You need sound and vibration. You need a color they can see. Try 1/4 to 1/2 ounce chrome with black back lipless crankbait on 8 pound fluorocarbon line. A purple and gold lipless crankbait should work good, too. Remember, in murky and dirty water you need sound, vibration and bright colors. Of course, you can go to the other extreme and throw a black crankbait. The bass can see as much as six-times better in the water than you can so they will feel the vibration; hear the rattles; and then focus on the color.

Water temperature? (If you don't have a pool thermometer with a string attached please get one) The bass react to water temperatures. If the water temperature is in the 40's, the bass will just hover in place. They will not move unless they are extremely hungry or get aggravated at your bait. The bass will be deep and then travel to any warm spots they can find to sit and enjoy the sun during the day. As the guys stated above, fish plastics s-l-o-w. And then s-l-o-w-e-r if possible. It's called "dead sticking." Go with a finesse worm of your choice and color. Use a spinning rig with no more than 8-pound fluorocarbon line. 6-pound line would be even better. Use a 1/8 bullet sinker or a 1/8 jig head and rig the worm Texas style. Bundle up. Put on your headphones and listen to your favorite music. Keep finger on line at all times. Cast and let it sit for about five minutes or until you can't stand it anymore. Move worm very slowly every five minutes or so. Be patient. You will either catch some fish or a cold. Probably a cold. But you just got to keep trying. Let us know if you catch anything. And remember chicken soup. Great for colds.

Black Bill, of course the rain will have an impact on the bass. First, rain arrives via a cold front the bass will get lockjaw the next day or two. Second, cold rain lowers the water temperature and the bass will get lockjaw until the water temperatures get warmer. Third, the cold water from the rain enters the backs of creeks and the bass will get lockjaw shutting down good fishing areas. Fourth, the bass moving up to spawn will head back and wait for warmer water and have lockjaw. Fifth, the cold weather arriving after April 5th will slow down the dogwoods from blooming. Sixth, the runoff will make the water murky or muddy and it will take a few days before the silt settles to the bottom. The bass will get lockjaw during this process. Otherwise, no problems. I just remembered!!! Pocahontas State Park. You can rent a small boat and fish Swift Creek Lake or walk to Beaver Lake by the amphitheater. You enter the park off Beach Road. Check it out on Google.

Ok Bill, let's keep the discussion going. Salisbury Country Club has a series of three or four ponds we used to fish and pull out 3 ,4 and 5 pounders. Even wdycrankbait would clobber them at Salisbury. We used to fish the ponds on Monday when the course was closed. Never had any problems. The golfers playing the course were not supposed to be there and if we were not supposed to be there so we had a Mexican stalemate. We let them play and they let us fish. Now, there is a new golf pro who has stocked the ponds with trout and has put them off limits to fishing for those of us who are not members. I have not fished the ponds in a few years and always enjoyed fishing them and meeting others who joined us. Caught a lot of beautiful bass in those ponds. So if you want to take a chance this is what you do: 1. Go to the club on a Monday when the course is closed. 2. Turn off Salisbury Drive onto Kings Lynn Road. 3. Make the 90* turn on Kings Lynn Road and park. 4. Walk via the easement to the golf course. 5. The best pond will be to your right. It has a small golf cart bridge at one end. 6. Fish until they chase you off. 7. Hit the other ponds as you wish. By the Presbyterian church on Salisbury Drive you will find a nice pond that belongs to the Salisbury Country Club. Park in the lot by the tennis courts or in the church's parking lot and walk to the pond. Some nice bass are in that pond. Lake Salisbury is on the other side of Salisbury Drive from the golf club but you have to be a member of the association to fish it. If you do fish it there is a walkway next to a house to your left on Oakengate Road. Check it out on a map. Park and go down the steps to the dam area. You will see the long dam were you can walk and fish. Be ready to be run off if someone decides to report you. As for the pond at the Stonehenge Country Club off Midlo across from Wal-Mart, I never fished it but understand that if you ask the golf pro he may let you. Then again, I have never seen or heard of anyone fishing that pond. One last place to try your luck. Off Providence Road heading south away from Midlothian Turnpike you will see Providence Methodist Church on your left. There is a pond on the other side of their parking lot. Just park and walk to the pond and give some topwaters a shot. And don't forget to go to Dick's and get the 2018 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet. Black Bill, it is early Friday morning so I don't have time to do a lot of research for you in the Midlo area but I'll give it a shot. Off the top of my head may I suggest hitting the pond off Southlake Blvd. which is off Midlo on the eastern side of Courthouse/Huguenot Road intersection. Go through the intersection and look for Southlake Blvd. Turn right and park in the realtor's lot. You can walk to the pond and then around it as you please. Hit it for bass, crappie and bream. Heading east on Midlo Turnpike you will see the Morefield Office Park on your right. Three small ponds in that complex with "no fishing" signs. Never been run off. Small bass in those ponds. I can't remember which one is the best so give them all a shot. I have been run off the Arboretum Office Park pond. Nice bass in it. No idea if they still have security but if you want to chance getting run off give it a shot. Maybe the security guy will be taking a nap!!! There is a pond in the Boulders office park. Look it up and fish it. I have not fished that pond in years. It is off Boulder Parkway and you turn into the Boulder Lake Drive parking lot. There is a new pond off Lucks Lane in the area of St. Francis Hospital. You can give it shot. No idea if it holds a good population of fish. It is on your left as you travel towards the hospital on Lucks Lane. In the Walton Park area there is a nice pond. I believe it is off Coalfield Road. Google Midlo area and you will see it. You can hit the Powhatan Lakes, too. Check them out on Google. Amelia Wildlife Area is a great small lake but hard to walk around. Limited bank fishing. There are a lot of ponds in subdivisions but you will need written permission to fish them. Get a copy of the 2018 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet from VG&IF (free) at Dicks, Bass Pro Shops or Green Top and look for the places to fish in the greater Chesterfield County area. Be sure to have your Virginia fishing license with you in case the Chesterfield police ask you for it. Good luck and let us know what ponds you fished and how you did.

Very likely. Bass are very aggressive feeders and they will hit anything in the water if they think they can either eat it or knock/drive it away.

So it looks like size does matter!!! My lipless is a 1/4 ounce chrome with a black back. Of course, I throw others but usually the 1/4 ounce chrome with black back produces strikes. As for red colors, check out the Strike King One-Eyed Shad lipless crankbaits for their "red" colors and you will find the ones I throw. Now, what are good alternatives to finesse worms? Answer: Nothing. Nothing is less expensive than a 20-pack of Zoom finesse worms in the colors of your choice other than other brands that may be less expensive.

MegaStrike if I want it to be a clean application. A secret concoction from Dr. Jones at Berkley if I want it to be messy. Doesn't matter. Use scent!!!!

Cold front and winter storm will push them back into the deeper water. When the water temps start to warm the spawn will begin. Watch those dogwood trees.
