kreature was a 2.5 to 3, he wasn't very long but he had a gut. ;D

Christmas came early!
Hey all, well you might have seen my earlier posts asking about different rods and I had my sights set on a St. Croix Avid after some research. My parents came to visit my wife and I for Thanksgiving and we also decided to celebrate Christmas because they are not going to get to on the actual day. Anyway, my mother said lets go to bass pro and you can choose a rod. Now, I was only looking at cheaper rods, when she tells me "I was planing on spending around $200 to $250" my eyes got wide and there it was, my new rod, a St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass rod. I am extremely happy with it and couldn't be more spoiled. haha ;D I just had to brag. happy fishing to all

Reel maintenance (freshwater, not sure about saltwater)
Thanks for the comments guys, I've been using it since I posted this topic and the lube seems to be holding steady, I really like it.

Favorite 10" worm?
Rage Anaconda, Culprit ribbon tail, and Reaction Innovations Big unit (it's only 9.5", but its still awesome). These are all really soft and yet maintain some impressive durability, plus the bass love them and that's why I like them the most. Just wish Yamamoto would come out with a ribbon tail worm instead of the curly tail (it seems different to me)! *hint hint, Gary* ;D

Reel maintenance (freshwater, not sure about saltwater)
it feels just as smooth, but it won't get stuff stuck in it. try it out and be the judge, it can't hurt anything.

Reel maintenance (freshwater, not sure about saltwater)
Well it has been said before and it was on here once or twice, but I never really saw anyone that tried it. What I have done is put the Dry-lubed worm gear (level wind gear) theory to test. All I have to say is IT really WORKS. Heres what works the best, take your baitcaster apart just enough to remove the worm gear or do it with your regular maintenance. Remove all old grease or oil, which ever you use, and wipe dry all the parts (worm gear, level wind guide rod, worm gear housing, the level wind itself, and the level wind prawl). After all of that you need your "dry lube," I picked up Remington Rem Dry-lube spray in the gun cleaning section at sports authority for $6. Spray a light coat on the guide rod, prawl, and all sides of the worm gear. It will dry into a powdery residue. Put the parts back together, work the reel a little bit to work in the coat of lube, and now you have a worm gear that is protected from the elements as well as grit and grime. Try it out and see for yourself.

Thoughts on Owner Hooks..New edit!
The J hooks are light wire, and the Wide Gap Plus are 3X wire. Same basic shape. Thank you, lol, this is what I was trying to find out. Right now I just have the plain old owner offset wide gap hooks that I tested out, like them so far, just wanted something more similar to the Gammy EWG that I'm used to. For my rigging purposes, I thing the shape of the EWG is a little easier to rig. Oh choices

Would this make a decent plastics rod?
Falcons are pretty good rods and $40 is a great deal, but you may also wanna try the St. Croix Triumph in that same range, just food for thought.

Thoughts on Owner Hooks..New edit!
People, this still doesn't answer my question in the EDIT, can we get with the program and stop arguing about Trokars and how Zero is 18 and fishing with them exclusively ;D. I will create another post for that if you would like, but for this post I want to know more about OWNER hooks! Savvy 8-)

Thoughts on Owner Hooks..New edit!
Anybody know about my new question? I agree on the Trokar comment, $9.99 a pack is a bit much for a hook that doesn't have a more durable point.

Have bought 2 - help me pick 1 more rod
I've heard good things about the Fenwicks, the quality is way above the price. You might also want to check out the Falcon Bucoo and Lamiglas Excel

Best rod for under $100
The Triumphs have the same blank as the Premiers, but the components are not necessarily the same. For example iirc, the Triumph has generic hard Alum-oxide inserts with with black frames, while the Premier has Batson Forecast guids with double-plated black chrome frames. Another good reason for the Premier is it has nearly 8 times more options to choose from, instead of the standards. Also the Premier is made here at home in Park Falls Wisconsin. 8-) x2 The Triumph is ok, but they are made in Mexico and China, whereas the premier is made here in the US with a little better quality pieces.

Thoughts on Owner Hooks..New edit!
I've been using nothing but Gamakatsu EWGs and G-locks, but was wondering about the Owner Rig'n hook, wide gap plus, and twistlock hooks. What are the forum's thoughts? Also, does the cutting point actually have a better hookup ratio than the regular needle point. -Alex EDIT: Are the Owner J hooks with the the cutting point about the same as the Gamakatsu EWG or is the Owner Wide gap plus closer? Also, I used an owner offset Wide gap on a texas rig yesterday, caught only one fish, but the thing pretty much set himself on the cutting point. I'm sold, these things are awesome.

How do Okuma Reels Stack up to other brands?
I love my little cayenne, It took care of a 9.1 large mouth very easily. It is very smooth and I've been using it since June with no problems. If you have any specific questions just PM me. -Alex

carbonlite vs smoke
I went to TT and a few other forums and it seems that the common statement between all of them is that Silstar/Pinnacle is the OEM for BPS, Pfleuger, and Browning. They all seem similar, with their brake systems and even appearances.

carbonlite vs smoke
Not This still does not deny the fact that the two reels in question are not made by the same manufacturer. By the way the information I am getting is coming from a Bass Pro Manager and friend. If you have insider information then please feel free to share. I already wrote what I know from him, he said, "The Carbonlite is made by Pfleuger"

carbonlite vs smoke
BPS contracts all of their reels to be made by Pfleuger, just because Pfleuger is owned by another company (Pure Fishing) doesn't mean that the reels are not made by them (Pfleuger). In turn Pure fishing is building the reel under the Pfleuger name who is in turn putting BPS's name on it.

fishing with worms
As a fellow Floridian, I can tell you that before I started using rage tails, I used to use nothing but Culprits, thanks to my father. The 10" worms in Purple and red shad colors were all I needed for big FL bass, just make sure you fish it slow and if that isn't working, go slower. You can also try some megastrike attractant, It works!

carbonlite vs smoke
The Carbonlite is made by Pfleuger, the Smoke is Quantum. The Carbonlite is a good reel, it's made out of aircraft grade aluminum. It is also cheaper than the Smoke. I have no experience with the smoke, but I hear good things, It has some quality components, should make a good reel. Anyway, they are not the same Manufacturer.
