Splitting fuel and other costs with a regular partner
I never concerned myself with the aspect of splitting money when it comes to fishing trips. Now if you're a leech then you will be barred and I won't bother with you no more.

Did there used to be more fish in rivers???
It is true that was a jet motor you can run in shallow water than you can with the propped motor, but that still doesn't make a jet motor the best option for driving too close to the bank, there's more vegetation there and would get sucked up by the jet drive.

advice on buying a bass boat
I was in your shoes several years ago, looking at an aluminum jon/smaller motor/beater more or less typical 'first' boat. it really is a beginner stage, and I found out quickly that it's a short learning curve no matter what boat you buy. Luckily I found a full sized glass boat with a bigger engine on the back for a stupid low price, people cant even tell its older until I tell them it is, I bypassed the beginner stage and took it cautiously until I was comfortable, which seemed like no time at all. It came with a strong 101lb trolling motor on it so I was able to explorer more water before it hit shallows. Since you're mooring and you choices are similar to a Crestliner 1756 retriever, you might be able to find a decent used tracker 175 txw for relatively cheap. It'll have more room to expand and get more mileage out of it until you move on. If you have any questions about maint., docking, nav etc shoot me a pm.

Canadian geese problems
I probably see a million canadian geese here every year, you can't put a dent in there population, you shoot 5 and 20 more will show in its place the next day, they get in your face, no really you fish a bank and 40 squawk by looking at you like you're invading their space. They're called the canadian airforce here, they drop bombs, especially when you running right under them the sound of a high rpm prop releases their bowls so hard your boat changes color.

Why doesn't my boat charge my deep cycle batteries when I'm running it down the river?
Your onboard charger doesn't do any good if it's not hooked up getting power while going down the lake now does it. Most charging systems on the engine are more of a 'maintainer' than a charger and in any case only runs to the engines battery.
