  2. Nylon versus Fluorocarbon (Monofilament War) Fluorocarbon line is a monofilament polymer introduced in the early 90s. At the onset, fluoro was mainly used for saltwater leaders (count me in), but after the turn of the century it became increasingly popular as a main-line material. Today, fluorocarbon line rivals the popularity of nylon and braid. Not without just cause, fluorocarbon line possesses several desirable line attributes. Fluorocarbon line is the new kid on the block, but nylon line has yet to relinquish its throne. ‘Stretch’ refers to line deformation that extends the length, while ‘elasticity’ refers to spring-back in the opposite direction that shortens the length. According to several line studies, nylon line and fluorocarbon line exhibit very similar line stretch. In fact, the ‘brand’ of line played a bigger role in line stretch, than the difference between nylon & fluoro. The most outstanding difference between nylon and fluorocarbon line is ‘elasticity’. Nylon line is remarkably elastic, while fluorocarbon line exhibits mediocre spring-back. Fluoro line stretches easily at first but does not return to its original shape. With ongoing use, fluoro line becomes increasingly stretch-resistant, which is not as good as it sounds. Like saltwater taffy, reduced stretch is typically accompanied by line elongation, reduced spring-back and a thinner diameter. In turn, this results in decreased tensile strength, abrasion-resistance and knot strength. In contrast, nylon has remarkable spring-back, and is unsusceptible to elongation-related issues. In the final analysis, the monofilament war between nylon and fluorocarbon is far from cut-and-dried: LINE PROPERTY SHOOTOUT LINE PROPERTY VICTOR Abrasion Resistance Fluoro (Degrades over time) Water Repulsion Fluoro (Owing to greater density) Sink Rate Fluoro (Owing to greater density) Ultraviolet Resistance Fluoro Elasticity Nylon Knot Strength Nylon (by a long shot) Cost Nylon ===================================================== Volumetric Displacement None (Both monofilament lines have equally fat diameters) Stretch Resistance None (More dependent on line ‘brand’ than line ‘material’) Invisibility None (Hinges as much on backlighting as line material) Longevity None (Fluoro succumbs to elongation | Nylon succumbs to ultraviolet) ================================================== BOTTOM-LINE: The choice between Nylon & Fluoro depends on where he or she place their priorities. 3. If you have to run your outboard motor on the trailer, attach a Flushette over the shaft intake. Use a moderate flow on your garden hose, and keep the RPMs low. Without a water pump impeller, you won't be going very far without overheating. Roger

Every night, my wife & I watch comedy on YouTube TV. Among those we watch the most: Rodney Dangerfield Jay Leno Ron White Jerry Seinfeld Jeff Dunham (Bubba J. & Achmed) Roger
  5. I can sympathize with the impatience and discontent, but why the disproportionate interest of the unknown? OH Yeah, how foolish of me...That's exactly what we anglers do best.
  6. Small world. My wife's uncle was a coal miner who did not get out. He died young of black-lung disease. Roger

Worms that float, when tossed into the bathroom basin are abundant. Worms that float with a hook installed, are like hen's teeth. I used Tru-Turn hooks during their infancy (cam-action), but was not impressed with their hook-up ratio. In any case, size 3/0 should be fine with 6" Zoom worms. Do you have a particular presentation in mind? Roger
  8. Hoedown (bluegrass) sure is country.
  9. Gear ratios in the 6:1 area, are probably the best representatives of 'general-purpose'. As we move away from center, the purpose grows increasingly smaller, but never disappears. I have reels in the 5:1 category, that are perfect for winching spoons & swimbaits thru floating weeds, stuff like spatterdock & alligator weed. In this situation, a 7:1 reel would try to break your cranking wrist. Roger
  10. My first question would be: Did it used to display better, or is this a new issue? If it's not a new issue, I'd double-check the software under transducer selection. Roger

The Rage Bug & Rage Craw (full-size) are my long-time favorite punch trailers (the bug for neutral fish). Moving to the 'baby' craw, offers a little better weed penetration and seems to produce more strikes. Yeah, I'm hooked on punching too Roger
  12. By itself, a Senko weighs 3/8 oz (far from weightless). If you're looking for a brisker sink rate or better weed penetration, why not add a sinker. Whether it's fished weighted or unweighted, it's still a Senko (or as Roland would say: "Sinko") Roger
  13. Going back, when shallow & deep spools were packed in the reel box, I had the opportunity to compare. On the deep spools I used any out-of-service saltwater line for backing, which remained indefinitely. I've never been smoked-out on a shallow spool, so frankly, it's really not important to me. Roger

In Florida, mat-punching is a way-of-life in summer. My go-to punch trailer has become the Baby Rage Craw. Roger

  17. Happy Birthday, you've got a whole lot of fishing yet to do. Oh, to be 50 again. Roger

  19. I agree with your assessment, small inline spinners, and small lures in general, are a great way to oust the skunk. BTW: From what I see, no BR member will be unfriended by the Bait Monkey Roger
  20. With respect to Johnson spoons, it really doesn't matter whether you choose a gold, silver or black spoon, whether you add a single-tail grub, double-tail grub or fish it undressed, you won't be able to destroy the fish-catchability of a J-spoon. In one word, the magic of the Johnson spoon is “weedlessness”, it's the lure that goes, where other lures fear to tread. Roger
  21. I just took delivery on two Dobyns rods about a week ago, and know exactly what you're talking about. Their approach to tip-packaging is overkill. Making it worse, both rods were 'medium-light' blanks. I wound up using a pair of small, sharp scissors to slice down the middle of the foam and tape. I went slow, taking care not to contact the rod-tip, eventually pulling it off the rod-tip (horror show) Roger
