  1. Moving baits; buzzbait, spinnerbait, bladed jig, trap, squarebill, spook, and jerkbait. Covering water is usually key.
  2. Storm makes a mudpuppy style muskie swimbait. I own one but can't honestly remember every throwing it.
  3. I have an 8.0 and also the new Magnum squarebill from Academy. Only once has an actual target fish hit my 8.0, and she tossed it at the boat. I throw mine on 20lb Big Game and a light swimbait rod. They get plenty deep still even on the heavy line.
  4. I caught a Barred Owl on a jitterbug at night, not fun.
  5. I think of them more as a squarebill replacement than a spinnerbait. I fish spinnerbaits fast for the most part. Usually high in the water column and typically through lots of grass or wood where a bladed jig has a rough time. Bladed jigs I fish slowly along the bottom and around weed edges, bumping the bottom and into cover, very similar to how I fish a squarebill.
  6. Catching frogs on frog lures is very easy. They're aggressive and dumb as a post. I've caught them on purpose, released them, then caught them again with the same bait right after being released. We used to target them with a grub on a aberdeen hook at ponds to get frog legs. It's a fun and easy way to catch them.
  7. I use 50lb braid for frogs. Never noticed an issue with it digging in very bad.
  8. I'll usually have at least 10 rods on the deck and I have no problem picking a rod up to make a single cast at a good looking spot for that particular bait. Once the fish are found I'll stick with what they're eating and fish an area harder though.
  9. SK has some Elastech baits, exactly the same as Zman. Yamamoto doesn't make a beaver, so it's an easy decision for me. The Senko is the only bait I might miss a little, but the ocho would probably make me forget about it.
  10. It's a rare occasion that I put a trailer hook on a buzzbait, but I'm sure glad I did. 5 pounds 14 ounces. They bite was HOT Thursday.
  11. Never heard of a banded dove.
  12. My great aunt had a man pull a gun on her when she lived in New Orleans. Unfortunately for him, he didn't realize that she was retired military and a feisty ol' gal who didn't deal well with people messing with her. She ended up taking his gun from him and holding him at gunpoint until the police got there and left after warning him that next times she wouldn't bother calling the police.
  13. A lot of time water that looks black like that has a strong, tannic stain to it. In water that color, I have really good luck with baits with gold in them. I like the bladed jig suggestion, usually I go with one of my homemade ones in golden shiner color. Spinnerbaits with gold blades can be really good, and dark colored jigs or plastics as well. It seems like junebug is usually a good plastics color in that kind of water.
  14. Welcome from a fellow KC area fisherman!
  15. Lake X is still hopping. Had to add a trailer hook to my buzzbait this trip. It was a weird deal, all but about 2 fish I caught were hooked outside the mouth in the cheek. I'm thinking they must have been going after the blade instead of the body of the bait. Resulted in lots and lots of missed fish. Even when I switched to a plopper 130, 3 bites, 3 misses. Caught 2 more on the Aventa, but I missed 4 other bites. Both of my first 2 keepers were follow up fish that ate a Senko after they missed my buzzbait. My last keeper was also my biggest of they year so far. She smoked my buzzbait and never should have made it to the boat. All she had to do was stay down, but she spent all her time near the surface and I was able to work her past the maze of stumps and laydowns. 5 pounds 14 ounces, I tried twice to get her to go 6, but rang up the exact same both times. One of the few times I was really glad I had a trailer hook on. Friday I had my mind made up to go back, but I got scared by the 2" of rain we'd gotten overnight, so I headed to Linn Valley instead. Right off the bat I stuck a 17" fish that went 2lb 11oz in some water willow, but I couldn't get that pattern going at all. I fished a Ned a lot and caught the appropriate sized fish to barely get a Ned in their mouths. Got onto some whites and schooling bass (largemouth and smallmouth), for awhile but they wouldn't connect on a topwater for some reason. Hooked a big bass under a dock on the Ned, pretty much at a standstill for several seconds before she slowly moved to the top. Water there is super clear, she was big, but it's impossible to tell from a distance and several feet under water. Hook just popped out, one of those ones you can't do anything about. I saw a drum fight? 2 of them spinning around and biting (gumming?) each other. Sight fished a 12.5 pound carp with my 5' ultralight and 4lb test, that was cool. Saw some GIANT gills and got a mongo redear on a hula stick, one of the longest I've ever caught, but it wasn't overly tall.
  16. I throw the 90 on 20lb braid. I can go all day with no need to retie.
  17. Haven't found a place where bass live that I can't catch them yet.
  18. I palm my reels when it comes to casting gear, but I've had plenty of times when I nearly lost my rod on the hookset/strike as well, including one last night. Wasn't even a big fish, just lost my grip for some reason.
  19. Wacky rig should be on that list for sure.
  20. They're the grub of choice for scrubbing a grub on a jighead.
  21. Black with a red blade 3/8oz Cavitron has been the hero the last few weeks.
  22. Welcome and thank you for your service!
